The monthly sea shanty, forebitter, and ballad session will take place this Saturday, May 19, at The Press Room on Daniel Street in Portsmouth, NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.

Tom and I are really looking forward to it because, due to Tom's broken ankle, my run-raggedness, combined with the session usurped by St. Pat's, this will be our first appearance at the shanty sing since February.

As most of you already know, Tom dislocated his ankle and broke his fibula on March 14th and only came home from rehab a week and a half ago. Tom finally made it to the Friday session last week for the first time in eight weeks. I'm hoping a couple strongish guys will show up a bit early (before 3:30) to help me lift Tom and his wheelchair up that granite step and into The Press Room.

I also really hope to see a couple people we haven't seen for awhile -- there are so many of them.

Linn

I have a concertina I'll bring, unless Tom wants me to drop by with it before then.

Jeri, please give Tom a call -- he hasn't played in several months and he's definitely twitchy with concertina withdrawal.

Judy and I are planning to be there for sure.

Be great to see you both!

I should have advance copies of our new CD Songs from an Old Sea Chest

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Looking forward to it, Charley!

Tom has his concertina and is trying to figure out how to play it despite the arms on his wheelchair.

Nine weeks away from the concertina shows...plus the arms on the wheelchair impediment.

See you this afternoon!

Steve Smith and Justine will be there -- as well as Justine's daughter, Natalie Finn, and a friend.

Steve just called to make sure he'd be there when we arrived to help Tom and his wheelchair up the entrance step to The Press Room.

Nice session!

It's been way too long -- and we got a late start because the PMAC kids had their, uh, concert upstairs until about 4:30. But a good strong session! Tom (well, and me, too, since I'm driving) had to leave a little after 6:00.

I'll post the head count and the play list tomorrow morning before I go to work.

Oh, let's see...Tom and I, Peter Souza, Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble), Dianne Lavoie, Audi also from Gloucester, Jeri, Marty (Bupkes) Stock, Martha from Gloucester, Steve Smith and Justine and Justine's daughter Natalie Finn and a friend of hers, Don Hale, Carol Coronis showed up for a little while... Erin and Lindsay Weaver and a friend, all the way from Vermont. Chris Vaughan was in attendance, but didn't sing. If I forgot anyone, I'll make up for it tomorrow morning.

Later,
Linn

Linn-

We managed to keep singing after you and Tom left. Jeff Warner joined us for the last half hour. Jeannie led a couple of fine songs and JudyB did her best rendition yet of "A Parting."

I owe you another CD. I believe you left yours on the table and it went home with someone else.

Let's see, after you left I led "The Outside Track" and "A Night at Dago Tom's."

Jeff wound up the evening leading "Nelson's Prayer."

I may have mixed up her name but she joined the three women who were sitting together at the back table by the window. She's got a powerful voice and a fine traditional style delivery.

Jean is a friend of Erin & Lindsey.
Too bad I missed her! (And everybody/everything that happened after I left). I had some throat irritation, but primarily, I was tired.

Sorry I missed it!

I'm running a little late this morning -- had to rescue Tom. I was getting ready for work when I heard an odd thump. Went partway down the stairs and asked Tom if he was okay...and the reply was, "No." Continued downstairs to investigate and he'd slipped from the armchair and was on his knees on the floor. I got a gate belt around him for safety (and guidance), he hauled himself up on the armchair (yes, we need a shanty!), and I got the wheelchair under his rear end.

Okay, here's the revised list of attendees...

Tom and I, of course, Peter Souza, Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble), Judy Barrows (JudyB), Dianne Lavoie, Audi from Gloucester, Jeri, Marty (Bupkes) Stock, Martha from Gloucester, Steve Smith and Justine Donovan and Justine's daughter Natalie Finn with a friend of hers, Don Hale, Carol Coronis (for a bit, but she didn't sing), Erin and Lindsay and Jeannie from Vermont, and Chris Vaughan who also didn't sing.

Pete Souza sort of got things going despite the amplified, uh, "accompaniment" from the show upstairs (which was over around 4:30-4:45) by singing a bunch o' stuff including:

1. Astoria's Bar - Pete Souza
2. Haul Away, Joe - Peter and Audi
3. Midnight Special - Pete
4. something else...
5. Drunken Sailor - Pete
and when the audience started filing down the stairs...
6. Fire Marengo _ Charlie
7. So Long, It's Been Good to Know You - Marty
8. Stormalong - Justine
9. Whup, Jamboree - Audi
10. Greenland Whale Fisheries - Don Hale
oops, not sure when I sang this; didn't get on my list:
00. Home, Dearie, Home - Linn
11. Stormalong, Stormy, Stormalong - Charlie
12. Tommy's Gone to Hilo - Pete
13. Jolly Roving Tar - Martha
14. The Jeannie C - Dianne
15. Lady Franklin's Lament - Don Hale
16. Bear Away, Yankee - Jeri
17. The Rosabella - Marty
18. Maid On the Shore - Audi
19. Nine Times a Night - Linn
20. Row On, Row On - Pete
21. Back and the Sides - Martha
22. [Yakker, Yakker, Yakker] (I can never remember the real title to this!) - Charlie
23. Shallow Brown - Pete
24. Grey Funnel Line - Justine
25. The Ways of Man Are Passing Strange - Marty
26. Isle au Haut - Dianne

And then Tom needed to head homeward, so I don't know what was sung afterwards or who joined the crew.

With a bit of luck, Tom will be out of the wheelchair after this Friday -- depends on what Dr. Blitzer thinks of the new x-rays. Then Tom won't be inhibited by the lack of a handicapped accessible rest room at The Press Room (or, maybe, the necessity to be home in daylight).

Oh, it didn't seem to show in my singing, but I had a bit of a voice irritation going on, too -- lower throat dryness that seemed just on the verge of interfering with my singing.

#21 should be "Laying on the Screw" based on a poem by Edwin J. Brady.

Steve Carrigan also dropped in at the end but didn't lead a song.

To fill in a blank or two,as our trusty scribe was called away to other duty,I recall that Marty sang "Run Come See", and Charlie sang "Outside Track", as he mentioned (two of my favorites-probably why I remember them....). I did "Farewell To Tarwathie", "The Jamestown Homeward Bound", and "Leave Her Johnny". I really enjoy reading the song list, it helps me to "replay" the session. Perhaps others can fill in more of the list.
Charlie, I thought your book illustrations were wonderful!

Don-

Thanks! Don is referring to the draft copies of Three Kitties Set Out to Sea and The Rodent Mariners. I'm really enjoying doing these illustrations, and I haven't done anything like this for years.

I'm now working up a third songbook titled Chanticleer the Shanghaied Rooster.
