Subject: Anybody have Hughie Jones' CD Seascape? From: Richard from Liverpool Date: 18 Jun 12 - 11:44 AM Hello all. I've (legally!) downloaded tracks from Hughie Jones' album Seascape, but because I've gone for downloads rather than buying the CD, I'm without any of the associated sleeve notes. Is there anybody out there who has the CD and could help me by providing some of the sleeve notes? In particular, I'm interested to know what (if anything) he says with regards to his version of Firing the Mauretania Thanks! |

From: Reinhard Date: 18 Jun 12 - 02:39 PM He didn't write anything about the song's content just about how he learned it: "Firing the Mauretania was introduced to the folk revival by the late Redd Sullivan. I have heard it more recently from an old boy in Liverpool. Did he hear it from Redd or did Redd hear it from him? We shall never know." |
Subject: RE: Anybody have Hughie Jones' CD Seascape? From: Snuffy Date: 18 Jun 12 - 05:48 PM I learned it from Hughie's CD. After I sang it in a shanty session at Bishop's Castle Festival in 2002, Martin Hugill told me that Redd Sullivan definitely wrote it, but he didn't say how he knew! |

Subject: RE: Anybody have Hughie Jones' CD Seascape? From: Richard from Liverpool Date: 19 Jun 12 - 05:21 AM Thank you, I think I have what I was looking for. What I was curious to know was whether this version came via Redd Sullivan or from a completely different source. Apparently it didn't come directly from him, but Hughie doesn't rule out that it might have come from him in the long run. (Especially given that people often claim that Redd Sullivan wrote it) Bernard, I'm working down in Cambridge at the moment but will try to get to the Everyman folk club again when I'm back in Liverpool (although it's a little bit tricky timing-wise because my dad and I usually sing in the Derby Arms in Aughton on Wednesday nights) |
