Subject: Fields of Athenry goes to the World Cup From: pattyClink Date: 14 Jun 12 - 10:00 PM I don't pretend to know what's going on here between the soccer and the German narration, but apparently once the Irish team was too far behind to catch up, the spectators started singing....what????? Insights welcome... clip |
Subject: RE: Fields of Athenry goes to the World Cup From: Anglo Date: 14 Jun 12 - 10:37 PM The chorus of Athenry, again and again. On the whole I prefer You'll Never Walk Alone. |

Defeat won't get you down let's have a party anyway and celebrate just being there and being together. So they start singing what is a football anthem for them - just as it is at Celtic Park too. I remember in Malaga in 1982 after Scotland went out due to only drawing with the Soviet Union the streets were thronged with what looked like Scottish fans celebrating. Everyone was happily singing "we're out the world cup" to the tune of "Those Were The Days My Friend". The Spaniards seemed more than a tad bemused but it was much better than acting like your world had fallen apart. Only a game! |

Subject: RE: Fields of Athenry goes to the World Cup From: Steve Gardham Date: 15 Jun 12 - 01:46 PM It was heart-warming to see the Irish and Spanish fans all intermixed with their arms round each other. I don't bloody care what they were singing, it was better than snarling at and insulting each other. Well done these fans. They achieved something far better than winning a few football matches. |
Subject: RE: Fields of Athenry goes to the World Cup From: GUEST,henryp Date: 15 Jun 12 - 02:24 PM Fans of Glasgow Celtic FC have adopted the song, and Pete St John has performed it for them at Parkhead. Other fans who sing it include those of the Irish national soccer team, GAA teams and the Ireland, Munster and London Irish rugby union teams. Glasgow Rangers fans have their own version - Low lie the fields of Ballynafeigh. Liverpool fans sing; All round the fields of Anfield Road, Where once we watched the king Kenny play - and could he play, We had Heighway on the wing, We had dreams and songs to sing, Of the glory round the fields of Anfield Road. It's become a folk song! |

No way to say it better than that, Steve. |

Subject: RE: Fields of Athenry goes to the World Cup From: Leadfingers Date: 16 Jun 12 - 04:22 PM At least the Footie fans dont sing it as a dirge , even if they dont know all the verses as SO many unaccompanied singers do . Sing it as a dirge that is ! Its a good song , but does need a bit of a lilt to make it fly ! |
