Subject: Tune Req: Traditional Mexican Melodies From: GUEST Date: 29 May 12 - 07:51 AM Hi all, I'm searching for some traditional melodies from Mexico and after much googling haven't turned up much (apart from the obvious La Bamba, El Son de la Negra, El Mariachi Loco and Guadalajara). I wondered if anyone on here might be able to point me in the direction of anything more obscure, folky and old? Thanks in advance |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Traditional Mexican Melodies From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 29 May 12 - 01:39 PM Get a copy of "A Treasury of Mexican Folkways," by Frances Tour. (Used copies through Abebooks). A good little paperback is "Corridos Mexicanos con acompañamiento para guitarra," Editores Mexicanos Unidos, S. A., 2004. Some have been posted here, but I don't know how to find them all. Put Mexican in the filter and set for all. Many links will appear, but most are to lyrics. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Traditional Mexican Melodies From: GUEST,Tony Date: 30 May 12 - 10:40 AM The album "Folkstyles Of Mexico & Colombia" has a lot of nice songs of that type. One that you can preview online is Lydia Mendoza's rendition of "Flores Negras" on YouTube. |

It's not specific to Mexico, but it was sung by an old woman in a dark tavern in that movie about Frida Kahlo. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Traditional Mexican Melodies From: GUEST,Tony Date: 30 May 12 - 12:11 PM Chavela Vargas is the woman who sang in the dark tavern. She's apparently a very well-known singer of Mexican folk songs, and might be a good source for you. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Traditional Mexican Melodies From: Nigel Parsons Date: 14 Jun 12 - 06:57 PM A Song of Mexico This one might suit. I remember it from school, but couldn't dig up the songbook at the end of May. Sorry for the delay! Cheers Nigel |
