Subject: FSGW Getaway 2012
From: Janie
Date: 11 Aug 12 - 08:08 PM

The time is drawing near! I'm a relative newcomer, having attended my first Getaway in 2002, and I missed it last year, but gawd willin' and the hospital will let me off, I'll be there this year.

Who's coming?!!!! (and if there is already a more appropriate thread, please delete this and refresh the other - I may not have searched under the right terms.)

I'm even more of a newcomer - 2004.

Right now we're planning on being there this year.

I see a program planning thread, a getting-to-the-Getaway thread, and a mongol-post-from-Getaway-to-Canada thread, but no generic thread. So I guess this is it!

Sheryl and I will be there.

It's amusing to think that some of the 'Catters would probably consider me an established regular, even though I've only been attending since 1996.

Hope there are lots of newcomers each year, and that the age of newcomers gets younger and younger every year!

I confess to some conflicted emotions. My son -not a folkie but open to folk within his eclectic musical tastes - actually wants to come and I am willing to spring for his fee - but if he can come it means he has not yet found a steady job!

We are indeed trying to encourage people to bring kids and grandkids, but it's tough. Both the economics of it and the demographics make it difficult. And of course there's a programming catch-22 as well: we want kids to come, so we're trying to plan some activities for them, but we don't know if any will come, so...   Janie, if your son is looking for a job, it sounds like he's a "young adult" rather than a kid. He's welcome too! Hope people will let us know early on who's coming!

The program planning is proceeding apace, and we have some fun stuff planned. We'll get it all put together in the next few weeks, and will let you know when the schedule is up.

Y'all come!

Nancy

P.S. I've been to every Getaway since 1974! I think maybe Bob Clayton is the only one who's been to more.

We DO appreciate those who manage to make it... even if not every year.. from far away. (The Left Coast of the US is quite a trek, but several from there are close to getting their "regular" merit badge. And New England already has several merit badge holders.)

Iceland, Guam, Oz, England, Israel...etc... have made it quite an event. We will miss everyone who can't manage this year.

I have 'only' been coming since 1978, but 34 consecutive years ain't bad! (Oh, that tedious, wearing, hour-long drive..... ;>)

Nancy delightfully asked me to do a half-hour shtick somewhere in the weekend, and I am open to suggestions as to what would best delight, short of declining :D.

I'll start now mentioning the silent auction early and often. Bring something to contribute to the auction, and please check out the auction offerings and make a bid on something you might use or want. Doesn't have to be music related at all - but please, do not bring stuff to the auction that most reasonable people would agree is best tossed in the trash. Bizarre, tacky, "outdated", hidiobilia, tarnished, dusty, broken but repairable, etc. are fine and welcomed. But please, no soiled or stained cloth items, including stuffed animals, and no items absolutely festooned with dust bunnies or mold intermingled with mouse droppings, please. Just use a little common sense. If you have put out a cd or book and want to donate a copy or three to the auction, these items nearly always do well.

The location of the auction at West River is not prime, and many people either don't realize the auction is there or easily forget about it, and there is not a pa system that allows for reminder announcements at meals, so please try to keep it on your internal radar screen. Even for folks traveling some distance on airplanes there is likely some small item you could contribute or some small item you could bid on that you can transport, to, from, or both. If you really can not bring something and find nothing at all of interest to bid on, consider making a small donation to the scholarship fund. Haven't checked with the FSGW folks on this, but expect you can make a donation through the auction, even if you don't make a bid on anything.

Proceeds from the auction go toward the Getaway scholarship fund. In leaner days I have myself benefited from the scholarship fund, and these days there are many people living through lean times who would not be able to attend without some financial help.

Edmund and I are coming, barring international incidents and unignorable mandates to keep calm and remain at our desks. We have been booked to contribute to a workshop of songs about Napoleon and similarly famous historic figures, so we are also engaged in learning something new ... in six weeks flat!

Just got back from the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival, so Getaway is still a bit foggy in the forecast.

Suggest a "meeting" at the Getaway to coordinate "something" post Getaway that can include as many travellers as travel and local work schedules permit.

If nothing else seems to be happening, don't spend $$ on a hotel ..unless you just want to. We do have room for a couple people who don't mind OUR hectic last minute packing.

CeltAddict, are you asking for a ride to the Getaway? Of course you may -- the more the merrier! But let me know if I'm misunderstanding your question.

News flash! The 2012 Getaway schedule is now on line, here!

Needless to say (but I'll say it anyway), this schedule is subject to change. We hope we won't have to change it, but ya never know. If you are a workshop leader and we have you in two places at once, let us know pronto and we'll fix it. But, as I've said in past years, if you'd just like to BE in two (or more) places at once, well, join the club. Better too much than too little, eh?

