DigiTrad:
LIVING LEGEND
PILGRIM
PRIDE OF MAN
TEN O'CLOCK AND ALL IS WELL
THAT'S THE WAY IT'S GONNA BE
THE WAVES ROLL OUT

I'm looking for the lyrics to a song that I think was sung by Bob Gibson, and I think may have been written by Shel Silverstein. It's about an aging folk-singer/musician looking for a gig, and starts:

"Hey, Mister, can you use a living legend?..."

Greetings:

That song by Shel Silverstein and sung by Bob Gibson is on, perhaps, my favorite "folk" album-"Funky in the Country". I sure wish Bob Gibson would've released on CD before he died. My two vinyl copies are in good shape, but... I actually was at The Amazingrace Coffeehouse when some of it was being recorded. A couple friends and I have even, just recently, started singing "Funky in the Country" at Open Mics.

Here it is (Enjoy!):

"Ain't it great to be a living legend...

Hey Mister-can you use an old folksinger
Would your patrons like some old time soul
Can they dig the "Foggy Mountain Breakdown"
Sorry I don't play no rock 'n roll.

But I can make'em cry to "Molly Darling"
Sing along to "Row Your Boat Ashore"
I'll play until the dawn and
When the crowd is gone
Mister, I'll be glad to sweep your floor.

You should have been in New York back in '60
Hey, wasn't I a star there for awhile
But New York messed up my head
Got strung out on reds
Bobby Dylan went and copped my style

Oh, but I can make'em cry to "Molly Darling"
Sing along to "Row Your Boat Ashore"
Streetlife sure is fun
When you're twenty-one
But, Mister, I ain't twenty-one no more

So, I take the love of them that still remember
Take the help from them who care to give
Swap my songs for sandwiches and shelter
Even a living legend's gotta live

Oh, but I can make'em cry to "Molly Darling"
Sing along to "Row Your Boat Ashore"
Michael, row your boat ashore.
Hallelujah
Michael, row your boat ashore.
Hallelujah
Michael, row your boat ashore.
Hallelujah
Michael, row your boat ashore.
Hallelujah"

For some (not all) of Bob Gibson's music on CD, try FolkEra Records website. I just recently purchased several of his CD's. Including the live reunion concert "Gibson and Camp-- Revisited". Any search engine will turn up the site's URL.

The URL is

E-mail them and ask for the Rediscover catalog -- you'll be surprised. Happy hunting !!

I'm looking for the lyrics to the Talking Skiing Blues, maybe called Talking Ski Vacation Blues or something like that. I think it is a Gibson/Silverstein piece.

I found an incomplete recording of it in a box of old cassette tapes. Unfortunately, the tape ran out before the song did. The song tells the story of a first time ski adventure.

Any help will be appreciated.

Dave.

It's on an Elektra LP--Ski Songs(or something like that). Folk Era may have that one too. * * * * * *

Bob was living in Portland, Oregon to be near his daughter, Susan, while his disease (progressive supranuclear palsey) was taking a toll on him. He wanted to get back to Chicago friends & the music, so he tossed a wonderful party at a north shore hotel. We sang well into the morning hours for Bob (who couldn't play at all by then). Shel was there, Fred Holstein, Ed Holstein, Roger Ebert and a slew of others.(Me too.) Bob Gibson meant a whole lot to us on the Chicago scene. He sure was a mentor of mine! It was a thrill to have him be part of a benefit for me in '91 when stuff started to go downhill here. Well, Bob flew back to Portland after his farewell party and he died exactly a week later! In effect he had thrown his own wake! A classy way to go. And we all had a chance to say farewell to Bob. It was truly an amazing night and it'll stay with me for a long while I'm sure. Art Thieme
