Subject: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Jul 12 - 02:03 PM The monthly sea shanty, forebitter, and ballad session will take place this Saturday, July 21st, at The Press Room on Daniel Street, Portsmouth, New Hampshire from 3:30 to 7:30 PM. Tom is finally able to get in and out of The Press Room in a walker and neither he nor I have to contend with the wheelchair. Looks like the day will be sunny but not as hot as it is currently. Hope we see you there! Linn |

Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Charley Noble Date: 21 Jul 12 - 10:18 PM I got back about a half hour ago. Another nice session with about a dozen people leading songs. Emery Hutchins, Tom and Linn, Tami, Steve, Justine and her three band mates, Marty, Jeri, myself, and a couple of others. I got to refresh a few songs for Justine's gang: "Neptune's Daughter" and "Shipmates." I also got to try out my new setting for Kipling's "Ballad of the Bolivar." And I also led "Tanqueray Martinio," "Shanghai Brown," "Mobile Bay," and "Storm Along Stormy" and "Yangtse River Shanty." I also got Emery to lead "West Indies Blues" accompanied with his concertina which was a treat. That's it for now. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 22 Jul 12 - 07:34 AM Lovely session! We had a new waitress, Katherine, who kept us from dying of thirst. She recognized a couple of the group from sessions at Ri-Ra. The rest of the crew included Tom and I (of course), Tami (Ranger1), Emery Hutchins, Jeri, the whole crew of the newly formed London Julies: Justine Donovan, Susan Young, Ramona Connelly and Carol Coronis, Marty Stock and Annie Storr, Steve Smith, Don Hale, Bill Lehrman and Carol Pierson, Barbara Benn who sang along from the periphery but disappeared when asked to sing. Chris Vaughan stopped in to say hi. We did have a gentleman at the bar who sang along and then danced back to the bar from an excursion to our side of the room. I trotted out a couple "new" songs -- not really new but Tom's songs that I'm now singing. But it was the first time in public and I'd not had a chance to figure out my key before today. As I explained to Hutch, "learning" them is an interesting process. I actually know them from singing along with Tom for 30 years. But I have to consciously move the song from the part of the brain I use when singing along to the part of the brain I use when leading a song. Tom, after not being able to play concertina for over four months, is back. Since he's visually impaired, we're working on ways he can easily find a home key to orient himself. Right now there's a sticky patch on one key, but I'll probably mark a couple with a dab of silicone seal or something. He and Hutch started the session with some concertina. I'll post the play list a bit later. Linn |

Subject: RE: July Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Charley Noble Date: 22 Jul 12 - 01:57 PM I forgot I led "Fish Fingers." That's a song put together by John Williams (UK), a friend of one of the founding members of Roll & Go named Chez Watts, composed back when they were doing national service at an orphanage. There are several other "fish finger" songs but this one is my favorite. Some day I have to record it. Charley Noble |