Looking forward to seeing all of you!

Nancy

Just a reminder to anyone who wants to do the "Spoken word" set. We must keep each story, poem, down to no more than 5 minutes.

I went to my 60th class reunion and one of the classmates went on and on ad nauseum about nothing and we ran out of time. Very irritating.

Running over your time is the mark of an amateur.

The scheduled workshops and mini-concerts look wonderful! (Now to figure out how to be 2 or 3 places at once. I have yet to master that.)

So glad Pete Kraemer is doing a Woody Guthrie workshop. Can't let Woody's 100th year go by without that!

I'll be bringing along copies of The Complete Poetry of Cicely Fox Smith, if anyone is interested in providing a good home for one. After the Getaway I'll be doing a set of concerts and special events with Bob Zentz in Virginia related to our work with C. Fox Smith's nautical poetry. I'll also have songbooks and CDs that also feature her poems adapted for singing.

We're signed up. This will be a grand experiment, with the three of us, and Kiran only 5. Here's hoping we don't catch his cold just in time for the Getaway.

I really hope some folks bring younger children, in the 4 to 7 range. For DC area people, day registration is a great and affordable option for families, and the more families there are, the more we can pool our resources so the kids can have an adult keeping an eye on them while the other parents and grandparents enjoy the workshops.

I understand why things have changed, but I really miss the days when I was a kid going to the Getaway, and there were enough kids running around that we could have lots of programming for us (I remember children's concerts with Bob Devlin at Prince William Forest), and so that we could run around together and feel totally free and comfortable. Admittedly 5 is a little young for that level of freedom, but it certainly is easier when there are more kids and families.

The Getaway was going to be the one thing that mitigated summer being well and truly over for me this year. Nancy had even linked me up with some (astonishingly local) folks to car pool with.

Oft agley, yep, that's where the plans went. First it was the busted 35+ year old water heater that had to be replaced and new plumbing ("gorsh, ain't never seen a water heater THIS old! That dang thing is TURQUOISE! amazin!") There went the first chunk of change.

Then there was the tooth with the big filling that crumbled and needed a crown so I can open my mouth in public without shame. Second hunk of change, and no way to afford going anywhere.

I hope you all have a fantastic time, sing fortyleven verses of obscure ballads to each other, and in general carouse yerself silly in song, hug Judy and Dennis for me, and start plotting for next year, when I hope to be in the chorus.

The last chance to register for 2012 is coming up!

This Friday, mid-afternoon EDT, FSGW needs to tell West River how many meals to prepare for each meal, and what kinds of special diets and food allergies to deal with. Even if we can find a bed-space for you last minute, your food needs will not be registered with the center's kitchen if you don't tell us now. Even if you can't send the money until next week, let us know if you're planning on coming. If you want to dine with us, speak up now!

If you need a scholarship or price-break, contact me pronto. Send me a private message, or better yet, e-mail me!. I'll want to chat with you, ideally by telephone, to make sure we can make the weekend affordable for you, so include your phone number(s).

Just a matter of cash flow... just flowing slower than the bills this month it seems. If I can pay when I arrive, I should be OK.

That being said, contributions are always welcome. I've been paying a programmer out of pocket for the open source upgrade, so the belt is tight these days.

Best way for me is our Paypal account. Of course you can always shove cash in my pocket when you see me at the Getaway. :)

Dear FSGW folks, I am trying to get in touch with Carly G. who is a wonderful singer and storyteller that I met at a Catoctin weekend in 1993 (!) sponsored by the Baltimore Folk Music Society. I am a visual artist, cantor, songwriter, musician, and collector of songs from off the beaten path. I recently came across some old drawings that I did of Carly and her family that I would like to share with her. The first is of Carly telling a children's story called "Let's Go on a Bear Hunt."   The other is of her son Sam, who was then a toddler, brushing a fallen leaf against his father's beard. It was a very sweet and tender moment between a father and son. I would like to post these drawings to my FB page but I did not want to do so without Carly's permission. I posted a similar message a little while ago on the thread for the 2005 FSGW Getaway by mistake.)   Carly, if you get this message please respond to my e-Mail lindabaersings at msn.com. Thank you, and everybody have a splendid and melodious FSGW weekend!

As I pack for Getaway, I want to insure that I bring proper clothing. I assume that Evening Dress will be required for Dinner and after, but how formal? Black tie? White tie? Shall I bring my dancing pumps? Should I wear Decorations? And will breakfast and luncheon be served indoors or on the veranda/terrace? Will the men in the evening retire to the Billiards Room for cigars and the ladies to the sitting room for discussion? I shall, of course, bring a supply of cartes de visite.

