Subject: Trials, Troubles, Tribulations
From: jb in Cape Breton

I've been trying to remember the words to this old gospel lament which was on an LP I listened to alot in the early 1970's. What LP I can't remember - maybe Maria Muldaur when she still recorded with Geoff?

Does anybody know this song??

The refrain goes something like:

"When the fire comes down from heaven And the blood shall fill the sea I'll be waiting there for Jesus And forever with him be"

Dreadfully apocalyptic - but the tune that goes with it is hauntingly beautiful. If anyone can help with lyrics for verses I would be most greatful.

Subject: Lyr Add: TRIALS, TROUBLES, TRIBULATIONS (E C Ball)
From: lamarca
Date: 22 Oct 99 - 11:59 AM

This was written by Estil C. Ball of Rugby, Virginia. Rounder has a wonderful CD of E. C and his wife, Orna, called simply "E.C. and Orna Ball", Rounder CD 11577. These lyrics are my transcription from that recording; there's a few words and phrases I'm not quite sure of:

TRIALS, TROUBLES, TRIBULATIONS
(E C Ball)

Trials, troubles, tribulations
Such has never been before
When the angels pour upon us
Their ---(?) breath forevermore.

Chorus:

When the fire comes down from heaven
And the blood shall fill the sea
I'll be carried home by Jesus
    And forever with him be.

The Beast with horns will come upon you
One with seven, one with ten.
Men will cry unto the mountains,
They'll pray to die, but cannot win.

Chorus:

The mark must be upon your forehead,
These worldly goods you then can buy (?)
"Depart from me, I never knew you!"
You'll hear our blessed Savior cry.

Chorus:

Thank you M. L. E C Ball is my all-time favourite artist. I've got a lot of all-time favourites (as any regular Mudcatter might know) but E C is the one I'd take to that desert island.

Rick

Rick and Lamarca: Let's start an E. C. Ball fan club! We could merge with the Washington Phillips club and the Horton Barker club I also want to start.

The missing line is:

When the angels pour upon us
Their vows of wrath forever more

'These worldly goods you then can buy' is correct. In the version I have, Ball sings 'my' blessed saviour rather than 'our'. Source: Lomax Southern Journey series volume 6: 'Sheep, Sheep, Don'tcha Know the Road'.

Cheers, Stewie.

I forgot to mention also that the title is given simply as 'Tribulations' - and that is what Ball calls it in his spoken introduction.

Can some one help me with some chords for this song? I was smart enough to get The Real Music Box nine CD collection from Rounder (fantastic set!) that includes this, but wouldn't you know, my cd player has snuffed it, so I can't even listen to it at the mo.

Thank you!

Maria Muldaur does this on her LP "Gospel Nights".
This was re-released on Takoma/Plus One in CD, unfortunately discontinued (but I have mine!).

When the angels pour up-(G/F#bass)(Em)on us
Their (C)vows of (D7)dread forever-(G)more.

It's also on the great 1967 LP, "Pottery Pie" by Geoff and Maria Muldaur, which was mentioned up at the top of this thread several years back...

I just recorded this with my band and we had a devil of a time figuring out the words. We finally had to actually refer to the book of revelations to decipher some of E.C.'s words.

TRIALS, TROUBLES, TRIBULATIONS
(E C Ball)

Trials Troubles Tribulations
Such has never been before
When the angels pour upon us
their vials of wrath forever more

(chorus)
when the fire comes down from heaven
and the blood shall fill the sea
I'll be carried home by jesus
and forever with him be

the beast with horns will come upon us
one with seven one with ten
men will cry unto the mountains
they'll pray to die but cannot win

chorus

the mark must be upon your forehead
these earthly goods you then can buy
depart from me I never knew you
you'll hear my blessed savior cry

chorus

Nope, it isn't VOWS of wrath, it's VIALS of wrath.

By listening, it's nearly impossible to distinguish vials from vows, but Mr. Ball wrote this

from the book of Revelations, wherein VIALS OF WRATH is referenced.

VOWS or VIALS..?? CITATION NEEDED!!

Trials, troubles, tribulations
Such has never been before
When the angels pour upon us
Their vials of wrath forevermore.

When the fire comes down from heaven
And the blood shall fill the sea
I'll be carried home by Jesus

Indeed! Vials of wrath! Thanks, madnell!
Revelation (KJV):
16:1 And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.
2 And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.
3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.
4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood....
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, ...
10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,...
12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared....
17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.
[When I first tried to transcribe that song, I thought it was "vilesome breath!"]
