OH, YOU BEAUTIFUL DOLL
(Words Seymour Brown, Music Nat D. Ayer; 1911)

1
Honey dear, When you're near,
Just turn out the light and then come over here,
Nestle close, Up to my side,
My heart's on fire, With love's desire.

In my arms, rest complete,
I never thought that life could ever be so sweet,
Till I met you some time ago,
But now you know I love you so

2
Precious prize, Close your eyes,
Now we're goin' to visit love's paradise,
Press your lips Again to mine,
Love is king Of ev'ry thing,

Squeeze me dear, I don't care!
Hug me just as if you were a grizzly bear,
This is how I'll go through life,
No care or strife, When you're my wife.

Refrain
Oh, you beautiful doll,
You great, big, beautiful doll,
Let me put my arms about you,
I could never live without you.

Oh, you great, big beautiful doll!
If you ever leave me how my heart will ache,
I want to hug you but I fear you'd break,
Oh, oh, oh, oh,
Oh, you beautiful doll!

Chords were given above.

I suppose its down to personal choice. the longer you keep it on the G spot - the more fun you can have with it. Whereas if you chop another chord into that progression

I just used the basic

020100

I suppose you could use the C7 shape but it's a bit far from the basic G chord.

Yeh I can see that stuff works. ithink i'd still leave out the first E. What E would you be using there?

I like the c7 moved up for the e flat. i used that on the intro of my song about Franz Beckenbauer

That first E7 comes on the word Doll. Try it there. It works for me.

WEll, thinking I might have been sticking my neck out rather on the claim re the E7 chord, I thought I'd check. I've just listened to the first four youtube versions I found, and every one had the chord in, so I can feel justified in my claim. There are some great versions, have a google!

BIg Al: you can leave that E7 in bar 2 out if you like, you don't actually need it. But believe me, search the world's recorded archives and I'll bet you 99.9% of recordings of the song have that chord in!It gives the smooth transition to A7 which to me(and to the guy who wrote the tune)is an integral part of the piece.
The easiest version of the Eflat if you don't use barre or jazz fingerings is to play the C7 shape on the inside 4 strings, taken up 3 frets. This gives you a perfect Eflat7.

Just had a play through. I can't hear that first move to E, Greg. I'd leave that out. he A7 is nice enough on its own. the only tricky bit is where you've put E flat for the line I wanna love yo, but I'm feard you'd break.

I think better than an Eflat -sort of Cshape moved up three . Is if you play a simple E minor shape moved one fret down. Sounds good to me

That final descent into E is beautififul though. A good job, young Greg!

What fools they are, not to recognise this as English folksong!

That last bit should have been /G E7/ = half a bar G, half a bar E7

Here you go.
/G-/G E7/A7-/A7-/
/D7-/D7-/G-/G D7/
/G-/G E7/A7-/A7D7/
/G-/G-/Eflat-/Eflat-/
/G B7/Em Em7/A7-D7/G-/

/G-/ = one bar of G
/G-E7/   =half a bar G, half a bar E7
Enjoy