I do so want to do this properly!

Not to worry, Rap, Jacqui is sure to have the transparent tape required to stick the placard on your back that says "music stand." That, and a pair of long pants should be a sufficiently complete wardrobe for you. (You don't have to wear the placard throughout, but the long pants, buttoned and zipped, btw, are de rigueur, in your case.

The rain bums me out with regard to kids. Depending on how many children we end up with, it would be really helpful to set aside some indoor space for younger kids to play in. Parents/ grandparents can take turns watching them, but it's just not fair to ask small kids to sit and be quiet through workshops all day. I never did when I was a kid at the Getaway - we played all day, ran around, and if something interested us or there was a children's workshop or mini-concert we'd poke our heads in.

Unfortunately, unlike Prince William, there is no easy cabin to designate... and we are not allowed in the dining hall between meals.

Perhaps the ante-room off the old dining hall? (where performers wait at the concert?)

*sigh* every place has its pluses & minuses.

It's pretty important. The FSGW made a point of asking people to bring children this year, and we have really wanted to. This year we were specifically asked to, so we're giving it a try. But that can only work if the festival makes some accommodation for them. If it's raining, any kids that come need to have some space they can move around and make noise in. Otherwise the message is pretty clear - folks like the idea of children being around, but not the reality. It's hardly fair to ask children to come to a weekend event and then ask them to be seen and not heard. And it's not the way to get younger families interested in coming to the Getaway.

Sorry if I seem strident here, but this is important.

Dan

Even better is knowing that we can hand our beautiful bairn off to his grandma at the beginning of the weekend and know he's in good hands for - oh, at least a few weeks while we head off to Bermuda. Right? Right? Hello?

Dan, I'm bringing plastic beads with BIG holes and gimp that are very small person friendly, as well as glass and other beads for older kids (7- 105 year olds) and cords and beading thread to make necklaces, bracelets, anklets, bookmarks, hatbands, etc...I'm also bringing lots of origami paper and instructions for folding all sorts of things, and colored pens for decorating I may bring a jigsaw puzzle, if I can find an appropriate one. We are planning on setting up part of the Retreat Center middle room as a Crafts Area; a cabin lounge for kids as well would be great.

Feel free to call me; my number is on the recent Getaway email you all received.

Sure, I'll take care of the beautiful bairn while you go off to Bermuda. I assume the Bermuda trip means no new car this year, right?

Jennifer says she's housed all the families with kids in the same cabin (she couldn't remember off the top of her head which it was, but you'll find out when you get there), and the lounge room in that cabin can be designated as kids' play space.

BTW, George Rathbone says the age range for the fantasy games is 5-13, so you might want to give it a try. No pressure, of course.

FYI, the National Weather Service is now predicting temps around 70 and a 40 percent chance of showers for both Saturday and Sunday. Not perfect, to be sure, but it doesn't sound like a washout. Guess we'll find out...

I have to wonder what was the rational for bringing kids? Do we need to define "Kids"? Small children are easily bored in adult settings, so, if we are going to invite them, we must keep that in mind.

They'll probably plug in their earbuds and play on their iPads or Gameboys and ignore everyone around them. Hours of fun, as long as the batteries last or if there is an electric outlet nearby. The kids playing games outside, doing crafts, that sounds like children from 1966.

(I'll get my hat . . . )

My personal view is that if you want your children, or any children, to grow up with the view that making music (or baskets, or telling stories) are worthwhile and fun things to do, more fun then passively absorbing other people's products, they need to be around people of all ages who are doing these things, and enjoying themselves. It has been my observation, with my own son and many other families, that those kids running around seemly paying no attention are the ones who are making music and art as adults. The kids who stayed home with babysitters grew up to be fine people, I'm sure, but the folk world was that strange thing their parents did. The Getaway has a long history of having children around (ask Dan Schatz) but we have had a gap of a few years of few or no children coming. We would like to offer families the opportunity to come to the Getaway; as every parent knows, it has to be a different experience if you are responsible for kids ( and we do not offer formal babysitting.) But if we do have families coming, we can help them organize kid watching, or whatever works for them . The Getaway has always tried to be flexible to the needs of its participants. We are confident, based on experience, that parents know they must be responsible for their children not disturbing workshops. Hence Dan's legitimate concern about rain space for the little ones.

