that should read, the d7 shape becomes a g on third fret, and on the 6 fret a g inversion

The great thing about open G and open D is that you can play a lot of 5 string banjo Tunes.
so you also have a d7 second string first fret, third string second fret, fifth string second fret
c chord second fret 1st string, 1 fret 2 string,4 string 2 fret.
the d7 shape, becomes a g on the fourth fret , and on the 7 fret a g inversion with loads of ds and an f, a modal g with 3 ds and an f

Open G starter

Mind you, it makes you think... Like most people "of an age" I learned from the Bert Weedon Play with yourself in a day book. None of this fancy tuning there let me tell you!

They're not in G, but if you Google 'easy blues licks,' a lot of videos, etc, come up.

To start off with play easy stuff - Blowin the Wind is a favourite warm up piece for me and that tuning is great for those deep alternating bass things like Johhy Cash's I walk the line and Waylon Jennings good hearted woman.

Then complicate it - Iguess thats how Tommy started out. Find your own complications!

Thanks. I guess it just takes practice. When you're in open tuninig it feels like learning to play all over again. I got Dylan's arrangment of "I Was Young When I left Home" down, which feels awesome to play.

check out Kevin Brown, great slide player - he does one day courses in Bath every year.

check out Stefan Grossmans how to play blues guitar cd. also his book on open tunings.

Irish singer Paul Brady is very fond of this tuning also.

Well the fifth string is the one you start from with your thumb when its open G. Cover five on the fifth and the seventh fret for c and d and use the sixth string as a deep bass.the two finger am7 shape will also give you C, and fretting the secon and third string at the first and second fretts will give you an acceptable d7 - sort of sound.

Experiment with sliding thes shapesup the third fret - two shapes forward

Would anyone have some advice on how to play in the old style? I.e. I really want to have some idea on how to play things like "Jim Lee Blues" and Charlie Patton in general, or Tommy Johnson (right now those are my two favorites). I'd appreciate anything. I'm new to this site but I love this music... Blues, Country, Folk, Jazz - the real stuff!
