I'm sure this is a "borrowed tune" but I'm so used to hearing this song now that I can't easily think of the original.

Assuming I'm correct, can anyone help out?
It's actually a very nice melody but I'd rather not sing or play "Star of the Bar" itself as, while it is a "classic",

a)it is already ubiquitous and, arguably, oversung
b) it is more suited to a "macho male" type of performer as opposeed to a sensitive, caring "new man" such as myself.
:-)

It seems to be vaguely related to "Get Along Little Dogies".

Some similarity but I'm not sure i'd want to have that one in my repertoire either.

However, I've just been playing the tune and I notice that the chorus "Nae better than maist etc" is uncannily similar to that of "Ye banks and braes of Bonny Doon".
The verses don't really match though.

I have always thought the melody underlying "and what drew me tae her".. etc was very reminiscent of "Ye Banks and Braes", but I'm not sure that the rest borrows heavily from any other tune. I could be missing something though.

So it might be influenced by a couple of other sources, but not enough so that it could be said to be an original complete tune. ( I think )

The verse is a little bit like "The Road and the miles to Dundee".