Thanks, everybody, for helping accommodate the kids. Carly said it so well - feeling welcome as a small child at events like the Getaway is the reason I and so many others still love this music and this community. (When I was a kid, my four favorite dates of the year were Christmas, my birthday, the Washington Folk Festival, and the Getaway. I still feel largely the same way.)

Must go; much to do before we head down.

We didn't miss the mess, but not too long after hitting it, re-routed through Louisiana... or Philadelphia or something. I dunno, but it took less time to get home than to get there--even with going over that big bridge thingie in NYC. I'm tired. I didn't stay up last night because I figured I had to get up the next morning and the previous two nights had been late ones. Friday was chatting, Saturday was a campfire.

I took my camera, and it never made it out of its case. Fun won out.

Elsewhere I wrote this as an example of that "Getaway spirit" I thinlk it belongs here too
"What can I write about the Getaway? singing and Mummers, friendship and Max as an Egyptian Princess! everyone being on voice, and one of the most MAGIC moments ever, when, after the Sunday evening concert a very respected singer came over and apologised for not singing a song I had asked for earlier in the w/e then said, "I will sing it for you now" and started, and as she sang others around joined in on the chorouses singing harmonies, until there was about 10 altogether singing "Tenting tonight" creating a perfect and Magical few moments !! So a big and Personal THANK YOU to Judy Cook and ALL the other participants!! "
My thanks also to the FSGW freiends who may not be Mudcatters!1 (there are some) who make this old English person so welcome and at home each time I visit, Sorry To Joe, but I only sang "the Gladiator" after much pressure had been applied!! It was a great Getaway. In addition to all the regulars there were three of my very favorite Maniacs there. Will brown, Jim Loney and Kat Logan. Excellent entertainers on their own and when combined in Meteora, just fabulous. It really pleased me to see them blend in so well in such a new venue.

I got over served again on Friday evening and paid for it dearly on Saturday. Even on Sunday I was so hung over I was not able to play the guitar for shaking like a dog passing pine cones. Still, it was worth it picking with Amos. It was sorta like being sea sick; first I was afraid I was going to die, then I was afraid I wasn't.

The NY Pike was a trial, bumper to bumper for miles and miles. We finally escaped to I- 295 for a while, then that was bunged up just as bad. We finally got back on the NJ pike and I missed the turn for the Garden State Parkway and we ended up buying the George Washington Bridge.
Got home about 11 pm with both eyes in the same socket; died for 7 hours.
I told myself that this is probably my last Getaway, but, the death threats may make me change my mind.

To all you wonderful folks who approve of what Jacqui and I are doing these days, thank you so much. My head is still living in the past when I had a singing voice, that growling out the words to songs that I used to sing is hard for me to settle for. NO! I'm not fishing!

The Getaway is a special kind of open-heart surgery. If you haven't felt the surge of an open heart lately before you arrive, you surely will by the time you leave. Assuming you ain't dead yet.

It is transportive, transformative, exalting and exulting, exhausting and uplifting and mystically dizzying. A wonderful piece of social engineering by big hearts and kind souls.

I think this was one of the "high light" Getaways for me. First, let me mention that the members of Meteora were active on Monday morning helping to put the place back together. Truer folkies never lived. I co-led two workshops. The first was with Donna Fletcher on "singing the blues". She had some great material and lectured a bit on technique and hints. It was a fine job and then we had the group members try out their wings on some old blues standards. It was a very happy bunch at the end of the workshop and it appeared some folks "cut their first blues eye teeth" that morning. I give Donna all of the credit, I mostly sat there, strummed guitar, and cast a few bon mots.

The second workshop was with Phil Fox on "Roadhouse songs." I think Phil, whom I had never met until this weekend, looked the part of a roadhouse singer better than I. We had lots of participation. I want to thank Amos for adding a song after I intimidated him when he said he didn't have a song ready. As you might guess, he had a fine song, Richard Thompson's "Vincent Black Lightning." Somewhat to my surprise we had a few acapella contributors, but that worked fine. Thanks to Kathy for providing the required Hank Williams number, couldn't a-been a Roadhouse without one.

I almost missed putting my name on the sign-up list for the Sunday night concert, but they squeezed me in. I really appreciated the audience response to Kristina Olson's "Stop Doing So Well."

I tried staying up late on Saturday. I lasted until 2:30 AM, Sunday. I got up at 7:30 AM on Sunday morning for breakfast and ran into one of my roommates in the bathroom. I noted I was surprised to see him up so early. He said he hadn't gotten up, rather he had not yet been to bed (how do they do that?). After lunch I had half hour with no particular workshop that stirred my soul. I then spent about 20 minutes trying to remember where I had last left my guitar. I can't remember anytime in my adult life when I didn't know where my guitar was. I finally remembered where I had last left it and I fetched it soon enough to co-lead the roadhouse workshop. I think I'm swearing off late night singing however.

