Subject: 'Power of Music 1860-1915' Exhibit - ME From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque Date: 20 Jul 12 - 01:32 AM On Friday evening July 27 the "Museum LA" in the old Bates Mill on Canal St. in Lewiston Maine will open an exhibit of The Power of Music; 1860-1915 They asked if I had any antique instruments to put on display, so I loaned them one of my parlor guitars and may drop off a few other trinkets from the collection later this week. They have a whole bunch of enlarged period images of musicians and their instruments from the period, some of which I found pretty fascinating. they will have other period instruments besides mine on display, including an old reed organ. I didn't ask if it's in playable condition. I'm hoping to be at the reception and may perform a few period pieces to provide a little ambiance. Any of my fellow antique music fans in the South-central Maine area would probably enjoy this exhibit. |

Subject: RE: 'Power of Music 1860-1915' Exhibit -Lewiston Maine From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque Date: 20 Jul 12 - 10:53 AM Apparently this is a traveling exhibit, so keep any eye on your local museum or suggest they host it some time. It consists mainly of the art / photo displays, and the museum pulls whatever they can in the way of other displays together from the community. Check out: Power of Music Schedule |

Subject: RE: 'Power of Music 1860-1915' Exhibit -Lewiston Maine From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque Date: 20 Jul 12 - 11:32 PM The Museum LA or Museum of Lewiston / Auburn (Twin cities separated by the Androscoggin River). It seems to be a pretty new endeavor, as when I went in there they were doing a lot of painting and fixing up. It is in what used to be the BATES shoe / textile mill down by the river off of Canal St.. I'm not too sure but what this might be their first exhibit. A Friend from my Civil War reenacting unit, the 3rd Maine Infantry, works there and remembering my proclivity for music of the period, called me up to arrange the loan of some of my antique instruments for the display. The Museum seems to be about preserving the cultural history of the area and serves as an educational extension for both the community and the local schools. Bates College is in Lewiston so I imagine they interact a bit with the academic community. We had an interesting discussion about the "political correctness" (or lack thereof) in some of the music of the 1800s and the conflict between historical integrity and modern sensitivities. Subject for another topic I suppose... |
