Subject: BS: Son of Where's Micca??!
From: ClaireBear
Date: 13 Jul 12 - 11:06 AM

Many old friends, I among them, are gathering next weekend to cook a splendid meal or two together -- something we used to do regularly when we all lived in Berkeley years ago. We called it "The Friday Night Supper Club," and it was always great food, typically great fun, and often great music.

Now we're spread out across the country, and we're all foodies of one sort or another, but there's not a wine expert among us. That's unthinkable in Sonoma County, where we're gathering. Who you gonna call? Micca, of course!

Micca arrives for his very first California visit on Tuesday! We'll spend Wednesday working our way up the coast to Sonoma County; Thursday and Friday in wineries getting, um, educated on the local vintages; and Saturday and Sunday cooking, eating and drinking the fruits of our labors (and quite likely making music, as well). And then another week or so recovering...

I'll let you know how it goes as we proceed.

Cheers,
Claire

Make sure you provide lots of devilled eggs - Micca's favorite!

Micca touring vinyards Oh Dear!

Have fun, Claire, and send him on in reasonably good condition.

Why do I suspect that I am not hearing the whole story about the deviled eggs?

I am starting him off with my homemade lasagne, SINS, because he speaks so fondly of the version your local joint provides. There's toast and marmalade planned for the next morning. Beyond that I cannot say at present.

Ask Micca.
Amato's makes a meat lasagna and drowns it in meat sauce - huge portions and a Micca favorite.

Say, maybe it's appropriate to sing a song for Micca's arrival in California:
Oh, if you ain't got the do re mi, friend, you ain't got the do re mi
You better get back to beautiful Texas,
    Oklahoma, Kansas, Georgia, Tennessee
California is a garden of Eden, a paradise to live in or see
But believe it or not, you won't find it so hot
If you ain't got the do re mi

Welcome to California, Micca. I'm looking forward to seeing you. I'll buy lunch.

-Joe-

Well, I am still in London, but starting to gather my travel accoutrements together, charge batteries, keep Wugsie out of my clean clothes (and suitcase), trying to find essential bits of kit, (mobile charging lead) etc, I havent used any of my extensive collection of swearwords yet, YET!!! but the time is coming!! all to a soundtrack of the First Night of the Proms! essential washing is in the drier, (at least this time I am going to wash new socks before wearing them!!) all ready for Heathrow terminal 3 and Air Canada on Tuesday morning and a 10+ hour flight to Vancouver, then 2+ to San Fran, and the Joys of Homeland Security!! More later as I know what is happening. I will put pics on Fb when I can, and a link from here to my photo page also, if I can get on line somewhere with my trusty laptop!!
More later

Lay in a good supply of French Vanilla coffee and he'll be happy, too. And DO NOT feed him eggs under any circumstances! Or at least not in enclosed spaces where there may be open flames present. You've been warned.

Frankly, I am offended by the title of this thread. It's so sexist. Why does it have to be son of Where's Micca? Do you know how many wimmin there are in this world? How about "Where's Micca's dottir?" eh??? (Hey, he sailed the Seven Seas, it coulda happened,,,somewhere, some litte Miccaette is wondering about her sperm donor! Think about it. Uppity Wemoon Unite!):-)

Oh, yeah, and have a wonderful, safe trip, Miccaluv,

Another definite NO on the feeding - unless you wish to visit your local hospital - is FISH as he is very allergic to it.

When we were ordering for Firecat's wedding reception we ordered a buffet for 40, 5 vegetarians and NO fish. Mind you Adam's allergic to it too :-)

We are all tucked into our beds for the night ... adventures ended until morning. I hope Micca is enjoying his specially decorated cabin. I also hope the skunk who lives underneath it doesn't choose tonight to do something rash. Tomorrow we're off to have lunch and a tramp through Muir Woods with Dave Swan. Then we continue north to Sonoma County for a few days of exploring wineries and cooking with friends. Cheerio!

