Subject: Lyr Add: ARE YOU WORKING? (NO! ARE YOU?) From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 Jun 12 - 02:54 AM The original words from the sheet music (see link above): ARE YOU WORKING? (NO! ARE YOU?) The sensational catch phrase song Written and composed by Fred. Sanford, Alec. Kendal, & Jos. Geo. Gilbert. Sung with great success [in Australia] by Jack Cannot in J. C. Williamson's pantomime "The Forty Thieves" Copyright 1922 by the Lawrence Wright Music Co., London. 1. Since this world began, of phrases we have had our share: "What, ho! She bumps," "my old brown son," and "dear old bean," "there's hair!" But now the latest thing you hear as you walk down the street, You can't be up to date if you don't cry out as you meet: CHORUS: Are you working? No! are you? Are you working? No! are you? Oh! oh! ev'rywhere you go When you meet a pal you say hello! hello! Are you working? No! are you? Three cheers for the red, white and blue! Tell me the old, old story. Are you working? No! are you? 2. Jones got wed to Mary Brown and twelve months after that Something you know came along to liven up the flat: A bouncing little baby boy, as soon as he could speak, Looked up at his papa and exclaimed in accents weak: CHORUS 3. Convict ninety-nine, a perfect gentleman was he. His one fault it was murder and his cell was number three. As he stood picking oakum with his poor hands blue and red, A warder passed and jokingly peeped through the door and said: CHORUS |

Subject: RE: Lyr req: 'Are you working? No, are you? From: Bugsy Date: 26 May 12 - 08:12 PM Are You Working. (lyrics as heard from Roy Bailey CD, "what you do with what you've got") Since the world began, of phrases we have had our share. "Let them eat cake" and"On your bike" and "Lord I do declare" But now the latest thing you'll hear when you walk down the street, You can't be up to date if you don't call out when you meet, Chorus: Are you working,no are you Are you working,no are you Oh, Oh everywhere you go when you meet a pall you say hello, hello Are you working, no are you Three cheers for the red white and blue Tell me the old old story\ Are you working, no are you Well Jonesy married Mary Ann and twelve months after that Something new arrived to liven up the flat A bonny bouncing baby boy, when he could hardly speak looked up at his mama and asked in accent rather weak Chorus........... Now Katie brown she ran through town the day she finished school She couoldn't wait to get a job, she knew she was no fool, But day by day to her dismay there were no jobs about And passing by the playground you could hear the kids all shout. Chorus........... Well back in nineteen twenty two when first this song was sung There wasn't any work about for my old dad and mum And now we sit and listen and these words they still are true WHat do we say to ourkis when they ask of me and you Chorus...... Hope this helps Cheers Bugsy |

Subject: Lyr & cords req: 'Are you working? No, are you? From: GUEST,emiaows Date: 26 May 12 - 04:25 PM I heard this song on an old cassette years ago and can't find any mention of it anywhere now, I don't know who sang it:-( The only words I can remember are (I believe) the chorus, which is: 'Are you working? No, are you?' (x2). Oh, Oh, everywhere you go, everyone you meet will say 'hello, hello', are you working? No, are you? Three cheers for the red, white and blue' (I can't remember the last two lines). Anyone out there know of this song, I'd really like to restore it for use! thanks... |
