Woody Guthrie (note spelling) is regularly covered, and not just within the folk-revival world. Mostly recently, I see, a full album's worth by the Dropkick Murphys, who have set unrecorded Guthrie lyrics to their own melodies. A particular favorite of mine in the same vein is a release by Del McCoury's bluegrass outfit a few years ago.

I agree, of course, that Ramblin' Jack Elliott remains the greatest interpreter of them all.

Jack at his worst is better than 90% of the performers out there today.

Jack Elliott was the big influence that started me playing the guitar and singing at the age of about fourteen. It's great to hear he's still performing. I saw him in 1966 at Acton Town Hall in London. The line up was Ramblin' jack Elliott, Rev Gary Davis and Julie Felix....

So glad to hear that he still puts on some good shows. I am a big fan and love his records and really enjoyed the movie he made with his daughter, but the only time I ever saw him live, about twenty some years ago at a small club near Kensington Market in Toronto, he put on an embarrassing show. He was drinking tequila and kept calling the waitress to bring him another and forgetting the words to the songs. His stories were not just rambling, but disjointed.
From the sounds of these posts, it sounds like I just caught him on a bad night. I'm glad it's not a regular thing.

Gosh yes, Hawk, gosh yes.

Biggest laugh getter was when he described a night at the Gaslight in the early 60s. "Peter and Paul of Peter, Paul and Mary were there. Mary was out somewhere shopping!"

I was so very fortunate to have thirty minutes of one on one time with Jack before one of his concerts last year. Just the two of us leaning against his truck in the parking lot chatting away, he even listened while I told a story, about the how and where of the first time I saw him in the early 70's. I've heard people refer to him as a bit "crusty" but I've never found him to be less than charming. Then of course I've never tried to take his picture...

It was Odetta's mother who first called him "Ramblin'."

He was apparently nicknamed "Ramblin'" not because he traveled a lot, but because he told so many long stories in between songs. The stories are definitely one of the neat things about seeing Jack do a performance.

"Jack must be well into his 80s..."

Jack is 9 months into his 80s. He'll be 81 on August 1.

He's always been one of my heroes since about 1960 when I bought his LP 'Jack Takes The Floor'.
Great to know he's still doing what he does best.

Yup, Jack is one of a kind and still puts on a great show. It's not just flash photography. He insists on no photography at all during his performance, and will stop to show to to call out anyone that he sees taking pictures. However, after the show he is usually happy to hang around to talk to fans, sign autographs, pose for pictures, and tell stories. Go see him if you get a chance.

I've seen him twice within the last five years and enjoyed hearing him.

He always requests that people not take flash photos while he performs. He says it distracts him. Fair enough.

What I haven't liked is the people who ignore his request.

Went to a concert last night with Ramblin' Jack Elliott. Jack must be well into his 80s, but still puts on a great show. Nice to hear somebody still doing Woodie Gutherie and telling stories about long ago.
If you ever get the chance to see Jack live, do it. You will not regret it.

Mark
