There was a Benefit Concert on 23rd Sept 1964 at The Hollywood Bowl
which may be heard at http://current.com/149cckc

Hedy West performs with Joe & Eddie, Dillards,Theodore Bikel. The Gray Singers, The Modern Folk Quartet, Pete Seeger (with Ramblin" Jack Elliot), and Joan Baez

Hedy is on second and sings the following song which I don't recognise. Did Hedy write this one, or is there an older source ?

HUBBARD

Oh Hubbard, Oh Hubbard, you served me wrong
You kept me a-loving these eight years long
You kept me a-loving in anguish and pain
I hope I'll be hanged if I ever love again

When these young men first begin to love
It's nothing but your honey and your little turtle dove
When you're married it's no such a thing
Get up and make the bed you big lazy thing

When I was single I lived at my ease
Now I'm married I've got a husband to please
And two young children to maintain
Oh how I wish I was single again

One cries Ma I wanna piece of bread
Another cries Ma I wanna go to bed
I wash 'em, dress 'em and put 'em all to bed
Before their father cusses and wishes they's dead

repeat first verse

GMGough. As the world's original all time 100% dyed in the wool straight from the wood Hedy West nut, many heartfelt thanks for drawing that concert to my attention.

Unfortunately, I don't recognise the song at all, although I'd say it's almost certainly traditional. I'll have a root around and if anything jogs the memory cells, I'll report back.

Hubbard is one of two tracks deleted on the Japanese CD reissue.
The Good news is ACE Records (UK) will release HEDY WEST and
HEDY WEST Vol.2 on one CD, with 2 EXTRA tracks (alaternate COTTON MILL GIRLS, WHOSE GONNA SHOE YOUR PRETTY LITTLE FEET).
Scheduled for July 30 release.

Thomas.

From interest ~~ why - or who - Hubbard? I mean, you would expect such a torch-type song to apostrophise the faithless lover by his forename; isn't that the usual form? But Hubbard is surely a surname, as in Old Mother or L Ron [can it be altogether pure coincidence BTW, two Scientology threads simultaneously ongoing?!]. But does anyone actually know anybody with Hubbard as a forename or Christian name?

My mind immediately says "Hiram Hubbard"... sung by Jean Ritchie and others.

Well, I vaguely recall that song, and it never seemed to me that "Hubbard" was of necessity a last name. There are many examples of "front" names being interchangeable with "back" names, my own family name, Clayton, being a good example. I had a classmate years ago named Clayton Shank, so when someone shouted, "Clayton!" on the playground, we'd each respond, "What?"

So, in the tradition of Bascom Lunsford, I'll just say it's a country way of naming, and it could easily have been the MCP's first name. For that matter, some folk are just known in their community by one name, and it can be the first or last, it don't much matter. So another possibility pops up, right there.

We're not likely to ever learn, either.

Bob
