Can anyone give me some background on this song, which I've heard on a number of albums by various artistes, but never understood?

Wolfgang - Thanks for that.

You were right - it was very informative.

I just heard this song for the first time on the tape Big Mick sent me by the Black Family. Wonderful song, and I'm so happy to have this background on it.

Thanks, WW

Thanks for the definitive background on this song. I first learned it back in the '50s, I think, maybe earlier. I'm not sure where I first heard it -- perhaps Pete Seeger, or Odetta -- though I think it was on a record with some Spanish Civil War songs (Freiheit!, Viva la Quince Brigada, Los Cuatro Generales, etc.) The only note I have is "German concentration camp song -- political prisoners." Haven't heard the song for many years, so this thread and the information are much appreciated!
I closed this thread in an attempt to avoid splitting the discussion. Please post here (click) or in one of the related threads listed in the crosslinks toward the top of this page.
    Thanks.
