Four eBay traders that I've spotted - samandben0; redgoya25; gregz59; bluecityboy1969 - as well as my own little trading post, one-for-every-fair-and-rainy-day, are drawing on the collection of the late Ian Chappell, sold at auction by Omega Auctions of Stockport on 30th June, 2012. So my question is: who was Ian Chappell, the owner of one of the all-time great folk LP collections? A Google trawl identifies a John Ian Chappell, born in 1949, and director of the Hampshire-based South Eastern Museums Service. The address given tallies with a label on one of the LPs: '8 Waterloo Close, Waterlooville, Hants, PO8 8QJ.' I've also gleaned that he had no immediate family, hence the auction of his collection. But what was he like as a character? I'm supposing that he was a known figure in folk circles Hampshire-way. Me, I think of him as a benefactor, having been lucky enough to pick up 11 job lots from the auction (a tip of the iceberg).
