I live in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. Each summer there is a Whitby Folk Festival. Were you aware of it?

Steve

Steve

Actually I had heard of it. So please note that this is Whitby Folk "Week" and not "festival". However, it would be really good to see Whitby in Ontario!

Graham,

Regardless of what people like Rick Fielding might tell you, Whitby, Ont. is the cultural centre of Canada. Just kidding, we are a town of about 70,000 about half an hour east of Toronto. Not much happens here, but it is a very nice place and although it has grown considerably in the last fifteen years, it still manages to retain a quaint small town feel.

If you find yourself anywhere near Toronto, look me up and I'll give you the three hour tour (2 1/2 of which are having a couple of pints and talking about Whitby England.

Regards,

Steve

Where in Whitby is it mainly located?

Any suggestions for accommodation?

Is there a convenient caravan site?

Haven't been to Whitby for years, so I'll have to get there.

Cheers Terry

The festival takes place pretty well all over Whitby, but the Festival Office is based in West Cliff School, and is usually well signposted. There is a festival camp site, and also, just outside Whitby itself but in easy walking distance, there is a Haven holiday site.

Graham -

Thanks for reminding me I haven't paid for my cottage yet!

The "Green Man" is conveniently situated at the foot of the Crag, so often gets used as a stop-off point for cuppas!

I'll be around all week, with or without my Terry Pratchett lookalike husband (depending on if they let him home from wherever he is).

A cheaper and closer site camp/caravan site to the town than the Haven site is Stoupe Cross. It's family owned and has a nice feel about it. Unfortunately for anyone wishing to take their dog camping, due to people not clearing up after their dogs and also letting them run wild, the family have now banned campers bringing dogs onto the site.

Jim Who but a Lancastrian would have to leave his own county and travel across the great divide to find good company, good ale and good seaside towns with good festivals. Are YOU dancing or observing watch out for me with me MUDCAT T shirt on. Keith

Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week

Keith if I wear my T shirt do you think people will think I'm you? Any musicians or dancers(cotswold) who are unattached and fancy a good time (I don't think that sounds quite right but I'm sure you get my drift) will certainly be made welcome by the Scratch who dance out on Monday Wdenesday and Friday. See Geoff the Duck in the Tap and Spile for details. Thursday looks like being a good day foe a Mudcat barbeque around 6pm so it won't intefere with any festival things you want to go to. Again the Tap and Spile will be the place to find out. Don't forget to wear your badges-contact Tig or the Badger soon if you want them for Whitby as they won't be there until Tuesday I think.

"Just wear your tee shirt and talk to anyone similar". It might be wiser to wear something else as well.

Got any contact details for Stoupe Cross, Jim Dunn? How far out is it, and how much do they charge for a tent site etc.

Stoupe Cross Farm is on the map of Whitby on www.streetmap.co.uk (sorry I can't do clickies yet). It is about 1.5 miles south west towards Saltwick Bay - so it's an easy walk down into Whitby and up a bloody great steep hill to get home!

Their number is 01947 603210. They don't take bookings except for plots with electricity (and they are all fully booked for the week). The lady told me there's unlikely to be a problem after the weekend but she couldn't guarantee the weekend itself. I guess if your tent is small enough there shouldn't be too much problem. In any case, there is a Haven site about quarter of a mile further out if you get stuck.

Cheers, Terry

For a night of aternative folky music every night of Folk Week...try The MIDDLE EARTH Tavern...Anything goes! I think they're all mad. The pub is over the river from the Tap & Spile, out towards the new bridge. You can play outside if the weather's O.K. TONE

Last time I was there I spent most of my time in the Sailing Club, where there's normally three sepoarate musical things happening at various parts of the building and the Fisherman's Boat Club for the tune sessions. And the Seaman's Mission. At least I think I did...

But Breakfast in the place where youi sign in, and trade your booking slip for a real ticket - Festival Office isn't.

I should be there anyway.

Yep, you do get a bit spoilt for choice! Trouble is, I have to turn back into a parent at some point in the evening, and wrest a young daughter out of the Spa ceilidh. In a couple of years' time she can do the wresting herself!

I'll be around with Geoff and Mrs Duck, and the Scratch for some of the time. I wonder what this year's theme will be...?

An don't forget to WATCH OUT FOR THE SCRATCH! tHIS CAN BE TAKEN AS EITHER AN ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE wHITBY sCRATCH mORRISMEN Oh Sod the stupid Caps Lock Button!!! I repeat - This can either be taken as an advertisement for the inestimable talents of the Whitby Scratch Morrismen, who re-form each year for another set of "Final Farewell" gigs, dancing opposite the Angel, by Midland Bank, at the East Side Market and anywhere else we can find a crowd. We are usually out on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1pm (meet at the Plough, 12.30) until we run out of steam. Any lost Cotswold Morrismen or musicians welcome. OR you can treat it as a warning that nowhere will be safe on the aforementioned days. YOU WERE WARNED!!!! Quack, Quack, QUACK!!! Geoff the Duck

Yep, the itinerant morrisman (aka SO) is itching to go!! (Sorry, but it's 7am and I've just got up to finish packing). See everyone later today. Typical, though, the weather's just turned naff.

Just returned from another brilliant week of music and beer (not always in that order) Nice to meet a few new faces, TerryK, Mcgrath of Harlow, Wullie to name but three- nice to see you upholding the tradition regarding kilts, Wullie!!!!!! The barbeque was a success and I think Dick and Susan had a good time. See you all again next year.
