Subject: Review: Fastnet--new maritime festival
From: GUEST,Gina and Bill Dunlap

We just returned from a new sea music festival, in Ballydehob, near Skibbereen in West Cork. It's the Fastnet Maritime and Folk Fest, and it ran from Friday night through Sunday night (June 15-17, 2012). This being the first (hopefully not the last), it was smallish by Mystic standards, but it was a delightful weekend.

Among the listed performers were Baggyrinkle, Trim Rig and a Doxy, Andrew McKay/Carole Etherton, Andy Kenna, Verna Connolly, Devil's Wate, Capstan Full Strength, Henk Voss, Free Spirit, and After the Storm.   On the landlubber side (as one of the sing-alongs was bi lled) were Matt Cranitch and Jackie Daly (who played together and separately), Rattlesnake County, Molly O'Mahony, and Norman Collins. There were Irish trad sessions, Scottish country dancing, and traditional French dancing (led by Marie Laure Hasse).

Most of the action was in five pubs right in the town center, with some in the community center and the Methodist Church. Weather permitting (and it did, to the surprise of many), there were concerts on an outdoor stage down by the bay.

Ballydehob is a beautiful small town and the locals were very welcoming. It is just a few kilometers' drive to great views of Fastnet and its historic lighthouse, and just a few kilometres more to Mizenhead, Ireland's most southerly point with its great views and small maritime museum (and café).

The festival kicked off about 9 on Friday night with two singarounds, a trad session, and two individual concerts. Saturday morning saw five workshops – Jackie Daly, fiddle; Matt Cranitch, button accordion; Andy Kenna, John Masefield poems set to music; Tomas Wiegandt, percussion; and Norman Collins, understanding harmony and chords. The outdoor concert started about 2, and the sing-alongs and concerts started in earnest about 3 and lasted till well after midnight. Aside from the workshops, Sunday was much like Saturday. We left about 6 to get back to Dublin.

We keep saying 'singalong', but they were actually set up as miniconcerts. One of them had a series of 30-minute sets from maybe a half-dozen performers. The one we mainly attended (and preferred) was run by Verna Connolly and Dick Miles at Levi's Pub. They had the performers do three songs, and then took three floor singers from the audience, then another performer and more floor singers. All the sings that we went to at Levi's were rousing affairs, and we both sang at all of them.

The festival was, we understand, conceived, instigated, and organized almost singlehandedly by Dick Miles, who also raised the funds, performed, ran singalongs, headed up the songwriting competition, booked taxis for performers, and was called out of the competition when a toilet got blocked. He did an amazing job and should be congratulated.

Ireland has few sea music festivals, and unfortunately Fastnet fell on the same weekend as the third annual Rosses Point sea shanty festival, near Sligo Town. We went to that last year, and would have gone back this year but for the conflict. We made the right choice this year but would have liked to go to both. We hope that both festivals will thrive in future, but hopefully on separate weekends.

Gina and Bill Dunlap

Thankyou,
As far as I can make out, Rosses sea festival has previously been held in August, this year the date was changed to June.
I tried to plan the Fastnet Festival so that it did not clash with anything else, if I had been aware that Rosses intended to change to JUNE 15, I would have chosen another weekend.
Ballydehob has five festivals which to some extent limits my choice of weekends, my idea was to put it on a weekend when there was very little happening in my region[Munster],and halfway between the Ballydehob Jazz festival[may bank holiday] and the Ballydehob summer festival [august].Ballydehob Summer Festival

Ballydehob Summer Festival will take place from Friday 10th – 20th August, with Old Boats arriving at the pier on Saturday 11th. It's great fun for all the family, and many people also travel into the village to enjoy the activities. Live music, street parade and games, pub quizzes and much more.
The Fastnet Festival was a success and next year I plan to do it again, on the same weekend June 14 15 16, Hope to see you all again.

It is good to hear about a new festival being a success. On this side of the Irish Sea we are hearing a lot about festival attendances being devastated by the appalling weather.
Well done to Dick and his helpers.

Gina and Bill-

Thanks so much for your review of this new festival.

And thanks again to Dick Miles for his courage and perseverance in organizing it. How was your adaptation of C. Fox Smith's poem "Old Fastnet" received?

If anyone took any photos, I'm sure there are people here who would love to see them.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Thankyou Vic,
I was very lucky with the weather, [Ballybane] which is a mile and a half outside of Ballydehob was pissing with rain, but Ballydehob was sunny.
I will try and work out how to get photos from facebook to this site and transfer.
Old Fastnet has got a middling good reception the tomatoes they threw were not in a tin.
There are one or two things I intend to do differently next year, for example,I might have the riverside concerts on the Sunday only.

Dick-

What you might try is putting together a "Facebook Album" of Fastnet photos and providing a link here, as I've done with the Mystic Sea Music Festivals. You need to dumb down the photos to about 2 MB for them to load into a Facebook album.

It's always difficult to get good festival photos. The lighting conditions can be very poor and performers move! But some people have very good cameras, not to mention good luck, and are quite willing to share what they've shot.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Jim Bainbridge's version goes something like:-

I went to the market with my brother Jim
When someone threw a tomato at him
Now, tomatoes don`t hurt, when they come in their skin
but this bugger did, it was still in a tin.

The tune, obviously, is Villikins & His Dinah

I'm pretty sure that Jim used to sing it when I used to go with him to the Friday night sessions at Rosie McCann's ...... in Ballydehob.

He did indeed, in fact jim was my next door neighbour at that time in Dunbeacon.
and please excuse me for the correction but rosie was in fact Rose o Sullivan, The pub used to be nicknamed Rosies, but she liked to be called Rose.
The session in that pub was started in 1986 by my partner Cathy Cook. IMO the area misses Jim Bainbridge, i had many good sessions with him, always a good mix of songs and tunes

Many thanks to all those involved in the organisation of this wonderful friendly festival. The singaround in Levis's bar was fantastic; there was such a good feeling about the whole event and a genuine respect for everyone's musical contribution. Long may it continue.

Some very nice videos! I believe I had a sighting of Andy Kenna playing concertina in one of them.

Yes, we really enjoyed the festival. Ballydehob seems a very friendly place, the weather held out despite the deluges elsewhere, and the venues were splendid. Congratulations to Dick for a first-class job of organisation. Like all the best festivals, it gave the appearance of 'running itself', but in reality there was a lot of effort going on behind the scenes to make sure it all went smoothly. Here's to next year!
