Subject: Obit: Lol Coxhill From: GUEST,Blandiver Date: 10 Jul 12 - 07:36 AM Just heard that English saxophone legend has passed a couple of months short of his 80th birthday. A mainstay of the principle of humility in music, Lol was beloved of many & contributed to projects by musicians as diverse as Shirley Collins, The Damned, Kevin Ayers & a host of others as well as ploughing his unique furrow as a solo soprano improviser with a uniquely melodic touch, warmth & sense of humour. 'A true national treasure and a top geezer.' - John Lewis, Time Out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRbQxLQg5FI |
Subject: RE: Obit: Lol Coxhill From: Dave Sutherland Date: 10 Jul 12 - 07:42 AM Sorry to hear this - he was an absolute original. RIP |
Subject: RE: Obit: Lol Coxhill From: Brian Peters Date: 10 Jul 12 - 08:20 AM Loved his work with Ayers, and would sometimes see him wandering down Tottenham Court Road, weaving melodies on his soprano and seemingly oblivious to the rest of the world. A sad loss. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Lol Coxhill From: GUEST,Smokey Chillum Date: 10 Jul 12 - 08:36 AM I remember his name credited on all kinds of LPs and gigs back in the 1970s. But what kind of sadistic parents would christen their child "Laugh Out Loud" Perhaps that's why he gravitated towards the Avant-garde ? |
Subject: RE: Obit: Lol Coxhill From: fat B****rd Date: 10 Jul 12 - 09:07 AM I have his book "The Bald Soprano". A true one-off. In the mid-sixties he played tenor sax in Londoin soull bnads. When he played Grimsby Mecca with "The Gass" we had a brief chat. Nice man. RIP Lol. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Lol Coxhill From: SteveMansfield Date: 10 Jul 12 - 10:11 AM I was on the same bill as him a few times in the early 80s and he was always unassuming and friendly, whilst playing up a storm of angular improvisatory music when on stage; I'm sorry to hear of his death. I'd not heard of his book, I must seek it out. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Lol Coxhill From: MoorleyMan Date: 10 Jul 12 - 10:35 AM Sorry to hear - another true original gone. I too remember his work with Kevin Ayers & The WholeWorld. Lol wasn't just a brilliant sax player tho'. His iconic Ear Of Beholder LP was reissued last year - twas a fine, if at times distinctly weird, set, well worth checking out if you're curious. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Lol Coxhill From: GUEST,grumpy Date: 10 Jul 12 - 11:16 AM Oh, that's a shame! One of my favourite albums remains Miller/Coxhill-Coxhill/Miller. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Lol Coxhill From: Judy Dyble Date: 10 Jul 12 - 11:41 AM His name was Lowen and he was a lovely man. I was part of a short-lived band with Lol and Steve and Phil Miller, as (would you believe) Dyble Coxhill and the Miller Brothers or DC and the MBs for slightly short. We did a small tour of the Netherlands and some university gigs and then went our separate ways, but in that short time I learned a huge amount about freeform improvisation and learned to love it immensely. I had an email from him suggesting we work together again last year, but sadly it didn't happen... RIP Lol You were unique |
Subject: RE: Obit: Lol Coxhill From: Spleen Cringe Date: 10 Jul 12 - 12:10 PM Wow - are there any recordings of that band, Judy? Sounds fabulous! I only got to see LC play live once - it was back in the 80s when I saw him playing a solo set supporting Vi Subversia of the Poison Girls. It was a brillinat night - one of those gigs that stays with you. I like the fact that he cropped up in all sorts of unexpected places, like on this track by Welwyn Garden City's top anarcho-hippy band, The Astronauts: Books: The Astronauts featuring Lol Coxhill |
Subject: RE: Obit: Lol Coxhill From: Phil Edwards Date: 10 Jul 12 - 12:16 PM 79 isn't bad, but it's always sad to lose one of the good ones. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Lol Coxhill From: GUEST,Blandiver Date: 10 Jul 12 - 12:53 PM I too remember his work with Kevin Ayers & The WholeWorld. Let's have some of that, eh? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUvG5-UB7_0 Featuring Dave Bedford on accordion & Mike Oldfield on bass, and Lol Coxhill playing at his sweetest. Lovely bloke; I was honoured with playing with him on two occasions at least & for years afterwards we'd always stop & chew the fat whenever our paths crossed, usually in Honest John's. One of my favourite albums remains Miller/Coxhill-Coxhill/Miller. Mine too, but it's Fleas in Custard for afters tonight. |
Subject: RE: Obit: saxophone legend Lol Coxhill (1932-2012) From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 11 Jul 12 - 06:51 AM Often saw him busking outside the Festival Hall in London. Another jazz legend of my youth now gone. RtS |
Subject: RE: Obit: saxophone legend Lol Coxhill (1932-2012) From: greg stephens Date: 11 Jul 12 - 12:51 PM Lol was a true original. One of my all time favourite records is the LP he made with the radical outdoor theatre company Welfare State International. They were pioneering many forms of street and processional music with various guest musical directors in the 70's; among these were Lol (weirdo jazz), along with Mike Westbrook (more conventional jazz) and myself(rough folkie). Lol wrote simple tunes for street musicians, and was a great man for sitting in a field and playing the sax in a quite extraordinary way. It was a privilege to join with Lol and Mike and others to be a part of that wildly innovative world. Lol kept a flow of ideas coming over a vast period of time, a wildly imaginative and productive musician. It was great that he was around, and a shame that he is gone. |

Subject: Obit: Lol Coxhill From: GUEST, topsie Date: 31 Jul 12 - 06:50 PM I just tuned my radio to BBC Radio 3 and heard that 'Late Junction' this evening will include a tribute to Lol Coxhill, who passed away earlier this month. This is the first time I had heard of his death, and a Mudcat search, while revealing that he had several Mudcat fans, does not seem to have mentioned it. Perhaps someone will provide a suitable tribute. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Lol Coxhill From: GUEST, topsie Date: 31 Jul 12 - 07:12 PM Thank you. I wonder why nothing came up when I did a forum search. Does the search just check the messages themselves, and not the thread title? |
Subject: RE: Obit: Lol Coxhill From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 31 Jul 12 - 07:32 PM Depends how you search. If you use the search Forum (top left), that depends on an index and the index hasn't been updated for some (fairly long) time, so you won't find anything recent. I remembered the thread and just used the Filter on Coxhill with the Age drop-down set to 30 days (overkill!) and up it came. This is one of the best (and quickest) ways to find things if you know some text that's likely to be in the thread title (Filter only checks the titles). Otherwise you can use google and add site:www.mudcat.org to the search parameters. Mick |
Subject: RE: Obit: saxophone legend Lol Coxhill (1932-2012) From: GUEST, topsie Date: 02 Aug 12 - 04:56 AM Thank you for moving me to the correct thread. Of course I COULD have set the 'Refresh' to 30 days, or searched for it on Google, but I didn't know I needed to. A Forum search produced messages about Lol Coxhill (I did it twice, just to be sure), so I assumed that I had done the search properly and that there were no recent messages. |
