Can anyone help with a couple of words in the first verse?

If your mother and your wife were drowning
I want to know which one you would be saving (X2)
As for me, I'm holding on to my mother
and my wife will have to excuse (what's this bit?)
I can always get another wife, I can never get another mother in my life.

Sounds as if it may be 'Lord Kitchener' when he sings it on YouTube.
Can't find the lyric, and I've listened to three performers gabble their way through the tiddle-tumtumtum!

Found the following:

Mother & Wife

If your mother and your wife were drowning
I want to know which one you would be saving
If your mother and your wife were drowning
I want to know which one you would be saving
Me, I'm holding onto my mother
My wife can be rescued - later

Cause I can always get another wife
But I can never get another mother in my life

I heard some foolish guys around the corner
Say that they'd rather their loveful wife than mother
I asked them the reason and this they answered
You can romance your wife but not your mother
My wife might be flourishing with gold and pearls
But my mother comes first in this blessive world

So I can always get another wife
But I can never get another mother in my life

I have one thing left to say
To compare your mother and your wife, well that's crazy
Cause your wife might be like a little lamb in front of you
And promise to be loving and loyal and true
But just go to your bathroom to sponge your face
On a return somebody else can take your place
#spring breakup

MOTHER & WIFE is sung by The Jolly Boys on "Pop N Mento" (2012). I heard it on Spotify.

First, a couple of corrections to the above lyrics:
Verse 2 line 2: ...loveful lawful wife...
Verse 2 line 6: ...blessive blessèd world...

Then there is this additional verse, as verse 3:

If [unintelligible] you had your mother
She may be mad but consider what a matter(?)
Don't matter hasty that your mother may be
She will never try to make this little talk so lengthy
But your wife from the time you have a row with her
She may be gone with somebody to America

So I can always get another wife
I can never get another mother in my life

Here's my transcription from another version that I heard on Spotify.

WIFE AND MOTHER
As sung by Lord Kitchener on "Some Spicy Delights" (2011)

If your mother and your wife are drowning,
I want to know which one you would be saving.
If your mother and your wife are drowning,
I want to know which one you would be saving.
Well, for me, I'm holding onto my mother,
And my wife she will have to excuse Kitchener.

I can always get another wife,
But I can never get another mother in my life.

I heard some men saying around the corner
That they'd rather their lawful wife than their mother.
I asked them the reason; this what they answer:
They can romance their wife but not their mother.
Well, my wife can be flourishing in pearl and gold,
But my mother comes first in this blessèd world.

'Cause I can always get another wife,
But I can never get another mother in my life.

If there's a quarrel with you and your mother,
She may be mad but still consider over the matter.
Don't care how hasty that your mother may be,
She will never try to make the fiddle(?) talk so lengthy,
But your wife from the time you have a row with her,
She gone with somebody to America.

So I can always get another wife,
But I can never get another mother in my life.

This is what I got to say openly:
To compare your mother with your wife is crazy.
Your wife is like a little lamb in front you.
She pretend to be loving, reliable, and true,
But go to the bathroom to sponge your face;
When you return, another man in your place.

So I can always get another wife,
But I can never get another mother in my life.

Jim, the bit you have missing is something like;

If a quarrel you have with your mother,
She may be mad, but consider this matter,
Don't matter how hasty your mother may be,
She will never try to make this little talk so lengthy...

This from Lord Kitchener on YouTube.

Robyn, I have that 'In the Club' CD and I've just played the song several times. I don't think that bit is intelligible English.
It also sounds a little different from the two recordings on YouTube, which are not the same as each other!
I think that it is 'Kitchener' on Lord Kitchener's version, which makes sense, and Morwen obviously hears it the same.

I think that if I do start to sing the song, I'll have to couple it with something dreamily romantic. It could invalidate my life insurance, otherwise. Chris.

Also known as "Mother's Choice."

When you sing it, you put in your name after "you'll have to excuse."

Lord Tanamo sang it in ska, and sang "Excuse Tanamo."

I suppose the Jolly Boys are saying some name like "Latimer" (!?). There's a slight possibility that the Jamaican Jolly Boys were more familiar with the Jamaican Lord Tanamo's version (or some Jamaican mento that came before them), and unknowingly mangled the word.

Haven't heard the Chaps. But the site says their is based on the Jolly Boys. So they may have just mumbled what they didnt understand.

If your Mother and your wife were drowning,
I want to know which one you will be saving.
If your Mother and your wife were drowning,
I want to know which one you will be saving.
Now as for me I'm holding onto my Mother,
and my wife she can always go in the gutter.
Cause when I can find another wife,
I can never get another Mother in life.

Through days of quarrelling with you and your Mother,
she may be mad for a moment over the matter.
Don't care how serious the talking may be,
She will never try to make your little talk go lengthy.
But if you argue with your wife she telling you shut up,
and if you don't she's going to someone else and do you wrong.
cause when you can get another wife you can never get another Mother in life.
I heard some men say around the corner
that they would save their wife and leave their Mother.
Asked them the reason and this was the answer,
that they can romance their wife and not their Mother.
Well my wife may be flourishing with pearls and gold,
my Mother comes first in this blessed world.
Cause when you can find another wife,
you can never find another Mother in life.
This is what I have to say finally,
to compare your Mother with your wife you're crazy.
Your wife is like a little lamb in front of you,
pretending to be reliable and true.
But go to the bathroom to sponge your face,
when you return another man in your place.
Cause when I can get another wife I can never get another Mother in life

As for me, I'm holding on to my mother
And my wife I will save a little later on

Though my wife I am lavishing with gold and pearls,
Still my mother comes first in this blessed world.

If there's a quarrel between you and your mum
She may be mad, but consider what it started from.
No matter hasty that your mother may be,
She will never try to make this little talk so lengthy.
But your wife, from the time you have a row with her,
She may be gone with somebody to America.
