Two cops, employees of the Fullerton, CA Police dept., are being tried for their roles in the brutal beating, tasering, suffocation and death of one Kelly Thomas. Mr. Thomas, described in police and news reports as "homeless" (that always helps to diminish the individual's worth) is reported to have cried, "Help me dad," as he died on the night of July 5, 2011. I'm posting this in the music threads because I wonder if there is anyone out there these days writing songs about this kind of thing, as Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and others used to do. Springsteen gave us "American Skin (41 Shots)." I can't think of many others in recent years, even though the times and events seem to cry out for it. Anyone?

I wonder, Big D, if the songs aren't happening partly because the cable news-oid shows (a la Nancy Grace) beat us to death with this sort of thing 24/7. The songs would have a lot more impact, I believe, but people are too surfeited with the tabloid approach to be receptive. Just my theory. -Glenn

Songs get written, Big D. check the link above. Problem is that too many people just don't care. The times when we cared for our brothers and sisters are gone. It's a coldness in us that has been created by TV, radio and various print media. We are becoming nations of cowards protected by bullies who wear uniforms and have official sanction, fast becoming nations of servants to people with enough money to buy or influence law for their own benefit. Of course, once again, no one gives a damn. But a few people on that link do. imo

I miss the days when Woody Guthrie's guitar sported a sticker that stated, "This Machine Kills Fascists". Or when Bob Dylan wrote songs about real-life tragedies like this one ("The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol", for instance). The recent killing of Trayvon Martin is another example. But as long as the powers that be, keep us divided to the point where we say, "It was just a homeless guy," or "It couldn't happen to my son," or "He/she was probably an illegal," change won't happen. We have to see others as our brothers and sisters and give a damn.
