Jim Saville (shantyfreak) and I are proud to announce the publication of The Complete Poetry of Cicely Fox Smith. We began this project together back in 2006 and it has been a fascinating journey, with many a twist and turn, as we pulled together all her poems from long out of print books and periodicals, and researched her life.

This newly released book contains about 640 poems with notes, hundreds of vintage illustrations, a discography of poems recorded as songs, and a short biography of this amazing poet. The price for the soft cover edition is about $40.

The e-book edition will soon be available as well at a considerably lower cost, approximately $15. We are also discussing a larger format edition, 8.5 X 11, which should not cost much more than the current edition which is 7 X 10.

Besides Jim and myself there a host of volunteers who have spent hours doing work on this project from all over the world. Here are some who we acknowledge in the book:

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This book could not have been completed without the encouragement and hard work of dozens of people all over the world. First of all we recognize Danny McLeod of the United Kingdom (UK) who has played such a principal role as a performer and researcher in reintroducing Cicely Fox Smith as a nautical poet to the world. Other major researchers include Alan Hardy (UK), A. B. Blackmore (UK), W. H. Webb (UK), John Edgar Mann (UK), Ian "Nobby" Dye (UK), and Bob Zentz (US).

Alan Fitzsimmons (UK) deserves special mention for first adapting so many of the poems that have been sung by McLeod and his bandmates. Other singers who have played a major role in adapting Smith's poems for singing include Bob Roberts (UK), Sarah Morgan (UK), Dick Miles of Ireland, Bob Zentz (US), Gordon Morris and Peter Massey (UK), William Pint and Felicia Dale (US), Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman (UK), Barrie Temple (UK), and Tom Lewis of Canada.

In addition there are web-based resource groups that were also of great assistance. Project Gutenburg deserves special mention for its on-line archives of Punch Magazine (up to and including 1922). Oldpoetry is a website where the entire collection of Smith's poetry (as of 2011) is now available. The Mudcat Café is a website for those interested in folk music whose forum has provided spirited discussion of Smith's work, clues for further research, and in some cases invaluable volunteers from all over the world.

There are the many volunteers who conducted research, photocopied or scanned hundreds of pages from exceedingly rare books or periodicals which could not be readily purchased in the used book market. Major work was done by Jenna Ipcar (US); Margaret Walters of Australia; Aziza Cooper and Bill Huot of Canada; Chris Roche, Jake Wade and Barrie Mathers of the United Kingdom.

Finally, we would like to thank Joanie DiMartino who introduced us to our publisher Michael Linnard, a publisher who had the courage and determination to see that this vast inventory of poems was republished as completely as possible.

We cannot personally thank everyone who has been of assistance in this project but know that your work was greatly appreciated.

My congratulations on reaching this epic milestone
If ever I was involved in a labour of love, then this has been the most enjoyable and satisying.
It is yet another wondeful example of Anglo-American co-operation. But it took a Yank to make us Brits realise what a literary marvel we were overlooking.
Charlie has mentioned many people above and the great thing about projects like this is the teamwork. Well done the team.

Thanks, Bradfordian and Ross, for the kind words and your appreciation of this effort.

I don't think I've enjoyed a project as much as this one. The poems are inspiring, for sure. But following the trail of Cicely Fox Smith led me to many far distant lands, and many new friends were made during the journey.

Our publisher Michael Linnard is also British and should be able to crack the UK market for this book. We should see if there is a way to market it via Chantey Cabin, although they don't normally sell books.

The amazing thing is the way that the very existence of Cicely Fox Smith has been virtually ignored by the whole literary establishment - not even a mention in reference books such as The Oxford Companion to Engish Literature.

However I see that Amazon UK still fails to acknowledge this book exists. Perhaps after official pubication date that might change. Might...

C. Fox Smith was quite successful in gaining literary and public recognition in her own time. That's quite evident considering her publication record, and the major publishers who began working with her during the World War 1 period. And the contemporary reviews support that conclusion. Actually, she did amazingly well considering how young she was when she got her first poetry books published. However, after the 1930s, interest in her work appeared to decline, only to be revived in the late 1990s by our folk music community; there are few if any other major poets who have had 90 of their poems adapted for singing.

