I missed a good part of the festival too, Haruo, by volunteering to work in the participants' hospitality area for 4 hours Sunday afternoon (after which - walking around on that concrete floor the entire time and carrying 6-packs or cases of beverages - I was so stiff and sore that I had to sit down there for another 45 min. before venturing back out to the festival).   Sad to say, there was not a lot of music going on in the hospitality area during my shift either, except for the ubiquitous old time fiddlers.   And when I got around to checking out the Center House court, I heard 20 min. of Scandihoovian music (which was good), only to find there would be a whole hour of dead space in that area before the Balkan music started.   I encountered several instances of those "breaks" between acts, plus a lot of stages shut down early. So, on the whole, Sunday was a bit of disappointment, except for running into a good number of old (and current) friends at the Balkan dance area later Sunday evening. I was way too stiff and sore to dare dance on the horrible Center House "dance floor" (two-by-fours placed together on end over concrete - a floor that was designed and used for driving tanks onto during WWII). But the Balkan music and friend meeting was great.

Peter, I'm sorry I missed you guys on Sunday too, but it's partly my fault for volunteering for that particular shift in the hospitality room.   Plus, it's the nature of the Folklife experience to find yourself wanting to be 3 places (or more) at once and to find whatever tentative "schedule" you've made for yourself being pretty much disregarded in favor of the unanticipated events.   I'm sorry Viv wasn't able to get you and the Black Sheep onto the stage for one of the scheduled events, but she tells me you're hoping to be back next year - ON the program and with some gigs in the NW before and/or after the festival too.   I sure hope that can happen.    It was a delight to meet you and join in on your singing Friday evening in the hospitality area.

Monday was a good jamming day for me. First at Bluegrass Hill, later at the "Jamming Tent," and later on in the hospitality area.   Plus I got to catch some very good music acts, such as Klapa Doowoppala (fusion of Serbian folk music and American doo wop), The Unpaid Bills (with Jim Portillo filling in for one of the Bills, Bill Murlin, who was recovering from laryngitis), and a number of buskers.

Note to self: next year, volunteer to do some work for the Festival BEFORE the festival even starts, so as to be free to wander wherever I want, whenever, during the festival.

Stallion, glad to hear you enjoyed the experience. I was unfortunately (though I enjoyed much of it) volunteering the entire time I was there (all afternoon Saturday and almost 12 hours Sunday) so got to absolutely no music events except the Maritime Showcase (where I was manning the CD vending table). But I did make a portion of the Sunday night singaround at McHugh's, which was great. And I can attest, ollaimh or whoever complained of it, that there were quite a few buskers, and the only ones I heard any action against (and being a gate volunteer I got to hear the staff radio channel) were those playing with amplification, or those playing in such a way as to block ingress and egress or too close to a registered-performer stage, and these latter cases were simply asked to move, not arrested that I could see.

So sorry we didn't catch up with Genie again, thank you so much for looking after us. We had a rather lazy day and the evening was a tad frenetic and after a few beers one forgets one has a telephone! For us the festival is done, we are packing to leave. There are so many people to thank for making our trip to Seattle such a wonderful experience it would require me to remember a lot of names and as many of you will know it is not my forte! Genie you deserve a special mention for encouraging us to sing (and quietening the old timey band) in the participants hospitality area, it won us a lot of friends, thanks. This festival is not widely known outside of the Northwest but it surely must be one of the best festivals ever. It works on so many levels, not least it's inclusivity, I have pictures of tots, perhaps not five years old, busking with fiddle at a standard which would put some adults to shame avery eclectic mix which must surely must float everyones boat somewhere in the Park. The singalongs where superperb regretfully were too numerous for us to get around them all. The participants of the "fringe" singalongs were very kind to us and made us feel so welcome. I don't really want to turn this thread into a slanging match but I have to say that the fringe here was far more
welcoming of strangers, by a country mile, to that of any British festival I have ever attended
It is a FREE festival though you wouldn't know it by the level of performance. Anyway had the knock to leave, thank you Seattle we will be back.

Yes, I really didn't hear properly, they kept saying it is "on the other side, which I think meant the larger room at McHugh's. Sorry to miss last nights shindig but we met up early doors with the morris teams for a sing and then the shanty singers came in with Tom Lewis and John and Rikka et al. There were a lot of songs we hadn't heard before. Having said all that we are having to look after our voices a tad it is really a singing marathon on the up side there is no shortage of volunteers to lead the singing! We are going to use the hotel gym this morning trying to burn off the calories from all that beer! Genie, We will come to find you when we get to the park.

We can always get a song session going in the Festival Hospitality room (including the outdoors area inside the cyclone fence, weather permitting). But is there an off-site venue too?

Plan B, I have offered to do a beer promo for Eurobrews, the last one we did was not one to shout home about on Cape Cod, the manager did ask if we could do every Sunday, 6000 mile commute every weekend! Anyway I have dropped them a line, they actually wanted us to do a tour, 175 outlets 2 performances in each, we declined! We'll see

there should be a busker sing around to protest the northwest folk staff arresting and harrassing buskers. who by the way used to be regular performers as well,many including me for almost a decade, some longer.

Do you mean North America, South? Central? Greenland part of American continent? Islands? Territories? Hearts yearning to breathe free? It is in North America which could be Canada, USA or Mexico but this is in USA but does attract visitors from the Frozen North AKA Canada; they are free to call themselves Americans in my book, but prefer I think mostly to call themselves Canadians whilst preferring that we not call ourselves Americans because you see, there are many Americas, but we all beat with one heart and sing with one voice do we not? mg
