Yeehah!
Tom had his long awaited appointement with his surgeon this morning and, of course, a new x-ray.

Dr. Blitzer pointed out new bone growth on the x-ray, congratulated Tom, and gently kicked him out of the office and into the hands (later this week) of the Rockingham VNA physical therapist to teach him how to walk again.

He said his only fear would be arthritis in his ankle...which would only be a worry if Tom were a soccer player in his 30s. Somehow I don't think this is a problem in a 70 year old concertina player...

But the BOOT is GONE!!! And Tom can put weight on the ankle which means he should be up and cooking again soon.

Meanwhile, he's not pushing it -- he came back up the stairs to the house on his tush. He did try out some options first, but he is going to be safe. Time enough with the physical therapist's advice.

He's lost lots of muscle in his right leg, but he should improve with therapy and without that damned boot. I think I'll continue massaging his leg...actually both of them. It can't hurt and may very well help his (as confirmed by his podiatrist last Friday) very bad circulation.

Linn

Taking it easy is good.
A normal healing time in an immobilization devise causes muscle wasting, and he's been in it for a lot longer. Tom, be careful and get the strength back first. If you try doing cartwheels before your leg's strong, you hurt something else ...then Linn buys some rat poison and it's all downhill from there.

Fundamentally, though: YAHOO!!!

Good luck with all the physio. I am also in the hands of our local phsioterrorist, ankle problems too. Mostly arthritis, but also got a couple of bone spurs that may or may not, have to go.
Remember to walk with a pronounced limp.

Linn, that's wonderful! One thing my osteo doc told when working on my legs...always rub in an UP direction from toes etc. That helps to open the circulation outlets. Rubbing down, brings the fluid back down and can actually damage the little things that open wide to let blood through.

For the time being, he's still mostly in the wheelchair. He's got a lot of work to do to get back strength in his leg(s).

Yesterday, he attempted to stand when he got out of the car and thought better of it. At the steps, he DID see what he was capable of...and came up on his tush. Better to be safe...

Not sure when the nice Polish lad from the Rockingham VNA who will be his physical terrorist will be out. When he came in May to introduce himself and suggested Tom might find him a harsh taskmaster, I offered him the use of my cat o' nine tails...;-)

After this morning's rain, the day got dryer, though showers were predicted and there's supposed to be a thunder storm tonight. So we didn't go to a musical/social gathering at friends'.

It's thundering now.
I missed Demmon's this morning, but it was raining and I was sleeping--something I haven't been doing a lot of.
It's always best to have a somewhat tyrannical PT person. It would be too easy to manipulate nice, sympathetic ones, but I don't think the nice ones last. Not drill sergeants, not physical therapists.

Liberation!

Tom had a very profitable session with his therapist this morning...and he can now easily get out onto the deck BY HIMSELF with a walker and can go up and down the deck steps using the handrail and a cane.

He and I sat out there for quite awhile, talking, and me deadheading the petunias. I also lopped off a low limb on the maple over the holding bed (still need to get the tree saw out and some work done) and cut back the forsythia I want to move to where the kiwi roots still are. (One thing at a time...) Did some other exterior neatifying while Tom enjoyed spending time in this morning's lovely weather. I think we'll eat lunch on the deck as well.

He has a 2 p.m. appointment with his dentist later -- maybe he'll have his dentures today! -- and WE WON'T BE BRINGING THE WHEELCHAIR!!! (Just the walker.) Yeehah!

This is liberation for ME as well as for Tom. He can probably get in and out of The Press Room with just the walker, too. (I can pull up right in front.)

Which means I've got to liberate his low stool from the cellar so he can practice his concertina -- he hasn't been able to play since March because of the arms on the wheelchair and on the other chairs he's been limited to. We're both looking forward to relegating the wheelchair to the cellar, too.

You have no idea how much simpler going to a doctor's appointment is with Tom on his own two feet, sans heavy boot, and being able to leave the wheelchair in the house!

Zip, zip...Tom had a denture fitting and we were out of there. I think the next ones from the lab are the for real ones.

The hospital, of course, paid for the new dentures because they lost his old ones, but last week they were supposed to send Tom a $50 gas card for "pain and suffering" and to cover (yeah, right -- 40 mile round trip and I think it's been four times already) gas to and from the dentist. Haven't seen it yet...

