Here's the maritime music lineup for the coming weekend-plus's Seattle Wooden Boat Festival (there will also be non-maritime music, but I don't have that lineup). Info supplied by Alice Winship.


This Friday, June 29, Broadside & the Handsome Cabin Boys will lead the Northwest Seaport Chantey Sing aboard the schooneAdventuress at Lake Union Park in Seattle. This will take the place of the July Chantey sing, so don't miss Friday's Sing. 7:30 to 9:30 pm. It's free.

There will be music during all five days of the Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival. Here are the acts that will include maritime music:

I'd love to see the "Shanty Showcase," lots of names there from my archives of nautical music from the Pacific Northwest.

Would have been nice to have posted this schedule a week or so sooner, rather than when it was half over, grumble, grumble. However, some follow-up photos and a report would be most welcome.

Yeah, sorry about the late notice, I posted it on the 27th as soon as I got the email from Alice Winship. And I won't be at the Shanty Showcase myself, as I will be manning the Northwest Seaport booth so Alice can be at/in the Showcase... I'll see what I can do about getting and posting (or posting links to) photos and report. The Center for Wooden Boats, primary sponsor of the Festival, may post some photos on their blog, Bearings or elsewhere, but I wouldn't count on it, they tend to be more "mainstream" in their focus. I'll see what Northwest Seaport can do. Or maybe Victory Music, whose online magazine, Victory Review carries Alice's "Maritime Musings" column.

Lots of fun at the shanty showcase, but very sparse crowd. I guess people just don't festivals on weeknights, even on the eve of a holiday. The rock-music beer garden was also sparse, so it wasn't just the genre.

Crowd or no crowd, it was fun! All three days I was there seemed very sparsely attended. The weather didn't help, nor did the construction mess or the shortage of parking. It all made us even more appreciative of the few devoted listeners who braved the gales and showers.

Hmmm? Sounds familiar. Lots of fun for those most involved but no large crowds.

Even the Mystic Sea Music Festival only brings in 500-600 for the evening concerts. It's hard to figure out what's needed to re-invigorate these special events so that they draw in more of the general public. Once they are there, they generally enjoy themselves but we got to get them there!