I know many people were worried about the weather. It rained gently on Friday night, but Saturday and Sunday were beautiful sunlit days.

Marge, who didn't attend, says "Hi" back to all of those who asked about her. You know who you are.

It was also a great pleasure to see Max for the first time in a while and talk about Radio, the music business, and Penn State. He has become a fine guitarist and singer of the blues.

Roger in Baltimore (who actually lives in Virginia within walking distance of the entrance of the Potomac River into the Chesapeake Bay.)

A few years ago I recorded one of Robert McClosky's children's stories called Bert Dow, deep water man, and I gave it to Kiran.Kiran came to me and he said, "I want to thank you for making that CD for me. I like it so much I went and bought the book"! Now, I know I have made a difference in a child's life. Thanks, Little Buddy.

In the concerts you guys sounded fantastic, an opinion I hold even when the sound broke up and we could hardly make out the tune. No fear- you were fantastic.

Oh- Micca, thanks for doing 'Gladiator'. We were hoping you would and we sang right along.   Another notable song that came through clearly- along with those wonderful harmonies rising from the audience - was 'River'. Thanks, Joe O.

Many old friends not there that I missed, and new friends to be made. It is amazing the magic of this weekend never wears thin from year to year. I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy myself with limited voice to participate, but think I actually enjoyed it more because I wasn't so worried about not having a song for the workshops I attended.

Saturday night Annie and I wandered out of the Retreat Center. She was headed to bed down in her Subaru, having stayed late enough that a three hour drive home was imprudent, and I decided to head for bed myself - do the responsible thing, you know? But as I stood in the center of the camp music was wafting around me from the 4 directions. Had to follow it all....A journey that will leave me exhausted for the next week but well worth it.

It really was another wonderful weekend, and what unexpectedly splendid weather! I now have great memories of singers I've admired for years, and memories of some new ones I'm just getting to know.

It was a great delight to hear Kat Logan's new group Meteora; they obviously have been doing a lot of hard work together to be able to sound so good, and they are equally strong singers when they lead a song. I look forward to their first recording.

Things are settling down here in Richmond, Virginia. We've shifted over to the hotel where Judy's legislative conference is being held. I can finally sit down at a proper desk for my Netbook and use my mouse! I'm also going through the runny nose phase of a cold I picked up from an interesting singer at Getaway; I really enjoyed talking with him about his songwriting but he probably should have quarantined himself. Luckily the cold didn't get to my throat before Monday and at the pace it's going I should be fine again in a day or two. I have nothing to do here for much of this week but hang around the hotel, explore the neighborhood, take a foray to the Black Swain used bookshop, and plan my song set with Bob Zentz for Sunday and Monday evenings in and about Norfolk.

I'm not sure what capacity this Netbook has for editing photos from Getaway but I may try experimenting. Both Judy and I took hundreds of photos; at least 10% should be keepers.

We also enjoyed the late-night singing but there is a cost in loss of brain cells the next morning. Thanks to everyone, especially the organizers, who made this weekend so enjoyable.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble and JudyB

Many people make that mistake. The fact is, Portland Oregon was named for Portland Maine.

Two prospectors, or trappers, founded the place. One was from Boston and the other from Portland. They flipped a coin and the man from Portland won.

While I was at the Getaway, some woman came up and stuffed what I thought was a dollar bill in my pocket. I knew the woman, but now I can't remember which woman it was. I happened to look in my pocket last night, and found it was a ten-dollar bill she gave me.

Dear, kindly woman, would you please remind me who you are, and tell me why you gave me this generous gift?

Maybe she's just making up for the fact that Kendall's the guy who always gets all the attention at the Getaway, and the rest of us are all jealous....

Thanks for the history, Kendall! I love history. And finding holes in my knowledge, I think it's so interesting when that happens.
By the way, you and your wife were the ones who did the Drop of Nelson's Blood song, right? (I'm new here so still getting to know everyone, and it's a whirl in my head right now.) If so, I wanted to thank you both, because that was one of the weekend's highlights. So very powerful; and after having sung that song (well, the chorus) drunkenly in pubs to learn the story with your all's masterful telling was incredibly moving.

How is it that this weekend just gets better every year? It was so good to have Meteora join the crew - three of my favourite people and what a combination! Getting together with friends, some of whom I only see once a year, makes the Getaway even more special. I wish you would all move to Maine!

