Well, I suppose both Andrez and SRS are correct. Antivirus software, in and of itself, does not affect cookies. HOWEVER, most of us have packages of utilities that control all sorts of stuff (in addition to viruses) that can adversely affect our computers, and most of those packages include something that controls cookies. And although these packages include far more than antivirus software, we tend to call the packages "antivirus programs."

And I suppose that most of us don't differentiate between viruses and worms and trojan horses and whatnot, and we tend to call the whole lot "viruses."

So, strictly speaking, SRS is correct. According to common usage, Andrez is correct.

I beg to differ SRS. I recently changed a setting in my virus protection: Intego Virus Barrier for Mac OSX. This was a specific cookie filter in the Firewall settings and was turned on as I hadn't used it previously and wanted to see how effective it was. I use several extensions to block, ads and Googles nosy data collectors with no harm to my web browsing and so I had assumed that it would accept currently existing cookies and then act to block and alert me to accept or decline the cookie.

This was an error on my part and several days later when I started having problems logging in to Mudcat, I didn't make a connection with what I had done earlier and the current problem. Advice from Joe was to no avail as well. No amount of cookie resetting left it in place. Before I got into heavy duty trouble shooting I did some checks and found that when the filter was enabled the Mudcat cookie disappeared. Hence this Intego function is now disabled and there are no further problems.

I think the keyword is that Virus protection shouldn't affect cookies of logon but it can, hence my small contribution earlier.

Cheers,

Andrez

Virus protection shouldn't affect the Mudcat cookies or logon, but a browser update or reinstall could.

Based on my recent experience, first time ever of losing my cookie (as opposed to my marbles ;-) its worth double checking you havent recently installed or changed any any setting in your virus protection software and/or firewall?

Cheers,

Andrez

I think the automatic password sender rarely works, John. I tried it just now, and it wasn't working. E-mailing joe@mudcat.org works almost every time, except when I'm sleeping or on vacation....

If you didn't get the email, it's likely because the email address on record at mudcat isn't the one you're using now.

If you can still access mail at an old address, you might be able to retrieve it.

If not, you will need to email Joe.

1. Put "mudcat" in the subject line so he'll know it's important enough to look at.
2. Include your member name.
3. If possible include the old email address you used.
4. Include a new address where you'll get the reply. (He can probably read the address you sent from, from the email you send, but it's best to include it specifically.)
5. Other information you might think will help convince Joe that it's really you can be helpful.

I think the right addy for joe is "joe@mudcat.org" but you can check it at several place on the 'cat.

John
