Subject: Recognition for Fylde Hero Ron Baxter
From: GUEST,Blandiver

For Lancastrian Folkies & Fylde Festival goers alike the name Ron Baxter will evoke a plethora of adjectives with respect of his general good eggery: robust, stout, wholesome, earnest, traditional, erudite etc. etc. A fine singer, great songwriter, a master o' the maritime, artist, perenial MC, singaround host par excellence, Ron is the very heart and soul of his native Fleetwood, without whom the place just wouldn't be the same. For he's a jolly good fellow, and so say all of us. Indeed.

Anyway, today whilst looking over the all-new Marine Hall gardens we were delighted to see that Ron has been immortalised in a portrait... at least, such is the exacting likeness it simply can't be mere chance. So all you Cod Heads, Fylde goers, Ron Baxter fans & admirers out there, be sure to go have a look for yourselves next time you're passing.

For those who simple can't wait:

It's either a portrait of Neptune or Ron Baxter, for sure.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Is it a portrait of Ron as Neptune, or Neptune as Ron? It's hard to say. I reckon Neptune could look like Ron, but if this is accidental the likeness is uncanny. And we spot this, BTW, on the day Rachel & I start working on Ron's new Pendle songs...

Of course, if you flip it 180 degrees, it's still Ron!!

Ron Baxter, without a doubt. I haven't seen him for years but this is just as I remember him. How're you doing Ron?

Blandiver-

Ah, a clue to who you are! My best to Rachel.

Well, Ron certainly has done a lot to earn such immortalization. Is this artwork vertical or horizontal, or does it rotate?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

It's horizontal - part of a big wheel of maritime themed images so Ron is quite at home! I'll get a bigger pic next time I'm over that way. Ron popped in earlier for a cuppa, blether, and lengthy debate on Lancastrian witchcraft (as we do!) so I was able to show him the pic. Even he was amazed at the likeness - and, no doubt, delighted.

Rachel says hi!

Ron is a talented man. His art work is wonderfl, and he should really have made a living at that in an ideal world. He can also write convincing song lyrics, and clever interpretations of song themes often to existing tunes. Ron also has a strong Christian Faith which has sustained him over the years. Ron is not an idiot when it comes to spotting talent on the Folk Scene. A number of times he has mentioned a name new to most of us who has gone on to great things,
Ron has not had an easy life by any means but always has a kind and cheerful word to say, and spares the time to talk to you whatever the circumstance of your meeting. You will find him in the Steamer pub in Fleetwood most nights, so drop in and say hallo

Nick-

"You will find him in the Steamer pub in Fleetwood most nights, so drop in and say hallo"

Does Ron still keep his "office" there? The music sessions have shifted, I thought, to another pub.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

If ever I need Ron, I can usually find him in his office at the Steamer where he does his meticulous pen & ink drawings of maritime import & other subjects. His informal 'beer mat' sketches are the stuff of legend & folklore - John 'Harmonium Hero' Kelly's recent CD 'Honour & Promotion' features one on the cover, as does Neil Brook's facebook page. I've got several on the kitchen wall, my favourite being the one he did of Bogie's Bonny Belle in the time it took me to sing it one night a few years back at the Fleetwood Folk Club.

It is considered an honour when Ron does your portrait. Here's mine from a few years ago, albeit slightly touched up:

Blandiver-

That's a keeper.

We used to have a cartoonist who would sit in at our weekly meetings when I was helping run an alternative energy demonstration house back in my university days. As discussions ensued a piece of paper would begin to circulate, reducing people to giggles, as a cartoon representation of our latest topic was graphically depicted. Too bad I didn't keep a folder of them. I'll never forget "Thermal imaging of the R-value of a bedroom wall."

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Wonder why? Here it is again....

Neptune as Ron / Ron as Neptune. Marine Hall Gardens, Fleetwood, Lancashire, UK

*

Whilst we're on, I requested that Ron gave us his masterpiece Morecambe as part of our Poems & Ballads sessions at the Fylde Festival last Saturday morning and naturally it went down a storm. It has its own thread here on Mudcat, and if there ever was a work of perfect genius, this is it...

Lyr Add: Who'll Go To Morecambe? /The Last Resort

Ron has at least one of this songs in the Digital Tradition too:

Who's Going to Pay Paddy Doyle?

Ross brought 'Morecombe' to Sydney a few years ago, I'd forgotten it, thanks for the reminder

See the OP for a small measure of his CV. I've personally seen him control a singaround of 70 desperate egos, which was heroic enough for me.