Thanks to all who took part in the Mummers Play, I love getting that all together. Good workshops, as usual, and plenty of music all weekend. The whole thing is worth the travelling and we are lucky enough not to have to get back to employment when we come home.

Here's to next year!

Pardon me for attempting sincerity -

My first Getaway, 2010, was simply the most exciting and fulfilling (non-marital) experience of my life. Last year was better. This year better again.

This is scary.

But I thank you.

I am just back at a computer for the first time after flying home yesterday.

The Getaway grows more magical every year, and it sinks its roots deeper into my soul. Kudos to its FSGW planners and realizers, and thanks so much for welcoming us weary travelers home each year.

I didn't take photos, but I brought home many vivid memories. The workshops and mini-concerts were fabulous as always, the evening concerts brilliant, and the all-night Peace sessions (all three of them) unforgettable -- though, after three nights of hardly any sleep, I am having trouble remembering much of anything.

Here are a few highlights I do seem to recall: Amos was in fine fettle at his mini-concert and as gallant as ever throughout the long weekend. Kendall and Jacqui's performances get more flawless each year and bring more tears. Janie sang quietly this year but was as compelling as ever. Genie remains irrepressible, Jeri poignant and sharp-witted, Joe wholesome and charming, CeltAddict and Mmario wonderful to hang with, Ferrara and Bill D (who hosted Micca and me on Thursday night) sweet and welcoming, Ranger1 strong and funny, Tinker outrageous and profound, RiGGy a great new contribution to the Getaway's Mudcatter contingent, Charley highly entertaining, Rapparee great fun....

Oh, and that Max fella? Totally rocks.

Cheers
Claire, who's falling asleep at the keyboard

I'm still walking on air and humming under my breath. I thought I'd share what I posted on facebook yesterday:

"Today is going to be a day of reflection after the intensity of The Getaway. I already know that attending The Getaway is a need and not a want. After not having been able to go for the last four years, it was like the first gentle rain after a drought. All day long yesterday as I was travelling home, I kept hearing bits and pieces of my friends' singing. Not a bad soundtrack for a journey."

Thanks for singing me home, my friends.

It was a real pleasure to met Riggy this year. I'd heard a lot about him from our old friend Barry Finn. He's a fine singer and I enjoyed chatting with him. I look forward to meeting him again when I'm out in San Francisco next year.

I always enjoy hearing Amos sing, and I even got to hear him lead "Poncho & Lefty." Amos says that now that he's retired he plans to do some serious recording. I hope he does. I want ALL his CDs.

It was great to see so many of the old Getawayers again - Micca, ClairBear, Dave R, Gutbucketeer, MMario, Judy and Dennis, Bob C. and Jennifer, Nancy, Dan (and if I'm omitting any names, it's just that there are quite a few of you) - plus some first-timers such as Charlie and Judy Ipcar.    I'm hoping to continue some of the music and good vibes this week in NC with Janie, Dani, Abby and NM visitors Art and Jenn.    Tinker thrilled and titillated us again with her stirring rendition of a song about a small appliance.   I woke CeltAddict up too early in the AM with my cell alarm (sorry, Janet), but she let me enjoy the skypes with KT anyway.

Things started off thrillingly at Gene and Sandra's Thursday afternoon and night, with great Cajun food and jamming till the wee hours.

The Peace Lodge was magical in the wee hours of the morning, especially Sat. and Sun. AM, with David Scheim wailing away on boogie woogie harp (as well as more mellow tunes), Lucy Goldberg's stirring voice, Donna Fletcher's amazing blues tunes, Max and Amos (when he wasn't resting his voice for his concert) rocking the place with all manner of song, Linda Goodman soothing us with her soft, mellow voice, and, especially the songs where the whole cabin joined in with a bunch of guitars, banjos, percussion (Dani's getting to be a pro on washboard), violas, and voices.    (I asked David if he'd ever put any of that rockin', wailin' harp on CD and he said he'd found that there's a magic that happens sometimes in a setting and group like that, which you can't really capture in a recording. I think he's right. And it really was magical.)

I really enjoyed the Jewish songs workshop, the songwriter circle, the maritime songs workshop and the Woody Guthrie workshop too - where structured music sessions are concerned. But as usual a lot of the magic was spontaneous and all over the grounds.

Concert highlights included Riggy, Micca (yes, I loved the Gladiator song - even though I was beginning to fear my 'puter would run out of recording space), the mummer's play with Max as the lovely Fatima, Lisa Null, Roger (formerly from Baltimore), Amos, Claire, Meteora, and the Chapel Hill group, and the guy (whose name slips me) who sang the Cassowary song.

