I agree that playing music is good for the mind, but I take exception to the numbers those people are throwing about in the study. For example, the 'need' to start music instruction before age nine.

They are probably measuring other effects. A family that provides music lessons to a child that young probably also feeds the child well, has books in the home, reads to him, provides cultural experiences and travel, and monitors his progress in school. The result is somebody who does well on intelligence tests.

I think playing music is good for anybody, any age. And if you have to stop for a while, take it up later. It'll still be fun and be good for you.

We all know this intutitively, but it is worth repeating in case anyone is young enough to have missed it before, or old enough to need reminding why you keep on taking pleasure in just playing. Learning new is better. Playing with others best!
