Thanks! Odd way of writing the chords, though, I assume Fma7 is actually F7 rather than Fmaj7 as Dm7 and Am7 are written as Ami7 and Dmi7?

Fma7 is Fmajor(maj) 7, not F7. Minors are written as mi

I think these chords are a little more elegant, and a little less complicated than the ones from songtrellis. I worked the arrangement out myself back when I did club dates--If you're not familiar with chord charts,   each backslash marks a measure, And you play two counts for each chord symbol. Good luck!

That should be "F diminished". Don't know where the letter 'A' and the cicumflex came from-they weren't in the text I posted!

Fdim is easy - 1st string 1st fret, 3rd string 1st fret, 2nd and 4th strings open

It is true that that is an F diminished chord, but it isn't a very good one, because it doesn't have any bass notes in it. If you play the Db7 (Which you'd do by playing a C7 chord position one fret up) you'll have the Ab from the F dim chord on the bottom. And Db7 is actually an F dim triad, with an added Db, anyway.

I revised the chords with a Db9 in the place of the F dim, which really didn't need to be there.

Thanks for all the help - after years of playing only traditional or traditional sounding songs I've teamed up with a jazz flautist and thought it only fair to learn a couple of things from his territory.

You are to be commended. People who play "traditional" music can sometimes get a bit edgy about jazz. For guitar players, particularly, it is a journey into new territory. Really worth it, though...

A fair question, Stan. The short answer is "because I like it". It's strictly a matter of taste.
You can play any"F' that you like. I play the four note Fmaj7 in first position-

1-2-2-1-x-x

I am very fond of that sound--I I think it gives it a modern feel, and it gives a really solid sound in the bass. If you notice, I like to have the chords move by half steps as much as possible. It gives a nice jazzy movement in the bass, that is, if you use chord positions with th root on the Low E and A strings.

Check the Songtrellis chords that Loki linked to above, and you'll see that it's possible to play the song in the same key with very different chords, and that gives it a different feeling. It all depends on what *you* like....

I did a search and found this. It claims to be the Fred Astaire version.

You have to make your own decisions as to timing but the bits I could get sound closer to what I remember. It also has the verse.

I hate those kind of charts, because you have no idea where the measures start and end, and those chord extensions that sound so nice when a piano plays the tune rubato just plunge me into confusion. You cleaned them up nicely.

What seems to be a profound difference between our chord progressions--You have Fm6 where I (transposed to G) have Bb9, isn't at all--if you add a Bb to the Fm6 chord, you've got Bb9--it all comes down to how you voice the chord.
