Support your own team, the far east have decimated domestic manufacturers, but there is still a loyal domestic demand.

Otherwise real musos wouldnt be patronising real craftsmen

My first real electric guitar was a 'hand crafted' in England [Romford - Essex]

"Shergold Masqerader" approx £150 + £40 for heavy plywood case

In 1976 it was sold as the best quality for money option for teenagers who craved a Fender or Gibson
but stood no realistic chance of ever earning enough cash to buy one.

Certainly advertised as a better instrument than the cheaper Japanese copies we all sneered at around that point in time..

However the guitar's idiosyncratic design & component flaws and mediocre tone soon became apparent.

But I was stuck with it, whilst doting parents were still lumbered with the high interest rate HP repayments.

5 years later everything changed....

The Japanese invaded and conquered.

Around 1981 Squier and Tokai started exporting Fender copies
that were almost affordable and far superior to the US originals
which were suffering serious quality control problems.

Yamaha SG series were very expensive pro guitars, and superior in nearly every respect to traditional Gibson electric guitars.

Japanese Westone, Aria, Washburn, etc started making their own original design electric guitars
which were more easily affordable and superb quality mass market instruments.

Shergold failed to compete and went out of business

UK electric guitar manufacturers were small in number to begin with,
but the few survivors simply could not make guitars as good as the Japanese at an affordable price point.
Gordon Smith may have been the only remaining serious contender ???

That was 30 years ago - My not particularly great UK Shergold
is now an increasingly valued vintage collectors item,
ebay auction prices continue to rise as more affluent US and Japanese collectors now seek them out...

Yes if I ever had the money, I'd love to own a genuine US Telecaster & Les Paul

But If I had that kind of money my first choice would be a Yamaha SG-2000 or Washburn A-20

The best instruments in my collection are the 25 to 30 year old Japanese guitars
I happily picked up for next to nothing in 2nd hand shops.

Some of the more recent Chinese guitars are nearly as good.

Anyone refusing to buy Pacific Rim guitars for reasons of economic patriotism
or irrational xenophobia..

"Fakes" are instruments which, whilst not made by the specific manufacturer ie, Martin, Gibson etc are branded as such.

I wouldn't buy a "fake" in a fit, but some of the Chinese and Philipine manufactured guitars are as good if not better than a lot of major brands.

Why would you buy American, Canadian or British instruments, but not Chinese or Japanese?
I have a Swedish guitar. Would you own that? I once owned a Brazilian guitar (not Brazilian rosewood, but built in Brazil). Would you own that? I own a banduria made in the Philipines and an archtop made in Korea. The fellow up the road owns an Irish guitar and my nephew owns a Mexican Tele. How about these instruments?

Very laudable sentiments John , but for a lot of young guitarists , cost rather outeighs patriotism . Not that I regret buying my hand built englsh mandolin , but I coud have bought half a dozen playable Pacific Rim instruments for the same outlay

I refuse to contemplate any chinese made guitar.

As I matured ! so i put my trust, faith and cash into buying British hand crafted guitars.

that is after fulfilling an ambition and buying a martin, which I haven't used, yet.

Support your own is what I say.

There's a big enough market in china so I've heard

get to know and patronize your native craftsmen is what I believe.

I had bought 2 early yamahas before I was fully grown but the british made instruments were and are superior in all ways.

The bad rap comes from bluegrass pickers who favor D 28 or the D 45.

About 12 years ago Tanglewood were making affordable Gibson 335 copies in their Chinese factory
which in many peoples opinion
were superior instruments to more costly 'official' Epiphone copies;
and in my personal experience a more comfortably playable guitar
than the stiff feeling unresponsive brand new mega expensive real 335 I tried out for comparison in a music shop..

I think the 'Bad Rap' for D35's is that they tend to be a tad heavy on the bass as opposed to the'More Blanced' D 28 . Had a discussion on this very point with a D28 lover - He tried my D35 and said it was one of the nearest he had found to his 28 . But as I said earlier , itsd all down to personal taste !

Where did this "Bad rap" for D-35s come from? This is the first time I've heard it. I've played a few D-35s and they seem to compare quite favourably with D-28s.

The nicest guitar I've ever played is my 1962 D-21. I wouldn't trade it for a D-28 or a D-35. There weren't many of these made, under 3000, but all four of the D-21 owners I've spoken to loved theirs. I s'pose Roger might have gotten his hands on a bad one.

A new shop in Peterborough has a large selection of Tanglewoods and, for the money, they seem like a great deal. I've sent a few of my students who were in the market over to have a look at them.

ALL Tanglewood guitars are nowadays made in Korea or China The so called "factories" that Pete mentions are in fact just distribution warehouses. What tends to mislead people is they have "Tanglewood Great Britain" marked on them, note, not MADE in Great Britain. They are fine guitars though. It's a shame that Most greedy western companies have shifted their manufacturing eastward to maximize the personal profit of a few and put the masses out of work ...

For what it's worth, I borrowed a guitar from Leadfingers on my recent trip to England. He gave me a choice, a Martin D 35 or his Tanglewood. I preferred the Tanglewood.
Martin D 35 has had a bad rap for years but I have played two that were outstanding.

Thanks for the loan, LF, it did the job nicely.

Tanglewood have factories over here in England they are not made anywhere else ikn the world ,far as I know I have both 12 and 6 string

Well to add to the mix. I have a fine Tanglewood 12 string for sale. It has a cutout, and bulit in elrctronics. It's a fine guitar, but now I have my Appollo 12, I never play it.
It's in very good nick, and looks a lot like this.
I shall have it with me at Whitby if it's still available.
£300 including Gator hard case.

Roger - I was only saying that FOR THE PRICE my Tanglewood is a damn fine guitar ! Last time I priced a D 35 it was about £3000 . The Tangleweood was about £600 , and I dony argue about what is or isnt a good Guitar - Its all down to personal preference in the end !

I'm only trying here to sell a guitar surplus to my requirements, and is taking up room in my den - 0K?.
I've at least four friends with D-35s which all sound great.
This ain't a 35, this entry is for a cheap, decent guitar.
For the record, I've three Martins and two Takamines, I've never sold a non-playable, indecent guitar in my 70 year life.
Don't let's get in a discussion on Martins. I love 'em, and I've only played one that I didn't like - a D-21.
