Subject: Tune Add: JOHNNY'S GONE FOR A SOLDIER From: alison Date: 07 Nov 99 - 11:45 PM this is roughly the same tune as Solas uses, they call it "Johnny has gone for a soldier", (chorus still starts with "Shule agra").. If you'd rather hear the tune without the hassle of translating the red writing... try Mudcat MIDIs

Subject: Tune Add: SHULE AGRA From: alison Date: 06 Nov 99 - 11:56 PM this is the slower version of the tune (Solas does a faster more lively version... which I'll have a go at another time.) This is in 4/4 with 2 bars of 5/4 towards the end... not sure how MIDItxt will cope....

Subject: Lyr Add: MICKEY'S GONE FOR A LABORER From: Liam's Brother Date: 20 Oct 99 - 03:14 PM MICKEY'S GONE FOR A LABORER
Being out of work it was no fun, so I went down and bought The Sun
Having new work my heart was free so I resolved to have a spree,
Soon after this an order was seen to leave the city by the evening train.
After being out a little time we arrived at a place they called their line
This was more than I could bear. The very idea of it did me scare.
Says I to the General, "If you want earthworks made, I'm the broth of a boy for that's my trade. This is a song from Col. John O'Neill's Fenian invasion of Canada in May, 1866. It comes from a period broadside. The idea was to establish a Fenian Republic in Canada and to barter that for Irish freedom. Dick Greenhaus and I are very interested in songs from this chapter of Irish-American-Canadian history. If you have any others, please let us know. Thanks.
All the best, |
