Subject: RE: SPENCER THE RODENT From: Rozza Date: 07 Jul 12 - 02:47 PM I've often wondered whether Spencer ended up at the "Cottage of Content" pub at West Melton, near Rotherham. Checked a few records but didn't find anything. I hope he did. Ruairidh |

Subject: Lyr Add: SPENCER THE RODENT (parody) From: Dennis the Elder Date: 02 Feb 13 - 03:12 PM Thought "Spencer the Rodent" was a good title for a song, so I amended the original accordingly. Some verses I hardly changed at all. Sang for the first, and probably last time at Wath Folk Club last Sunday, I think it needs more work. Any suggestions? SPENCER THE RODENT These words were composed for Spencer the Rodent Who nibbled around Markham and most parts of Wath. He had been so active, which caused an infestation And that was the reason he went on the road In Yorkshire, near Rotherham, he had been up to mischief Being weary of procreation, he sat down to rest At Old Moor, Dearne Valley, abstinence he considered But with bread and cold water he did himself, refresh It gave him the energy and he made up the time wasted More sweeter than beer, at the Cottage of Content But the thoughts of his puppies, lamenting their father Brought tears to his eyes, which made him lament The night fast approaching, to the woods he resorted With woodbine and ivy, his bed for to make There he dreamt about sighing, lamenting and crying Go home to your family, and philandering forsake On the fifth of November, he'd a reason to remember When first he arrived home, to his family and wife They stood so surprised, when first he arrived To behold such a stranger, once more in their sight His children came around him, with their old ratting stories With their old ratting stories to drive care away Now they are united, like birds of one feather Like bees in one hive, contented they'll stay So now he is a living, in his cottage contented With woodbine and roses, growing all around his door He's as happy as those who have thousands of riches Contented he'll stay and go a nibbling no more |
Subject: RE: Spencer the Rodent From: Jeri Date: 02 Feb 13 - 03:24 PM Not this one: These words weren't composed by Spencer the rodent For he is a rodent and he cannot write And I think this song will be shorter than long For I plan to catch him in my mouse trap tonight |
Subject: RE: Spencer the Rodent From: Dennis the Elder Date: 02 Feb 13 - 03:28 PM Thats why they were composed FOR Spencer the Rodent Jeri. He was clever, but not that clever. |
Subject: RE: Spencer the Rodent From: Tattie Bogle Date: 02 Feb 13 - 08:08 PM Sid Kipper does have a song called Spencer the Wild Rover, which is in the DT. It's a sort of cross between StR and Wild Rover. No rats in it though! So I guess Spencer the Rodent is just a poor warfarin stranger? |
Subject: RE: Spencer the Rodent From: Charley Noble Date: 02 Feb 13 - 10:40 PM Dennis- Excellent work. I love songs that fill in the gaps of our folk music repertoire. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Spencer the Rodent From: Dennis the Elder Date: 10 Feb 13 - 07:31 AM Thanks Charley for your encouragement. |
