Just heard the piece on the Harry Smith event (at the UEA. London on the 15th of September) is in today's Financial Times (forgive the emphasis but I doubt I'll get to say that more than once in my lifetime). Here's a wee taste - I'm told the article in the paper is more extensive, but I love it that our humble take on Buell Kazee's Waggoner Lad has been described as 'gorgeous & stately'...

The Load-down: American Folk - A look at the 60-year-old 'Anthology of American Folk' and its enduring influence on the genre

Blandiver,

Do you have a link to this event? This is the first I've heard of it, and I sure as hell don't want to miss it.

Many thanks.

Where the Weird Things Are

I must say I was expecting to be in Fortean Times before Financial Times. It's a funny old world...

Today's FT also has an article on Pussy Riot, the Russian band currently facing up to seven years' imprisonment for their anti-Putin protest in a Moscow Cathedral.

Their songs may not be to every Mudcatter's taste, but you can't deny it's genuine protest music with very real consequences for those brave enough to perform it. Watch them on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCasuaAczKY&feature=plcp

Incidentally, the FT often has rather good arts coverage. I did 12 months' student placement in a stockbroker's office many years ago, and found people always left me alone if I had an FT propped up in front of me. This bought me a precious 30 minutes every morning to drink my coffee in peace while I read the theatre reviews.

Hi all - booking information for the Harry Smith event (America Changed Through Music: Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music at 60) is available here: http://www.americachangedthroughmusic.com/p/registration-booking.html .

It's taking place on Saturday September 15th at the University of East Anglia's London campus (very near Liverpool Street). The whole day is £15 (including food and refreshments) or if you just want to come for the music portion of the day it's free (though you still have to fill in a booking form). The line-up is pretty exciting, so hope to see lots of you there.

I see there's a duo called Rapunzel and Sedayne on the music section. Are they anything to do with the person who posts here as Sedayne?

Yes – Sedayne is actually Rapunzel. Funny old world, eh?

I am prone neither to gratuitous praise, nor to the excessive use of superlatives, so others will have to provide them, I will only suggest that it is well worth hearing the above mentioned version of "The Waggoner's Lad". Well done, Sedayne (and Rapunzel).
