Subject: RE: Hogeyed Men, The Raven & me on a ship From: matt milton Date: 05 Aug 12 - 10:27 AM Haven't been to Sharp's since the launch of the new Penguin folk song book – which was another great evening. I'm not a regular there by a long way - I've only been 3 times in total. I like the atmosphere there though. Are you coming over to the UK or something? |

Subject: RE: Hogeyed Men, The Raven & me on a ship From: matt milton Date: 04 Aug 12 - 03:10 PM It was a really fun night. I can recommend any London-based folkies getting in touch with Woody Newman, who organises the night. (He's the ship's caretaker.) Talking of being shanghaied, the audience is kind of a captive audience, because the ship is in quite a touristy area. So we played to an audience of friends and folkies, but also to a lot of random tourists and after-work Friday-night drinkers who only came in because it was a cheap place to have a drink, away from all the packed pubs. Because you're surrounded by wood, acoustic instruments sound good. I didn't have time to learn any proper old songs unfortunately. But I played a couple of sea-related songs. "Let the Mermaids Flirt With Me" (Mississippi John Hurt). And also "New York Trader", from the Penguin book of English folk songs. |

Subject: RE: Hogeyed Men, The Raven & me on a ship From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 03 Aug 12 - 12:07 PM I wish I could be there. Best of luck. Did you ever choose an old song for this gig? I didn't know you did blues and bluegrass. How about 'The Lily of Arkansas?" It's not from 1580, but it's nautical. I like the tune used by Dave Para and Cathy Barton, if you can find it. |