Looking so much better.

Remind me what kind of walker Tom is using. Is it one of the 4-wheel models with a seat and basket? That's the kind my mother has found most useful. She zips around the house and yard at a much smarter pace than she ever did with the other kind of walker with only 2-wheels.

And adding "pulls" to the door frames made it ever so much easier to navigate up the last step and through a door.

No, Charley, not a rollator (although we have one). What is safer and easier for Tom to use right now is a regular walker -- no little wheels, either, or tennis balls on the legs.

And he'll only be needing to use a cane before long -- maybe by next week.

Tom managed to find himself on the floor last night. I was reading late and heard a suspicious sound, headed for the stairs and asked if he was okay -- he said he needed my help.

Not sure what happened exactly, but he was on his knees over by the table (I had left him tucked into bed) and the wheelchair was on its side.

He easily pulled himself up using his good ankle and got back into the wheelchair. He needed to sit and compose himself and I needed to bandage a new spot on his arm that was bleeding. (He takes blood thinners, so there are splotches where the skin is very very thin and sensitive.)

Got him ensconced back in bed and went back upstairs in hopes of finishing my book. Almost. Finally too tired to read, turned off the light, but had problems getting to sleep. Kept hearing things and even went to check a couple times.

Slept like shit.

I finished the book a couple minutes ago...

Yes, but today has been a more or less wasted day. After getting Tom's coffee and breakfast and doing a couple other pressing things, I took a nap. Slept through his therapist (so he didn't get started on climbing the stairs because he didn't want to wake me).

I don't nap well. So, while I feel better than before the nap, I'm not exactly bright-eyed and bushy tailed. (That's more Rufus's department anyway.) I have the ambition of a dead haddock.

Got to head to the pharmacy, though, this afternoon and pick up the meds that weren't ready yesterday (and wait for the one Tom didn't notice until this morning that he needed). Sigh.

I'll take yesterday's laundry upstairs and read the new book. And resist the temptation to go back to sleep. Dinner is more or less leftovers (but I'll fry up the baked potato along with some onions -- I'll have to think while doing that), so mindless. Just don't have the energy to do anything outside (or inside, for that matter).

Funny. Sometimes waking up too early or sleeping poorly doesn't bother me a bit. Other times even a nap leaves me knackered and useless.

Returning to bed from using the commode. Sheesh, Sinsull, Kendall REALLY wants to read THAT!

I think I need to convince Tom to give up peeing...it's waaaaaay too dangerous.

Exactly how he ended up on the floor on his knees and the wheelchair on its side, I haven't a clue and he hasn't offered one. It's really tiring to have to listen to and interpret every sound. If I'd been asleep with the fan on, I may have missed it. Not sure what he would have done then. He didn't have his whistle with him and his flashlight was turned to the floor.

No, ChanteyLass, TOM didn't miss his therapist's appointment -- I did. I was taking a nap upstairs and didn't hear anything until she was leaving. She wanted to start him on the stairs up to the bedrooms/bathroom, but he suggested another time because he didn't want my nap disturbed.

His therapy is moving right along at a great clip. Now if I could get him to exercise a little more caution about making sure he puts pressure on things (commode, wheelchair, etc.) evenly so he doesn't tip over...

Easy enough to put a urinal by his bed or even a large plastic coffee can with a lid. Better than having nighttime drama. Add some wet wipes and you can both sleep peacefully.

Nope, we've gone over that before. He won't use one. Nope. Never. 'Nuff said.

He just needs to stop putting unequal pressure on chairs, etc. so they tip over.

He would have been okay the other night eventually (or so he assures me). If I hadn't heard and come down to help, he would have made his way over to the couch and pulled himself up. But it was dark and he couldn't see well. And getting back into the wheelchair was easier. I'm glad I heard, but it's nervewracking. I'm constantly listening, even on a subconscious level, and interpreting any sounds because Tom can't call out for help. I'm sure I annoy him, coming halfway down the stairs to ask if he's okay. But that one time out of twenty (or whatever) that he needs help means I'm doing the right thing. But it's tiring and means I really can never truly relax.

It's getting better all the time. And he's actually, what with all the therapy AND the dragging himself around with his upper body, in a lot better physical shape than he's been in years.

