Subject: Lyr Req: They're building a house at the end of o
From: GUEST,oldgirl

Can anyone help please I think the one verse is
They were unloading ice, when all of a sudden a great block of ice fell down off the van on a man, I ran to pull off the great block of ice, when he smiled up at me and said I think I will wait till it melts, I think I will wait till it melts, in my work I've been getting as hot as can be, so give me a woodbine and go for your tea.

Oxford University has the sheet music for this song:

TRIFLING OCCURRENCES, OR, I HAD TO COME DOWN FOR NAILS
Words by Frank Dunlop ; music by Frank Lynne ; sung by Frank Lynne.
London : Charles Sheard & Co., ©1904.

First line: They're building a house at the end of our street.

'They're building a house at the end of our street, the scaffoldings 40 foot high....'

then a girl comes down the hill and falls off her bike, 'I always get of like that, I always get off like that..'

My Grandmother used to sing it but none of the rest of us can remember the words... would also appreciate the lyrics or a helpful link.

Clive Dunn (from the tv show Dads Army) was Frank Lynne's Grandson and recorded an album called Trifling Ocurrances, which also included the song Trifling Occurances (which his grandfather co-wrote).

I cant find a link to a clip or the lyrics anywhere though...

I've just bought the Clive Dunn album from E-bay so when it arrives (around 16th August) I'll get the old record player down from the loft and transpose it.

I'm genuinely excited.. (sad isnt it)

Perhaps Jim might tell us how to access the words on the Oxford University site?

Best wishes,

Peter

You can't view them online. Some libraries will make images of documents and mail or email them to you for a fee; I suppose it tells you that somewhere at Oxford's web site. Here's a link to the catalogue entry:
