Subject: Sounds of Folk 10th Birthday Concert
From: Alio
Date: 29 Apr 12 - 01:07 PM

Hi everyone,

Sounds of Folk celebrates it's 10th Birthday in May - we kept the title and theme tune all these years, even though we've been with 3 different stations, currently Oldham Community Radio, which covers the whole of Greater Manchester.
So on Sunday, May 20th we're holding a birthday party - complete with birthday cake - at Greenfield Conservative Club in Greenfield, Saddleworth, starting at 7.30. Bernard will be providing the Sound, and I'll be MCing.
All of the artists - who include Pete Abbott, Mark Dowding, Duncan McFarlane and Anne Brivonese, Keith Kendrick & Sylvia Needham, Sid, Nine Tenths Below, 2/3 of the original Th'Antiques Roadshow, Zoe Mulford, Geoff Miller, Pete Coe, John Howarth, Hometowners - and loads more!
The concert is non fund-raising, but we're charging £5 on the door so that we can buy artists a drink. From the door charge and th sale of raffle tickets we hope to raise money for 2 charities (Oldham Community Radio, plus one which will be chosen by a member of the audience).

I'd really love to see many of you there - motorhomes are welcome in the large car park behind the club, so you're OK to stay overnight - and I want to finish the evening with a huge singaround / celebration.

If you want more info, please call me on 07923 007769, and I'll make sure you get in OK. Actually, my daughter and grandson will be on the door, so you shouldn't have a problem.

PLease come along ad support us - so many folk programmes are going by the wayside, so it's lovely to know one which is flourishing!
Ali xx

Not long now!

Updated list (in no particular order!):

Pete Coe, Nine Tenths Below, Keith Kendrick & Sylvia Needham, Mark Dowding, Pete Abbott, John Howarth, Nick Dow, The Hometowners, Zoe Mulford, Duncan McFarlane & Anne Brivonese, Gren Bartley, Sid, Jim Schofield, Nick Caffrey & Ed McGurk, Bernard Cromarty, Dylan Owen (The Bard of Oswaldtwistle), Geoff Miller, George Critchley, Gary & Vera Aspey ...hosted by our own Ali O'Brien (Presenter, Sounds of Folk)!

It's also possible Desi Friel may be there with his new CD!

In all, we have 19 (yes, nineteen!) guests, each of whom will play for ten minutes.

It promises to be a great concert - and a great opportunity to meet people you may not have seen for years!

There's plenty of room, so don't worry about turning up without a ticket - if necessary, we'll hang you from the ceiling!!

Later I'll post a list of everyone we have interviewed over the years - it reads like a 'Who's Who' of folk! Some came into the studio, some were via telephone, and some we interviewed 'on location' - the Sounds of Folk Broadside Outcasts have been to some interesting places - Lancaster Maritime Festival, Burnley Mechanics Institute, Bury Met and Ellesmere Port Boat Museum, for example!

The guests on the very first programme were Th'Antique Road Show, with a brief appearance from Clive Gregson, who called in to pre-record for the second programme! Clive was our guest this week (14th May), and you can 'Listen Again' to that programme for approximately three months - use 'select by programme' to find it.

Radio Britfolk wasn't live, but web-based podcasts.

Our only guests were Uiscedwr and Jennifer Cutting, via telephone, after this it wasn't practical to invite guests as Ali was unwell and we ended up recording most of the programmes at her house!

We had a great night - well attended, and the final count of 'turns' was twenty - Stanley Accrington managed to tear himself away from his cricket match to explain the Euro crisis as only he can!

Well done to all concerned!

Yes, a truely great night. Great to see so many top class performers in one concert.
Well done Ali and Bernard for putting it together, and for keeping it together.
Bernard: now the challenge is for you to book them all together for a concert at Lymm!