Why interest declined is a question we'd like to have explored some more. Was it because she was a stronged-willed woman who did not fit in with the literary establishment? Did literary tastes shift from her style of poetry and her long term interest in the Age of Sail? She certainly did not stop writing excellent poetry, some of which continued to be published in Punch magazine until the year of her death in 1954. Perhaps, the publication of our book will provoke some serious interest if this poet from contemporary literary historians. We would hope so but we won't hold our breath.

So nice to hear another of our books has found a good home.

We sold 14 of the little darlings at Mystic. We had a wonderful time talking about the book and Cicely's life with the publisher and his assistant at dinner Thursday before the concert, and again on Sunday evening when we discussed the positive reaction of folks at the Festival to the launching of the book.

Jim and I will be bringing some to the Press Room next Saturday for show and tell.

We were concerned with how the book would look at 7" X 10" but it seems to work quite well, and is readily readable at 12 point font. Still, we'd love to see a hardcover edition at 8.5" X 11".

as to knowing about her work, Mike & I were talking with Stan Hugill during our early festival days and he emphatically pronounced that C. Fox Smith was the finest writer of nautical poetry, bar none. Of course, being the days before the web & Google ( which I only knew as a name for a REALLY BIG Number) and located in the US of A, we couldn't locate any of "his" books. Stan failed to mention that the C stood for Cicely. Not sure if had any of Basil Lubbock's books at the time, because some of her work is to be found there.

It took awhile, but thanks to you guys & other unsung sleuths, we have the fruits of your labor to enjoy.

Jim and I paid a visit to the Maine Maritime Museum today. One of our missions was to stop at the Museum Store and unlike Mystic (book buying decisions are run out of San Diego!) their store manager has full authority to order books and copies of my new CD. She was actually enthusiastic and ordered two copies of the book and four of the CDs.

My God, how the money rolls in!

One of the presenters fainted during that workshop but we have since learned that she is recovering and getting a full medical evaluation. Fortunately there were four Mystic volunteer staff people in attendance who were thoroughly familiar with emergency procedures. Jim and I filled in for her in the subsequent workshop.

Jim and I sold a couple more books at the Press Room sea music gathering on Saturday. I'm working on the Portland newspapers now for a literary review.

Some may wonder how we plan to market this book? Glad you asked!

Little Red Tree Publishing in Mystic doesn't have a marketing budget; we take turns with the publisher treating each other to lunch or dinner! So that pretty much leaves the marketing up to word of mouth, assisted by internet chat.

We've looking for suggestions for good reviewers, reviewers who have some sense of nautical poetry as practiced by Masefield and Fox Smith in the early 20th century and who might be intrigued with the story of a young woman who rose to prominence in a "man's field."

I'm also planning a couple of tours, Chicago and Virginia/Maryland, this summer. The Chicago foray will be from August 4 to August 12. The venture south will begin September 28 with Getaway Weekend (Annapolis area), shift to Richmond, and then to Newport News/Norfolk with Bob Zentz, through October 7th. I'm looking for bookstores, nautical music sessions, and other special events that I can tie in with while demonstrating how the poems have been adapted for singing and describing how Cicely went about her work.

Jim Saville in England will be looking for similar opportunities to promote the book.

On a related front, Bob Zentz will soon be publishing his own songbook of the two dozen or so Cicely Fox Smith poems he has adapted for singing and recorded. That added to my own songbook will cover more than 50 poems. We'll continue to encourage folks in the UK to pull together a 3rd volume, which would bring the number to more than 80 poems so adapted and recorded, some with multiple settings.

We're happy to follow up new leads with regard to any of the above. The book is solid, and we'd love it to reach far beyond out nautical folk music community.

Which also conflict with the Getaway-DC this year near Annapolis MD, where we're scheduled to be the last week of September.

Next year, I'm trying to pull together a Pacific Northwest tour which would culminate in Victoria, BC, where many of C. Fox Smith's poems were inspired. That would give me the opportunity of personally thanking the Victoria research volunteers who nailed down important details of her residency there.

Contacting the publisher directly or Amazon.com seems to be the most efficient way to purchase the book. I have copies also if you see me but they are very expensive to ship out, weighing 2.5 lbs.

Since the book was published one of our intrepid volunteers in the UK harvested two more poems from Punch magazine, which we had missed. Here's one of them:

"Dan" recalls the flaming demise of one of his favorite old ships, doomed by the spontaneous combustion of her cargo of wet coal.
