From: GUEST,Natalie Wright

The Captain Cook Inn, 60 Staithes Lane, Staithes, North Yorkshire, TS13 5AD, will once again be hosting the annual Staithes Acoustic Music Festival from Wednesday 25th through to Sunday 29th July 2012.

As per previous years everyone is welcome and there is only one rule....
NOTHING CAN BE PLUGGED IN - MUST BE ACOUSTIC.

This event is very informal, as anybody who has attended in the past will know, and nobody books a spot - it is a case of everyone taking turns one song at a time and whoever wants to join in plays along and accompanies.

There will be some excellent deals to be had at The Cook as per usual with offers such as FISH, CHIPS, MUSHY PEA'S AND A PINT OF REAL ALE FOR JUST £6.50.

Also this year due to popular demand there will be a choice of TEN REAL ALES, CIDER AND PERRY.

Bed and Breakfast at The Cook is already fully booked but Roraima House (8 doors along the road) still as a few vacancies. Their phone number is (01947) 841423.

Camping is available through Vanessa Ditchburn and starts at £5.50 per tent per night including fully plumbed showers and toilets. Camper vans and caravans with electric hook-ups are also catered for and dogs are welcome.

Vanessa can be contacted on (01947) 840882, mobile 07854953986 or email:- vanessaditchburn@hotmail.co.uk

As this event was originally set up to raise funds for charity it as been decided to revert back to just that. Although no recognised charity has received any funds from this event for the past few years this year will see THE AIR AMBULANCE receive 10% of the Cooks bar take and all of the change collected in the Air Ambulance's official collection boxes.

For further information please contact Natalie on (01947) 840200, mobile 07791797265

Nat.

Anxious to visit your festival. I have been a lot of years ago can't remember how many but guess it must be less than 10 From memory You have accommodation at the pub. Do you have a web site and are you doing food. I can't play any instruments but I would like to call in for a jar of ale (or 2) do you still do a variety of file real ales. I hope so I don't know of anywhere that serves a pint as good as you.

Dan

Always look forward to this one and I'm glad it's gone back to being a charity fundraiser. And Dan, the cask ale is as fine as ever.

A few weeks ago I went to the Black Bull Bender, not very far from Staithes. This was the first Bender since Jim Wikinson, its much-loved founder, died earlier in the year. On the Saturday evening a large number of Jim's extended family sang one of his favourite songs - Little Pot Stove, an emotional moment as you may imagine. I'm looking forward to the Staithes event in the spirit of a couple of lines from that song: Meet your old friends and we'll sing a song; hope the journey wasn't long.

This coming Thursday, July 26th, the Men of Staithes will host a maritime singaround in the Captain Cook Inn at Staithes, as part of the festival. Come along and sing something with a bit of salt, or even just water, in it; or or you musicians looking for a session home come and play us The Three Sea Captains, or The Sea Breeze, or in fact anything else. We will be singing a mixture of shanties, sea songs and maritime hymns.

There will be the usual choice of excellent beer, and this year something new, Natalie's welcoming smile. Ten percent of the beer takings plus any other funds raised will go to the Air Ambulance.

Quick reminder. Come along this evening and sing a few sea songs or shanties. There's a mini beer festival on as well - only mini because there are a mere nine cask ales, three ciders and a perry. Should be plenty for most people, certainly for me!

Hi Mr Happy ,
I think the answer lies in that old issue - Local Folk Music Politics.
I'm sure you'll have experienced the syndrome at sometime or other.

Hi Mr Happy
On the Saturday for most part there was not one folk song to be heard in the pub. We arrived at about 1.30pm and were told there would be singing at 4 pm ..... then 5 pm. Nothing had happened by 6 pm so we went walkies down to the seafront and wandered around Staithes till 8 pm when we ventured back to the pub but ..... still nothing. So we had a few more drinks and chatted to locals and the numerous but extremely well-behaved dogs. Just before 10 pm. a group of 5-6 musicians came in and introduced themselves and played for about 45 minutes - it was pleasant and very welcome - I think they felt sorry for us. And that was it, a very strange event which belied the title 'Folk Festival' as the banner outside stated!

GUEST,Swaleman,

Thanks for further info.

Me & the gang had a superb time singing, playing, listening, cavorting etc with the numerous talented folk at the Fox Inn in Roxby, but we'd originally intended to join sessions at the Staithes event as well.

Unfortunately, the relationship between the Captain Cook and the founder & organiser of the Staithes festival broke down following a dispute over funding, resulting in the split between Staithes festival and the new Roxby festival. The Landlord of the Fox Inn at Roxby was approached as an alternative and was delighted to get the opportunity to stage a 1st Roxby Music Festival. All the folks who had previously attended the Staithes fest at the Captain Cook followed the organiser to his new venue, together with a considerable number of new performers and a large number of other folk & families.

The festival was a tremendous success. It's a pity that it didn't really happen for the Captain Cook; I always enjoyed the beer/music/good company there. However, if the number of folk that turned up for the Roxby festival had gone to the Captain Cook then it would have created its own problems through lack of space. The Fox Inn main room is larger; there are other spaces available too - but even then it came under considerable strain at times. I suspect the landlord will be looking to increase his capacity somehow in time for next year's event.

Well seeing how many other fairly quiet & pleasant pubs there seem in the immediate vicinity, perhaps next year can see some 'overspill' happening to ease the congestion at the Fox?
