Subject: Trad and old fashioned events in Kent From: GUEST,Gavin Atkin Date: 04 Aug 12 - 07:05 AM The Frittenden sessions start again in September. They take place on the last Sunday (except at Christmas) in the month from September to April, from 8pm. An entertaining old fashioned and traditional pub evening with songs and tunes, and plenty of variety and good humour. If you've got a song, a tune, a stepdance or story, enjoy joining in with a chorus or just like listening in the bar, please come along. We go on until it's time to close with Nellie Dean the old way – just as people used to before the telly and the computer. Also, we'll be re-starting the trad music classes at the Gun & Spitroast, Horsmonden, on Wednesday the 12th September, and there will be a special Harvest Hop barndance with the class band and friends - and no doubt a few surprise entertainments at the Bell Jorrocks on the 24th November. Finally, we're promoting a talk and concert by the brilliant American concertinist, singer and teacher Jody Kruskal, who is an Old Time and Contra music specialist. The event titled 'American Old-Time styles and the Concertina' takes place at Whitstable Labour Club on the 9th October from 8pm . Session guests for 2012/13 30th September: Matt Quinn 28th October: Alvar Smith 25th November: Annie Dearman and Steve Harrison 27th December: Peter Collins 27th January: John Morgan Hoorah! Our thanks to everyone who has kindly agreed to perform for us, and to make these sessions special. The event is organised by Julie and Gavin Atkin. Subject: RE: Trad and old fashioned events in Kent From: Rusty Dobro Date: 05 Aug 12 - 05:28 AM Is that the same John Morgan who used to play in the Sevenoaks area in the '60's, I think with someone called Tony? |
Subject: RE: Trad and old fashioned events in Kent From: Kit Griffiths Date: 05 Aug 12 - 09:37 AM John had his 70th birthday this year, and I wrote this for him: Methinks we see you up on stage, a pint pot in your hands, Singing songs of the olden days, that we've loved since time began. Methinks we see you yet again, and the years have slipped away, For it must be nigh on fifty years since we first heard you play. Now you're threescore and ten, and again Your music casts its spells, From Wildernesse to Rochester, From the Weald to Tunbridge Wells. Your ballads and your love songs, the choruses you've led With a squeezebox and an old guitar -And a pool cue on your head. |
Subject: RE: Trad and old fashioned events in Kent From: GUEST,Gavin Atkin Date: 05 Aug 12 - 01:58 PM Rusty: I think it likely is! Either way, this one's a fine singer and we're delighted he's agreed to sing for us that night - though he does often come along anyway! Gavin |
Subject: RE: Trad and old fashioned events in Kent From: GUEST,Gavin Atkin Date: 05 Aug 12 - 01:58 PM Pool cue? there will be a reason for that. Unicorn impressions? Gavin |
Subject: RE: Trad and old fashioned events in Kent From: Kit Griffiths Date: 05 Aug 12 - 02:49 PM He used to sing one song (possibly the Barley Mow? Can't remember) while balancing a broom or a pool cue on his forehead throughout. Sometimes beer was involved. |