Mary, I am NOT missing the Olympics, not one bit!!! I am not present in the same city wich is not the same thing at all! after an arduous day of wine tasting, we are relaxing for a while, anyway the story so far, Yesterday,a leisurely breakfast in the garden watching hummingbirds feeding while I ate toast and marmalade and drank tea, then a journey north long to coast road to SF and across the Golden Gate bridge to the Pelican inn that looks like it belongs in Devon, both inside and out to meet El Swanno for Lunch, which was very enjoyable,I now only have 'Spaw to meet and I will have met all the layabouts at large!!!, Dave is a real nice guy and we had a nice chat,it was pleasure to meet him and add him to my list of "Mudcatters met", we then pressed on to Sebastopol where we are now established, at friends,
We spent the day today winetasting at verious wineries including the famous Iron Horse Champagne producing House, and had lunch at the Korbel winerythen back for a nap, its a hard job but someone has to do it, and few would do it as well or enjoy it as much as I am doing on all your behalf, I will put a few pics up when I get a chance and add more to this account later

Hi,

So that's what the bridge looks like when you're on the main road. A different perspective from bicycling along the sides. Then again, when I was there last year, most of the time you couldn't see one end of the bridge from the other because of the fog. I didn't know any better than that pictures of flying in over the bridge were impossible. Look at it: You even have the shadows of the towers stretching
<does some mental flying and turning about>
in, over the waters of the bay!

Anyway, keep having fun,

Micca provided "proper tea" (PG Tips). We are, for the moment, replete. More later.

The Pelican is a short (USA short) way north of the Golden Gate bridge!! we are preparing for the Feast and people are playing music and singing! and the temp outside on the deck is about 95-100 degs, and the sky is an impossible shade of cerulan blue, last night we all sat out on the deck and watched the stars until it got too cold!! I am (thanks for asking) having a lovely time with Claires friends who are delightful, and tasting wines and food and music, and just kicking back! the way, in fact ,to spend a summer Saturday afternoon.

Sins...maybe on the sign.

Last time I was there (when my sister was still living in San Leandro), we stopped at The Pelican. There was a convocation of T-series MGs in the parking lot (and crowds of MG owners in the dining room). We'd planned on lunch, but gave it a miss because it was too crowded. Did get to compare notes with some MG owners and piss and moan about not owning one anymore and having to sell the MGs to bail my ex out of whatever financial hassle he was in at the time, etcet etcet.

I fantasize about heading to the Pelican Inn in a 1954 MG-TF...deep sigh...

We have a Fry's here in the Fort Worth area, you usually need to hunt down sales staff (they have enough, they're just very busy). Someone told me Fry's changed the way they pay their folks, commission sales, so they're probably all scrambling more. Too bad, it worked the way it was set up before and was more fair.

So when are you coming to Texas, Micca? It cools down by October. :)

Oh, gawd...United. Last time I flew United we ended up leaving Oakland at the same time we should have been landing at O'Hare. I HATE O'Hare...and had to spend 6+ hours there while United moved the boarding gate several times. Didn't help that I was broke enough not to be able to afford sustenance and neither of my next two flights back to Manchester, NH served anything more filling than mixed nuts.

Good luck, Micca!

BTW, if you check the declutter thread, you'll find what I've been dealing with for the past week and a half. I'm just hoping the facial and arm rash (and everywhere else, too, alas; just not visible) will have other shoppers at the grocery store later figuring I'm contagious and will keep out of my way (so I don't have to kill them). I REALLY wish Tom were more mobile so I could drive him to the store. Actually, I REALLY REALLY wish he could see to drive as well.

This too will pass (the rash and Tom's mobility problem, at least).

So Micca got another flight that leaves at 8:30am from SFO, stops in Denver, and then flies through to Boston to land at 8:21pm. The flight number is 460, in case anyone wants to check the flight status later on.

He has checked baggage, so by the time he retrieves it he will be taking the 9:35pm Concord Coach Lines bus, which arrives in Portland at 12:10am.

Sorry, everybody! I wish I could have gotten him there on time, but we had the flat in the absolute middle of nowhere, and the lug nuts wouldn't budges, and the tow truck and taxi I called both had trouble finding us -- in fact, the taxi ultimately refused to come find us. My fault; I thought I'd taken a different exit than the one I took. (It can be hard to read the road sign in the dark at 4am on 3 hours' sleep when you've suddenly lost a tire on the highway.) Mercury is, after all, in retrograde. I regret the inconvenience for whoever ends up having to go gnome hunting, and will try to make it up to you later on...at the Getaway, say.

