Just a side not about the handle: moderators' policy here is to delete most posts by "guest." But many of us are cookieless for one reason or another, and just post consistently as "GUEST, Navy" or something like that. The mods generally respect this, as you are consistently identifying yourself. But if you can get a membership you will have access to all the cool stuff Susan mentioned.

Well, there are probably some people your age who like the same stuff - and have the same problem finding each other. No guarantee that we`ll know them but some might join old geezers like us here now and again.

There`s even young musicians making a living with old timey stuff. Have you heard of the Carolina Choclate Drops for instance?

Actually, I know what you mean about this youth thing, it can be a real problem. Our local folk club once got a feature about itself into the local newspaper. The next week the place was packed out with students from the nearby college. None of them ever came back, they just took one look and that was it. It wasn't that the quality was too awful, they just couldn't get their heads round the concept of homespun music I guess.

Guest, I had a son in that Navy (out now awhile). Come home safe. The older welcome-to-Mudcat 1-liner used to be, "Yer among yer own kind, now."

This site runs on software and architecture that predates "current" BB design because in its yoot, it pioneered online forum-type-places. Click around when you have plenty of time to get addicted, and you will find a lot of neat stuff stashed here, especially in the FAQ which has links to a lot of cool sh*t, and in the DT mentioned in the blue search box up top of the page.

Plenty of knowledgeable folks around here. Quite a few are sometimes snobby, some are sometimes snooty, and several are hipsters (is that a bad thing?)

Let's see I got the Bristol Sessions recently put out by Bear Records. Love the Johnson Brothers - Message from Carolina, I long to see my mother (ten thousand miles away) is amazing: "Near the banks of a lonely river, ten thousand miles away," have you heard anything more beautiful? Reason being I didn't go into detail is because, honestly, I'm not in to too many artists except for blues singers, Patton, Skip James, Sleepy John Estes, so on. But I know of a bunch of different, great songs from a bunch of artists whose name I can't always name. And that's because I listen to a lot of compilations put out by wonderful companies, dust to digital, yazoo, bear, document, etc if those ring any bells. I like the song "Police and High Sheriff come ridin down" by Ollis Martin (his only side). Basically, I got started on, of course, the Harry Smith Anthology and have basically just continued to listen to similar music. As for location I'm from West Virginia. Right now I'm on a ship in the Navy and will return to Newport News, VA. Before I left I wasn't into it like I am now, so I didn't seek too many people out in WVa.

Go to the next Bluegrass festival that you hear about.

Strictly, Bluegrass is a very narrowley-defined art form, but from a practical standpoint, the people who appreciate it are generally fans of all kinds of acoustic music. Festivals often offer music that is far from strict Bluegrass.

Old Country, Folk and early Jazz were all done with acoustic instruments.

A parking lot picking session may garner you a few friends.

Hi, Guest. Name some tracks/cuts. Name some names. That'd be faster than waltzing around the topic. I like some country, some western, some reggae, some mento, some blues, some cajun, some bluegrass, some jazz, some folk, some songwriter stuff, some hymns some--well, you get the idea. As Jack said, where are you? I can recall being 20 just 44 years ago. OK, so maybe recall is the wrong word, but I was 20 once, that I know.

Also, what instrument(s) do you play? Do you sing? Are you trained? (I wasn't trained by the age of 20. Hell, I'm barely housebroke now.) Tell us about yourself.

And the first person to respond to you is one of the nicest people who posts here. Sharp mind she has.

So I'm young, 20, and have found NO ONE who listens to this stuff. I got hooked on this old stuff, used to just be the Blues, now it's everything: country, folk, cajun, jazz, etc. Listening, trying to play and interpret as best as I can. But I've it's not just an age thing. Everyone either thinks they're just old scratchy records or some of the best stuff on this earth. I just don't know where to look for people who like this stuff. And I'm afraid that when I do they'll just be all snobby snooty and hipster.