I wish I could manage to come to 'Brigadoon' every year, but travel costs make that unlikely, so I'm really glad I was able to come at least one more time.

If you haven't gotten away to the Getaway yet, I strongly recommend doing what you need to, to make it happen.

I'm still on the road in the Old Virginia Lowlands, gearing up for my C. Fox Smith Concerts with Bob Zentz Sunday and Monday in and around Norfolk. I won't begin to seriously edit photos till we get back to Maine. Most likely by then Getaway will be a distant memory.

I always enjoy the Maritime Songs that Dave Diamond coordinates, this time ably assisted by Darriel Day. The Beans are also one of my favorite groups, for their musical arrangements as well as their choice of songs. Fred and Julia of Castlebay I'm of course familiar with from Maine but I love to see them introduced to a new group of people. The Sunday morning Gospel workshops were indeed inspiring, just the thing to begin a new and brighter day, after a hard day's night.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

It was a nice Getaway, and comforting to know that even if I did miss Meteroa and Kendall and Jacqui, these are good friends and I get the chance to hear and sing with them more than the average bear. (In case anybody's wondering, both Kat Logan and Will Brown are featured on the Singing through the Hard Times CD - it's such a joy to see them performing together with Jim.) And Meteora did a wonderful mini-concert.

I have mentioned George Rathbone's fantasy games for kids - also Carly brought art supplies and others brought puzzles - the kids really did have a wonderful time, and Kiran was very proud to have been asked to sing.

I particularly enjoyed hearing the Newlin/LaPrelles and the Bean family. That made the Singing Families workshop a special treat for us. I was pleasantly surprised to see so many folks at the Bird Songs workshop (and no chickens, not even one!). Without any familial bias, I think Nancy King's song was a highlight.

We'd have stayed later on Sunday, but alas, the schedule did not allow. Maybe next year.

Dan

Some highlights:

Phil Fox getting permission and setting up the bonfire, which was especially good for the singing on Saturday night.

Gene & Sandra throwing a great pre-Getaway party and for acknowledging belatedly the birthday I lost in the hospital during my cancer treatments.

Many old friends seen and new friends gained.

Favorable reactions shown to the song circles I helped co-host (with just the right number of attendees) and my own favorable reactions to the ones I was able to attend. Not a bad one in the bunch!

Roger Himmler & Donna Fletcher's blues singing workshop, which stood out for the imagination of the concept and the execution of the concept by the attendees.

Stumping the Guthrie experts with one they'd never heard.

Friends I had been urging to come for years coming and becoming hooked. And my memory and my pitch showed up, too!

Plenty of other good stuff as well. No bad times had and only one awkward one.

These occaisions keep getting better each year.

My highlights (besides the already mentioned Carrying Nelson home):

John the Revelator in the Peace Cabin (led by Jim Loney from Meteora). I think it was during this song that David Sheim broke into what really sounded like electric harp. Someone (probably Gene) yelled (jokingly) "You can't *do* that!"

Everything Lucy Goldberg sang. Her voice is transportive. I'm so glad to know it exists.

Donna and Roger's blues workshop: I loved hearing everybody's blues voices!

All the workshops I went to were stellar: Severn and Jesse's Strangers in a Strange Land (hearing a woman named Heather tell a poignant story of leaving Scotland and then singing My bonnie lies over the ocean was just so deeply moving);

Phil and Severn's songs of the 50s and 60s (what a great way to break through the barrier for shy singers!);

Roger and Phil's Roadhouse songs;

Jusy Cook's supernatural songs (Peter Cook's the Griesly bride still gives me shivers);

the Slow Jam led by Jim Bunch, Amy Davis, and Jon Newlin, where I learned it's *fun* to try to keep up with bluegrass songs (especially when, and maybe this is most of the time? they're two chords, D and G);

and of course all the wonderful ballads. As well as all the workshops I heard just pieces of; the maritime one comes to mind; I got to sing along with some of those songs while I was hovering over the auction items.

Bidding war with Max over the eight old songbooks, including songs of the Kiwanis, Lions, and Rotary Club.

Being brave enough (after a few hours) to sing a song I'd made up at the campfire (thanks to Meteora and David Ingerson for encouraging me).

Hearing Janet Stollnitz's lovely granddaughter sing a song with a lovely eerie melody she made up to words from the Hunger Game.

Making new friends!

Waking up to Wade in the water.

Hearing Gene admonishing someone "You can't go to bed! The sun hasn't risen yet!"

Donna backing me up in beautiful harmony so I could be brave and sing at the open mike.

