I don't think it has been networked on UK-wide BBC yet, but there is an outstanding documentary, anchored by Jools Holland, trying to distill the essence of the 'London Sound'.

It has some great interviews with Ray Davies of the Kinks, Joe Brown of the Bruvvers and also Roy Hudd, but the show-stealer is Eliza Carthy and Mawkin knocking out the original version of St James Infirmary Blues.

This is a Must See

It is indeed a very good (and wide-ranging) programme: it was on BBC2 about two - three weeks ago.

The thread on Jools Holland at The Southwell Festival turned into a discussion of the programme, which might be why you missed the earlier thread.

Is there a "trick" or password for non London viewers to see this?

Can anyone explain how a so called original version of "St James Infirmary Blues" helps to distill the essence of the London Sound? Is it really the version of The Unfortunate Rake which refers to Woolwich Barracks? I have never thought of the song St James Infirmary which seems also seem to have developed from the same source to be a blues.

Hoot

thanks for the link

Auldtimer, it takes some seconds, but after a while, a Play arrow appears on the video. I played it fine from across the pond.
