Subject: Origins: I saw Miss Rosa Dancing From: Joybell Date: 08 Aug 12 - 05:13 PM I have a short list of song titles that I've not been able to find anywhere except on one songster that I can't afford to have copied. I've been studying a 19th century performer for over 10 years and I've located most of the songs he sang. The three songs have quite distint titles. "I Saw Miss Rosa Dancing" "Mary Deare" and "Ginger Dine". They come from the 1840s. They might appear among the songs of other minstrels. My man performed in Australia after leaving London in 1852 but these songs were not sung here, as far as I can tell. They were sung in London and possibly in America during that very early period of minstrelsy/music-hall. I've looked everywhere I can think of. Can anyone help please? Cheers, Joy |
Subject: RE: Origins: I saw Miss Rosa Dancing From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 08 Aug 12 - 05:56 PM If you mean Mary Deane, (which another list suggests was what you're after), the British Library has a score: Title: Mary Deane, melody sung by the Ethiopian singers ... the poetry by J. Oliver. [Begins: "There was a time".] Author: George Joseph Oliver Allman Publication Details: London, [1854] Language: Unspecified Identifier: System number 004171188 Physical Description: fol. Shelfmark(s): Music Collections H.2409.(8.) UIN: BLL01004171188 (It also looks as if a copy was available on Amazon at some time). Ginger Dine I only found referred to in Dandy Jim songs. Nothing on Miss Rosa. Mick |
Subject: RE: Origins: I saw Miss Rosa Dancing From: Joe Offer Date: 08 Aug 12 - 06:49 PM Well, I searched for "I Saw Miss Rosa Dancing," and I found discussion about it on another Website under the topic heading, Repertoire of the Minstrel Barlow." Then, of course, I found that all the information had been posted by Joybell. That, of course, brings us back to Square One..... I'll keep looking, but I have to write a speech first. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Origins: I saw Miss Rosa Dancing From: Joybell Date: 08 Aug 12 - 07:05 PM Thanks, Joe. I often meet myself these days. Around and around. Thanks, Mick. Yes my mistake. Sorry. Mary Deane it is. I missed that reference. Thank you. I'll add that author to my list. I think I have an earlier publication date for this song but that wouldn't be surprising. Cheers, Joy |
Subject: RE: Origins: I saw Miss Rosa Dancing From: Joybell Date: 08 Aug 12 - 07:10 PM Yes both Ginger Dine and Mary Deane were published between 1847 and 1851 in songsters sold by W. R. Barlow in London. |
Subject: RE: Origins: I saw Miss Rosa Dancing From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 11 Nov 13 - 10:56 AM W. R. Barlow also wrote "The Oyster Boat," posted 10 Nov. '13. I couldn't find a thread "Repertoire of the Minstrel Barlow." |
