Working fine for me, using the UK link:
http://www.google.co.uk/

Try that?

Other search engines are available ;-)

I'm in the UK, and I've managed to open google.com all right. Got a doodle of an Olympic diver.

Switch to a different browser. The one I've been using habitually for the past several months decided today not to recognise my email. It did add helpfully that my user name and password were "available" and was I trying to create a new account. Other browsers weren't so chatty and just loaded what I wanted without comment.

Try clearing the cache on your browser. It used to be easy to tell people how to do this, but the cache-clearing features of the browsers are becoming harder to find. Should be under "tools" or "settings."
In Google Chrome, it's the "clear browsing data" option under "tools," which is accessed by clicking that little wrench icon toward the upper-right corner of your browser.
In Internet Explorer, click that gear icon toward the upper-right corner of your browser. Then "Internet Options" and choose the "general" tab, and then "browsing history."
In Safari, click the gear icon toward the upper-right corner of your browser. Then "Preferences" and choose the "privacy" tab, and then "browsing history," and choose "remove all Website data."
Can't tell you about Firefox. It has become too bulky, so I don't have it on my new computer.

Joe in my Firefox (14.0.1 under Ubuntu 12.04) it's on Edit/Preferences/Privacy then click on clear your recent history, open up the Details list (it it's not open already), then tick the Cache item (and untick any of the others that you might not want to clear: Cookies etc), set the Time range drop down to your desired value (Everything if you want all) and press the Clear Now button!.

It's easier than it looks written out (not that I've ever bothered!).

With any browser, using the "in-browser" cache clearing may be of limited effectiveness, since an "open file" can't be cleared. Browsers vary in how much "stuff" they hold open while the browser is running.

A more effective method in Windows, that should be good regardless of what (or how many) browser(s) you use, is to close the browser(s), open Windows Explorer, right click on the system drive (usually C:\) and click "Properties." Click "Disk Cleanup" and make sure that temp files (and for some browsers "Temporary Internet Files") are selected for deletion before you click the OK to actually delete the junk.

Maybe your DNS is buggered?

Does http://173.194.67.94/ work? - that should take you straight to Google bypassing the DNS.

Maybe your DNS is buggered?
That would be a problem with your ISP. A probable reason if it occurs on all browsers.

A rather remote possibility is a DNS Service failure due to the Malware discussed at:

Tech: A REAL Internet Shutdown – Malware

The malware that's the subject of that thread redirected some internet access requests to phony sites. It does appear that not all accesses were redirected, although none of the reports on the malware that I saw directly addressed the issue of what was redirected.

The FBI phony phony sites that intercepted the redirected connections and redirected them to the appropriate sites were shutdown on 09 July, with the warning that anyone still infected could lose all internet connection at that time.

SOME ISPs were also intercepting redirected connections and redirecting them, so shutdown of the FBI sites would not necessarily have caused an immediate loss of connection for those being redirected for people who use an ISP that was redirecting redirected contacts; but if the sites that were redirecting the redirected connections stopped redirecting them later than the FBI did most sites would still remain accessible, until the redirecting ISP sites stopped redirecting what was being redirected.

It does appear that the Redirector malware did not redirect everything, but may have passed connections that didn't look profitable on without redirection. Googledotcom would be a target for redirection simply because you have to go to/through there for gmail, and email accounts of any kind probably were targeted for redirection by the malware redirectors. Sites that didn't offer the likelihood of profitable information may not have been redirected by the malware so they should still work even after all the various redirectors of redirected connections shut down.

While the likelihood that this is the current problem is probably fairly remote, the directions for quickly checking it out are given in the thread to which the link above directs you. The FBI test site may also have been shut off already, but I'd expect the links to the DNS Service group sites a few posts down in the thread should direct you usefully.

(Just gotta check out all the possibilities.)

John

I'm having a similar problem but with Facebook, not google. I can get to fb via iphone but not via desktop, regardless of browser, regardless of clearing caches. I get a message "waiting for response from..." but it never gets there.

You should check if your hosts file has been modified (C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts). Usually there's nothing in it but some malware will put entries in to redirect you.

Also worth rebooting your router if you have one (one of our laptops sometimes has trouble connecting when the router gets itself in a tiz). Also check you are not blocking it in firewall settings.

Went away all by itself. Also heard that a friend was unable to get on facebook today. Seems to be fixed.