I just wish he had come with some kind of warranty...

Baby monitors are even worse (and more expensive) than 2-way radios which we've tried and don't work because they pick up the neighbors' frequencies and are also likely to wake me up in the middle of the night with a burst of unnecessary static.

Tom has a whistle. Which works.

Having to listen and interpret sounds is nothing new...

I didn't kill him tonight at The Press Room. And I probably won't. But sometimes it's REAL tempting. (I did yell at him, though, in front of God and everybody. I apologized.)

I guess sometimes I just need to remind him and everybody else that I'm NOT a saint.

It's okay now, but I really need a couple aspirin, a gin and tonic, and a little peace.

Maybe we can blame it on the weather...

Linn

"I'm glad I heard, but it's nervewracking. I'm constantly listening, even on a subconscious level, and interpreting any sounds because Tom can't call out for help."

Been there and I agree. I slept many nights beside a couch in case this person fell off it so they would fall on me and not on the floor. You get to the point where irregular breathing wakes you up. Nervewracking is putting it mildly. I hope the situation improves soon for both of you.

The past month has been uneventful...and that's a GOOD thing!

Bart, Tom's physical therapist from Visiting Nurses comes twice a week and makes him work or, at least, give's Tom direction and exercises. Tom is pretty focused on becoming more mobile.

He's still using the wheelchair around the house, at the table and between the table and the computer, the table and kitchen, the table and his bed on the couch. But he's not only progressed out of the wheelchair and into a walker to go outside and to the car for doctors' appointments and The Press Room, but he's now using the walker only for exercises...he's walking with the cane only outside of the house.

So Tom can go out on the deck by himself and also be able to control the radio, etc. inside and stand up to do some things in the kitchen. He still needs help seeing things so still hasn't taken over the bulk of the cooking duties, but today he was able to go inside the grocery store for the first time in five months. He got around in one of the motorized carts while I walked next to him and also made excursions to get things in aisles that were more crowded. Reminded me by the time we finished that I really need to be able to hang onto a cart while moving around the store.

About three weeks ago Tom had the final fitting for his new dentures and today went in to get the finished product and make the initial fitting tweaks. We've got an appointment to see Dr. Harvey on Wednesday for further fine tuning after wearing them for a couple days.

So this is truly a progress report on several fronts -- progress is definitely continuing to be made and Tom's in a heck of a lot better shape than he was a month ago.

And I've survived the past three weeks, too -- through adverse effects of a wasp sting, allergic reaction to the antibiotic prescribed for the wasp sting, AND the nasty side effects of the prednisone prescribed to counteract the allergic reaction. Arghhh! I've come full circle and am back to whatever passes for "normal", while Tom, on the other hand, has continued to improve.

I think, too, that, thanks to the physical therapy and workouts to just move around, Tom is in better physical shape than he was before he broke his ankle. Things do, ultimately, work out for the best, I think.

Thanks for everyone's support and good thoughts and prayers!

Linn

Yeah... been waiting for a report. As you know, BG, I don't PM any more with a request for an update on accounta the bad karma... >;-)

Good report. I'd give it a B+. "the nasty side effects of the prednisone" downgraded it from an A-... been there, done that, it's the pits!

Youse both take care of each other and make the next report even better!

Ts, Ps and love from me, g.

While Tom's not yet able to move back upstairs, he CAN go upstairs -- with supervision -- to the bathroom, though not for every call of nature. He's still camping out in the downstairs living area which is both his bedroom and bath. And that downstairs living area still has most of the seating moved out of it, no rugs that he can trip on (we don't have a real floor, just subflooring; sigh) and the table has a leaf dropped so he can maneuver the wheelchair around. And Tom's also still not trusting being able to step into the bathtub to have a shower (we have a shower chair), so he's still relying on downstairs sponge baths.

So life still has a way to go to regain what he had before he broke the ankle.

But his therapist told him this morning that he will probably graduate from therapy at the end of next week. From there on he's on his own.

Got an early phone call from Tom's dentist's office rescheduling his follow-up to a bit later this afternoon. That will interupt up the day in a much better place, so I actually got some stuff done this morning. (See the declutter thread.)

It will be good to get them tweaked. He discovered fairly soon on Monday (right after eating lunch) that there's an irritating spot on the lowers that needs to be fixed.