WELL the good/bad?news is I am in Denver Co and it is 90degs F!! luckily ,the Airport lounge has A/c. and I am reasonably comfortable, qith WiFi and a short, 2 hour wait for the onward flight to Boston, Claire is the ideal copmpanion in adversity!! and I always wanted to watch the moonset in California, I didnt Quite have by a roadside waiting for a Tow truck from The AA in mind!!, WE Couldnt budge the Lugnuts (Torque wrench or airline applied by Garage ,no doubt) but we got to the desk about 5 mins before the flioght left so it was no go, but in fairness Uniteds Deskstaff were Very helpful and frieendly and checked me in right away for another flight leaving only 2 hours later! unfortunately with a 2 hour stop in Denver. So for Tams, here is the inside straight, Dep Denver 2.24pm arr Bos 8.21pm will get the first Concord Trailways I can which I suspect Claires research is right and it will be the 9.35, (But where will I find a woman carrying a guitar to complete the recognition criterion?) I'm still astounded that the gentleman that I said "excuse me, but have you seen a gnome and a Scottish woman?" to never batted an eye when asked, but merely asked me if she was carrying a guitar and then said yes, you'd gotten off at the other bus station.

And I agree with katlaughing, when Fate gets in your way, there's always a reason, better to go with it.

Right. Roaming gnome has been fetched without incident from the bus station, he's been to my place to say hello to J-boy and meet Kaylee the Ninja Cat (where he left his cap) and he's been safely stowed at Mary's. I'll see him in the AM for breakfast, provided he doesn't speak to Mary.

What mMary omitted to mention was the "odd sparkling wine" was a frizzante called "il Fagetto" is there a message here I wonder? it tasted slightly "cheezy" nyway after a splendid evening of bringing up to date, laughing (a lot of this) and drinking wine, I am at least partway recovered and am getting used to the humidity and heat here,I had a nice trip with Jacquie into Portland Old Port this afternoon to visit my friend Jacques at one of my Fave wine shops and now we are off to eat!!

Lazy day here. We went TJ Hooker's for steaks last night with wine. Then came home to wine. I managed to shatter a wine glass in the middle of the night while trying to get Freddie in. I hoovered up the glass but lost interest in cleaning - it is too damn hot and sticky. Hope Dean and Judy are near-sighted.

So we are lazing around debating about lunch.

I really may have to move to Alaska if this is what Maine is to be.

One side effect of Micca's visit is a huge amount of things left in odd places. I awoke around 3AM to let Freddie in and managed to brush a glass of a desk. It shattered. I swept and vacuumed - at 3AM and still managed to get glass in my foot.
Should have left a light on for me.

Micca, finally home from my time on the beach with a group of teens.... my purse was stolen during the weekend so it'll be a few days before I get one of our old phones back in service. The purse was turnt in but the two phones (both just upgraded) and my camera are gone gone gone... I'll message you when I have a phone again.
Perhaps you were right about it being an unwise idea.... but I must say tenting on the beach was great fun under a full moon.

I love Beccas description of "Tourists from Mass" and the sun setting in the East??? well, I can't say I have seen that one, I suppose there are places on this coast where you can see it set over the water? I used to manage a Kennebunkport shop (a year-round shop, to boot) with the tourist information bureau on the back porch (overlooking the river). I used to keep one ear cocked out there to hear the stupid stuff tourists say.

And they REALLY don't understand tides. Comments about the Basin at low tide, "They sure must use a lot of water in this town." And overheard when I crossed the bridge to the Clam Shack, "Isn't it nice how they park all the boats pointed in the same direction?"

One person came into the information bureau all upset because the waves weren't high enough. Somebody should turn them up...

And more times than I care to think about, "It's low tide now. When should we come back next summer for it to be high tide?"

You can't get to heaven if you're hit by a tourist... (or a "summer complaint").

Hey, Micca-me-love, just dashing by to say we can't wait to see you Wednesday AND Hunt has offered to drive you back to the bus station on Saturday- I didn't even have to ask him!

So now there remains just one minor dilemma to sort out:
The local church is having its annual Old Home Week Ham and Bean supper. Would you like that, or shall Hunt show off his newly acquired gourmet cooking skills (believe me, the man can cook!). Hmmm, ham n' beans or gourmet dinner? Decisions, decisions!

