You don't have to wait for the government to do something, and you don't have to stick to trees. A tree can be a big responsibility, and the wrong kind of tree can be a big liability. People where I live are occasionally killed by trees.

There are shrubs which protect the bird's nests, there are native flowers that feed the butterflies, and so forth. YOu can improve your world in small, doable ways.

But Ivy Day would still be a good idea. It makes more sense to befriend a large, existing tree than to plant a sapling and pray. Geoff's banjo is ready, and that's half the battle.

I must admit to being puzzled that you have no tree planting holiday, but have all that "Green Man" stuff going on.

Fourth of July would suit me - Mind you, I do try to keep my banjos relatively free of ivy as a rule...

I followed the link provided by GUEST - On the page there was a link to a clip with John Kirkpatrick singing as song about the Aston on Clun Arbor Tree.

I still think that the International idea of a national holiday dedicated to planting trees and improving our environment, helping to combat global warming and create a sustainable supply of wood for future use is such a good idea. Of course, our governments (not just the current one) seem purely dedicated to lining the pockets of rich people who would rather cut down trees to make golf courses or speculate on land prices.

Ivy Day! The whole town or neighborhood could get out its banjos, melodeons, bodhrans, or shakey eggs and party into the night.

For heaven's sake, don't do the usual British thing and schedule the holiday for some god-awful, chilly, damp time of year. How about July 4th?

You do have Arbor Day in England, at least sort of. Once widely celebrated, it seems now only to be occur in Aston on Clun, Shropshire, and it had nothing to do with planting trees. In fact, the reason for the original holiday seems rather unclear. Here is more:

I've been to the British Isles, Geoff, and I have an idea for a good holiday for you. Establish a day when y'all go out and pull the ivy off the trees. It's bad for them.

Everybody in town could deal with ivy during the day, then in the evening, you could get out the instruments and eat bangers.


Think of the fun to be had making wreaths or bonfires from the ivy. Or you could make up fake traditions which say ivy is as good as mistletoe for kissing under.

The practical part, which is daubing the cut ends with straight brush-killer, should be done quietly by people who know what they're doing.

From what I saw on my visit there, Ireland especially could use this holiday.

They Might Be Giants web site today leads with the headline It's Arbor Day, treehuggers! followed by a video entitled C is for Conifers.

I'd never heard of Arbor Day - Wikipedia says THIS about it.

It seems to be (different dates in different countries) an official holiday dedicated to planting trees.

Why Can't we have interesting and useful holidays in England?
