Subject: CD Soon -- An Gorta Mor / Potato Famine From: GUEST,mg Date: 09 May 12 - 07:36 PM I should wait a day or so until I hear from someone in Ireland who is going to record today...but hopefully our CD about the Great Hunger/An Gorta (with accents) Mor/ Potato Famine will be out shortly. Mick's Famine Road will be on it (Brian Flynn author -- we need to reach him), Alice does Green Fields of Amerikay, Seamus does Sleive Galleon Braes, Tony does Caroline Chisholm, The Emigrant's Friend and I will do one called Dingle to Tralee (plus around 13 other people). I am hoping against hope that one more person from Mudcat will be able to join us for what I call the Folklife Edition..if not, we will catch her on the next run...out of about 17 songs, all but three are specifically famine-related, and the three are related still but perhaps not as directly..more immigration. Some of the singers are professional; some are not. Some of the arrangements are phenomenal and some are as simple as possible. We have a priest from Liverpool, teenagers from Newfoundland, people who are currently living in Ireland or who have emigrated. Lots from USA. We are all somehow of Irish descent, and it is not so much a musical endeavor as an attempt to honor our ancestors..I suspect many are like me who barely knew a bit about them..but the songs are beautiful, and I at least find them not to be depressing, but stoic perhaps. So anyway, I am going to figure out costs etc. soon..I will try to make this first run about $10 plus tax of 7.8% plus mailing costs..so probably around $13 total. Later runs will be more expensive, but I want to distribute this as widely as possible. I also want to pay back expenses, correct any possible errors, and do a larger run soon. The sound quality in general will be very high, but is variable because we are getting stuff from all over... I would love help with a web site..I have not determined a host yet..mg |

Subject: RE: CD Soon -- An Gorta Mor / Potato Famine From: beachcomber Date: 10 May 12 - 10:51 AM The very best of luck with this it sounds as though it will be very interesting. If I may raise one small point. Please, don't refer in your pre-publicity to "The Potato Famine". People starved because the potato crop spoiled but there was plenty of other foodstuff in the country, which was not made available to the hungry. Something to do with Market forces I believe ? Sort of "bondholders" I suppose. Good luck again with your music. |

Subject: RE: CD Soon -- An Gorta Mor / Potato Famine From: GUEST,mg Date: 10 May 12 - 11:38 AM Since my ancestors called it The Potato Famine, so will I. I am not about to rename their disaster and I would not rename any else's either. It is called by various names by various groups. mg |