Meanwhile, if you are up early enough in the mornings, you will hear OUR local loon demonstrating how they got that name (hint: it isn't from the mystical call heard across the foggy morning pond. It's the territorial yodel done in midair).

Also, if you're very good we'll let you come to the kid's "Songs of Woody Guthrie' concert we are doing on Friday! You can demonstrate "Bling, blang, hammer with my hammer".
...I'll just leave that there and slip away for now...

No visits to wineries, no shanty sings, just bird-watching on the porch and errand runs to Keene (he said something about " fat quarters"-I don't think it was a rude allusion to my weight...!).

Tonight he gets to be the only adult at a children's concert we are giving, then tomorrow we must bid him farewell, as he hies him hence to more adventures!

Gave myself a dope slap upside the head yesterday afternoon for not thinking of it sooner and gave Animaterra a holler last night when we got home from the Press Room session.

I'm heading out of here in a couple hours to pick up Micca in Concord, saving him a bus trip to Boston and then another bus trip back to Portsmouth -- the only public transportation way to get from west to east in southern New Hampshire. (The state makes sure everything funnels tourists IN, to hell with travel across the state -- Maine is pretty much the same.)

It'll be great to be able to visit at home (and luncheon BLTs with fresh native tomatoes!) for awhile before the Press Room sea music sing this afternoon. Conversation is almost impossible at The Press Room...

Picked Micca up in Concord just moments after he was deposited there and I showed him it was, indeed, possible to go from Concord to Nottingham (and hence to Portsmouth) without detouring to North Conway.

Micca added to his fan club at the Press Room sea music singaround and then was safely handed over to Sinsull and Jacqui for transport back to Maine.

Really glad he and I and Tom were able to spend some good conversational time together before the Press Room where conversation is problematic at best.

(Many thanks Linn) Linn arived to pick me up so soon after I was dropped off I had just time to get a coffee! after a nice few hours at Their place in Nottingham ( I wish there was an election sign for a Sherriff there , Think How cool it would be to have a sign saying "Joe Bloggs for Sherriff of Nottingham") We got to The Press Room, where we had a really good afternoon of singing and music with a lot of friends, ( I even remembered names!!!) and some Outstanding singing as well, I wouldn't want to single any person out for special praise as all were excellent but the girls of "London Julie" were amazing!! So Thank you Justine, Ramona and Carol!! oh and Sue!!!! It was great to meet you all again!.
I am now back in Maine and getting Laundry done and stuff ready to travel on Home on Wednesday, after nearly 5 weeks of amazing places and wonderful friends who have ,as always, been THE BEST , and made me feel welcome and cared for, and looked after me so well, So I say a Big thank you to all my Hosts and Hostesses who have made this such a completely memorable trip, Claire, Kalia, Mary, Allison&Hunt and Maggie, Linn, Mary again and all the people who have taken time to show me things and on visits, I THANK YOU all most sincerely!

Breakfast at Tim Horton's and then down to Spring Point to view the ospreys up close and personal. Micca got lots of pictures of mama guarding her nest but the bablies were off doing what teenagers evreywhere do - hanging out.
We spent a couple of hours at the waterfront watching sailing ships go by, witnessed a tug boat race and a raft of ducks, a cormorand along with many dogs chasing balls. Nice relaxing time. Now home waiting for the sunburn to start hurting.

Micca, Jeri came over yesterday evening for supper (on the deck!!! which I'd finally gotten around to spiffifying Sunday morning prior to that day's company -- it was a busy weekend) and we shared the bottle of Sterling pinot grigio (excellent!) which you picked up at our local state store.

Mike Gibsons hip flask full of Port and Brandy was MIGHTY, held a litre!!there was some wonderful harmony singing as usual! a very different sing from a week ago at the Press Room, but very satisfying! Many thanks to Lizzie and Mike for their hospitality and the opportunity to mend some fences and renew a long standing friendship!

