Hi Folks,

Ever been a bit puzzled as to what the younger generation is listening to these days? Think they're all listening to that rap crap?

Well my 18 year old daughter snuck up on me this evening and said "check this out dad" and so I did......and what can I say other than it is such gobsmackingly awesome playing.... that I thought it might be worth sharing wit der rest o' yez!

Now it might be old hat to some but its certainly new to me which got me wondering if anyone else knows of any clips out there on the 'Net that might fall into a similar category of gobsmacking awesomeness that they might want to share wit der rest o' us mortals.

A kid at my son's school prize-giving the other night gave us a guitar solo played almost entirely in this neck-smacking style. The first time you see it done it looks awesomely virtuosic; the third or fourth time, you find yourself thinking that perhaps it isn't quite as hard as it looks (and wondering where the tune's gone).

Not that I could do it for a big clock.

Imagine two forty minute sets of Percussive Guitar , even with a bit of vocal thrown in !!

Clever for ONE Number in a set , but not a lot more

It has become popular here, and as you said - one tune is interesting, but after that it begins to sound rather self-indulgent.

Sorry not impressed - I saw the late Eric Roche do something like this but he could also play interesting and musical pieces. Re flamenco - I have lessons with a guy who knocks spots of any other fingerstyle guitarist apart from any of the top flamenco players. His name is Steve Homes and is one of the top flamenco players in the UK

Not pertinent to this topic, but there is an internet site with nothing but Andalusian, flamenco.

Four channels are listed on the right, click on flamenco. They play some of the old stuff which can't be found on record anymore.

I also found percussive guitar to be boring after a couple of pieces.

Clever, but so what? Give me rap crap any day of the week. My gob remains unsmacked, & my soul entirely unawed. About as far away from my ideal of music as you could get, much less folk music...

Gordon Bok can play that style but seldom does.

His technique is undeniably outstanding, but for me, the technique takes precedence over the Music. Indeed, I didn't hear that much 'absolute Music'. With more than five decades of professional guitar playing behind me, I feel comfortably qualified to comment.

Not so, Bonzo! In the past couple of years I have seen some very good young local guitarists who play percussive guitar - one young bloke in particular. But at the ripe old age of 18 or 19 he feels he has gone as far as he wants to in this style and is now switching to bluegrass. Hopefully he will do well in whatever style he plays. He sometimes plays with a friend of his, a girl a couple of years younger, who is equally good at percussive guitar......they are truly amazing when playing together, and I enjoy watching them.

But that doesn't mean I enjoy a whole night of nothing but one style!

Yeah - it's genuine Folk Art rather than the establishment sort of art that gets the funding, although Banksy is a darling of the art-world & the skill of Rap as a vernacular often free-styled oral performance idiom trounces anything you'll find in literary circles these days. I'd say Rap is on a par with the veracular genius of Folk Song & Ballad - and it is, besides, natural born tradition at it's most feral & essential in terms of actual storytelling. It has very deep roots & is genuinely popular in the sense that folk song was once popular. Rap is also international - one of my favourites is Japanese hip-hop masters Dragon Ash whose beautifully folksy Shizukana hibi no Kaidan Wo provides a moving conclusion to Battle Royal:
