Hi Martin. Yes - like anyone who loved a good night out I remember The Star like it was yesterday. What a fabulous club and characters. I went on a few singers & guest nights but one night ended up being the guest as the " proper guest " failed to arrive ( can't remember who it was !! ). Since those days I've been in the John Wright Band ( with Maart ), Garva from Liverpool, Sara Grey & Ellie Ellis, Niamh Parsons, etc. and currently with Ildanach. I'd love to re-live some of those halcyon days. I can be contacted on 01744-607566.

I remember playing there in the early days with Tony Hill when we were with a band called Pikestaff.
Started to go again after a long spell living abroad up until it closed.
It was great aeeing Martin performing again and meeting up with my old mate Tony Hill again thanks to Martin, this time at the Edgerton.

Thanks Martin

Tony Easom

Hello Blindrunkal - who are you???
Harry Boardman played twice once on July 1st 1981 and again on Septmber 2nd 1983. John Cooper Clark turned up a few times, but never did a guest spot, I always remember his 'You'll Never See A Nipple In The Daily Express' good documentary about him on the box recently, he doesn't look any older. Please email me so i can send info about our concert mgittins@ntlworld.com Cheers!

my last memory of the Star dates from some time in the 70s - I think Harry Boardman was singing when I went for a pint to the bar, someone was trying to hide behind the barroom door - it was John Cooper Clark - he'd just signed a record deal with CBS, but wouldn't come in to the folk club because "they'll ask me to perform or summat"

I've got quite a few recordings of nights at the Star from 1982 to 1984. They were made with the permission of the guest on the night but include most of the floor singers that were on. They make an interesting listen. The list that I have is as follows:

Pete Smith & Jeanny Denny - May 12th 1982
Howard Bond -May 26th 1982
Black Edds – October 5th 83
Dick Miles – October 19th 83
Two Beggarmen – November 9th 83
Hollering Pot – December 7th 83
Steve Turner – January 25th 84
Martin Carthy – February 8th 84
Bram Taylor – February 15th 84
Gentleman Soldier – February 29th 84
Wits End – May 9th 84
Stanley Accrington – May 16th 84
Paul Downes – May 30th 84
Harry Ogden – June 6th 84

Ronnie the potman appears on most tapes urging everyone to drink up and go home. There was no running on past 11-00 till all hours and there's one tape where the guest ony had time for three songs in the second half before we had to finish!

I was also making recordings at the Unicorn in Manchester which was Harry Boardman's club. These were mainly singers nights but the quality of singers and residents made it like a concert every week. Very occasionally Harry would have a guest and I remember Sara Grey, Gorton Tank and the Village Band doing a full night as a guest or someone like Pete Coe, Malcolm Ramskill and Mick Heywood would pop in and do a longer set.

All good stuff!
Cheers
Mark

Fond memories of the Star, a one armed landlord who served hand pulled ale ! Rick Rubecki made my clogs, I still have them 30 odd years later, saw some good guests there are it was one of the places I cut my teeth performing. Nick Scaife

Did you play at The Legendary Star Inn Folk Club between January 1976 and January 1997?

From my (extensive) records I have identified no fewer than 170 solo artistes, 45 duos and 93 bands who guested there over 22 years. (not to mention the scores, possibly hundreds, who 'did a spot' and whose names were never recorded!)
My aim is to make contact with as many of them as possible, with a view to a reunion

Apart from being interested to hear from everyone I am organising a concert 'A NIGHT AT THE STAR' at St Boniface's Social Club in Broughton, on SATURDAY 20th OCTOBER 2012.*
Of course, it would be impossible to accommodate everyone on one night, and I'm hoping that, from those who come forward, there may be enough to stage a series of concerts over the coming months.
('A Night At The MSG' - a concert we organised last year - raised significant amounts of money and resulted in a great night of nostalgia, and produced a CD of performances and reminiscences from those who appeared on the night. - copies available))

SO: If you are one of the 300+ acts on my list, PLEASE GET IN TOUCH OR, if you know the whereabouts of ANY of the guests, please encourage THEM to do the same. I am happy to take calls on 07760 430 577 or receive messages on mgittins@ntlworld.com

As well as the guests, I want to collect any reminiscences about The Star from audience members and guests alike, with the intention of producing a booklet (as we did with the MSG)

THANKS, AND I LOOK FORWARD TO A GREAT RESPONSE!!

*The purpose of the concerts is to raise much-needed funds for my great nephew, who has a serious chest condition and is seeking treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Chicago.