What can I write about the Getaway? singing and Mummers, friendship and Max as an Egyptian Princess! everyone being on voice, and one of the most MAGIC moments ever, when, after the Sunday evening concert a very respected singer came over and apologised for not singing a song I had asked for earlier in the w/e then said, "I will sing it for you now" and started, and as she sang others around joined in on the chorouses singing harmonies, until there was about 10 altogether singing "Tenting tonight" creating a perfect and Magical few moments !! Rap, I was NOT passed out in the carpark, I was checking the underside of the car for explosive devices (well, thats my story and I am sticking to it) after a very interesting journey , during which Abby Sale and I regaled our companions(Amos and Dani) with renditions of songs that we could have sung at the Politically In correct songs workshop!!!! we arrived in Hillsborough NC and after a good nights rest started preps for dinner, Amos and I , while Dani was at work, The evening in Danis dining room, with Dani, Elaine, David, Janie, Amos, and myself with good wine and good food, was magical, and will live in my mery, ebven beaming Dani's other daughter in by Skype and her asking me to sing the Gladiator for her was special, then later Chance and Suzette arrived, so that we could continue my Great Adventure today.
, we sat on Dani's porch and sang songs and listened to wonderful playing, Amos did a couple of really striking and DEEP numbers, wonderful!!
after a day travelling and a good dinner, I am now ensconced in my room at the Riverview hotel in Charleston NC and we are going out tomorrow to see the sights, maybe to Fort Sumpter!.
I know I have special friends here, but this few days , the Getaway, and since, has underlined just HOW special they are!!

I was very impressed to stand on such a place! we are now back for abreather before going to seek food later, If I was a Fish eater I could have a Field Day here, they have sea food I have never even heard of!! it is a very beautiful City also, Not hardly any Highrises, I think our hotel, which is otside the downtown Charleston is possibly one of the tallest at 15 floors most of downtown seems to be 3-5 Max, it is full of trees, Palm, Palmetto, and lots beside, and many things still in bloom, I will put pics on either Flickr , with a link here or Fb (The WiFi in the Hotel is a bit slow, so it might have to wait until I reach somewhere a bit quicker)

Did you go to the slave museum in downtown Charleston? Powerful.

I, most strongly deny, and repudiate any suggestion that I was involved , associated or the cause of the Earthquake!!! I was elsewhere and I have witnesses!! And the raw onion and eggs were purely accidental!!
On The other hand I am ensconced very comfortably at Celtaddicts (good food, wine and great companywhat more could you want?) and spent yesterday at Mystic Seaport!! looking at Ships!! Well!! have arrived safe at Marys, Home Port! after an INCREDIBLE trip that has, again, renewed my faith in the Magic of the Mudcat, without which none of it would have happened. No Getaway, No Friends to visit here in the US ,None of it!! So Thanks Max!,
We Left Celtaddicts in CT yesterday late morning and set off for Portsmouth for the Press Room and got there about 4 pm to a great welcome, it seems Linn HAD met Janet before!! (which we knew already but she didnt remember) and had a Brill session with some very moving songs including a Superb rendition of "North West Passage" and some fun songs too, it was Greeat to "Re-meet" the Portsmouth, and the Plan is to go for the Shanty sing today as well! How about that for an "embarassement of riches"?
What more could you ask for, a week that included a Folk Festival,a n evening with Severn, a long train Journey, Fall colours, boats and ships to climb aroumd on and inspect, a sing on an old Whaling ship that is being rebuilt, a trip on a schooner on the Connecticut under sail, then a sing at the Press Room with lots of friends, and then to arrive "home", I will write more when I stop fizzing!

Too tired to stay awake and greet the travellers. But we had breakfast at Uncle Andy's and they are headed south to Portsmouth while I take care of things here. Then dinner at TRUBRIT's.
I too couldn't place janet until she walked in the door. Senility, I think.

I have been too busy for a while to post on Mudcat - been away so long I had to reset my cookie. Micca had a whirlwind visit to Virginia but assuredly he will be back because there is so much to see! Of course he had to be dragged kicking and screaming to my winery gig (NOT!) which was in a beautiful setting in the foothills of the Blue Ridge. He tasted all the wines once then had to go for another tasting so he could pick out a favorite! I didn't know he was an American Civil War buff so next time we'll organize visits to the battle sites.

Tom outdid himself last night with curries, Indian veggies, fragrant rice, and something else - going blank. Deborah ended the meal with her orange poundcake glazed with marmalade. Lots of stories from the gentlemen. Lots of wine and good company. A really wonderful evening.

Good to read, Mary. I was wondering if there were survivors. Sounds like y'all had a great time!