Everybody's, especially Sandrolin's, Charlie's, and Lisa's amazing welcomeness and inclusiveness. I ended up feeling like I'd been coming for years, even though this was my first one! I can't wait till next year.

If I'm repeating myself, just chalk it up to giddiness. Wish I could sing and listen to singers for a living.

I want to pay special tribute to David Scheim and Ron Davies, both incredible musicians and performers who also have a special gift for playing for, (and in Ron's case, also singing with) and supporting others in a song circle. You use your knowledge, talent and skill to encourage, enable, empower and support each and all.

I know from conversations with others that I am not speaking only for myself when I say this is a rare gift you offer so freely.

Thank you.

I woke up on Tuesday with a major cold which when added to the nigh on sleepless nights left me in a fog the last few days.   Yesterday we discovered a nick in the break line that required immediate attention. Finally I think I'm processing what happened nigh on a week ago.

There is something nigh on magical that occurs Friday night when you walk in and make eye contact across the room for the first time. Time and travel weariness slip away. Hugs and smiles and connections which may have been put on hold for a year or more are instantly back in place. Brigadoon only appears every hundred years, but Getaway holds open the door once a year and beckons us to enter once again.

Kendall (and his infamous leather jacket) definitely rate the warmest of welcomes. I got myself some leather on leather hugs and cuddles to set the tone for my weekend. Thanks Jacqui for sharing an amazing man. Then it seemed as if conversation after conversation just picked up where it last left off ... you all know who you are.

Peace cabin music just keeps going and the cast of players seems to expand each year. I know I went to bed before the sun on Friday, but I have no memory of actually leaving the music. In fact Saturday flowed into Sunday as we stayed awake to greet the sun. omewhere in the wee hours I actually found my voice and sang several songs that were not BOB..... seems my voice is returning. There was a magical moment on the dock as Claire and I sang to the setting full moon and rising sun. We began in a silent dawn and as the last note drifted the birds of the sky joined in the song.... And then our Peace cabin pals tromped along singing Red Rubber ball ... head shaking giggles.

Lots of moments still to process. Watching Kirdon run and ramble with the other kids across the camp made me shake my head a couple of times, How could no time have passed when clearly time had marched on...

And Sunday night in my sleepless haze there was a post concert moment in the retreat center when several of us added our voices to Fred and Julia's singing a song about parted lovers and a carved wooden door. Twas one of those moments when the harmonies transported to a small and shining glow.

Oh and skyping with KT and Ebbie at random times and places over and over thanks so much Celticaddict for keeping us connected.

KT --- I laughed with my boss about not needing an extra day off enjoy my morning coffee on the shore.....

What Janie said about David and Ron. Always a pleasure! I still have a lovely spontaneous recording of the three of us playing "Da Slockit Light" in the meadow a few years back. Just listened to it the other day, in fact, and played it for Ebbie. Almost like being there.....sigh...

Yeah, Janie, and there were marshmallows, too! My computer's still messed up from my trying to shove them through to your campfire!

Tinker, that memory makes me smile. I admire your spunk! That coffee on the shore was pretty wonderful!

Kendall, thank you. I love to think of being there with you and Jacqui!

This conversation regarding leather at the Getaway just goes to show how remarkably we have evolved over the last couple of years.

Alright photos have been uploaded onto the FSGW Getaway at Yahoo Groups website. I can "beam- up" (sign anyone on) who would like to be a member. Go to Yahoo Groups.com then search for FSGWgetaway@yahoogroups.com   If you have trouble contact me slkoppel@yahoogroups.com

Your photos and posted comments are most welcome. Also we could use some help with names and any memories associated with particular songs.

To all:

My much, much better half Sandra (Sandrolin) now sleeps beautifully in the arms of Morpheus across the bed from me....she laboured mightilly, alone, to download & then upload quickly just a very few of her photos from the pre-getaway party & from the getaway...we're both still totally exhausted from the incredible music event that this year's Getaway was and even still is for us.
I take full responsibility for falling down on the job this week-end, MEA CULPA.... so let me now try to (help) straighten things out!

First, the correct subscribe-in address for the getaway site is:
FSGWgetaway-subscribe@yahoogroups.com (I hope)
Sandra accidentallly added a dash after the word "subscribe" in her earlier post here.

Further clarification:

The FSGWgetaway yahoogroups site was established a little more then a year ago beginning it's getaway coverage with the 2011 getaway. It IS NOT a "Folk Society of Greater Washington" sponsored site, although more then 90% of it's member subscribers ARE FSGW members, including several FSGW Committee and Board personell.

The site was set up as specifically dedicated to the "Getaways" and will be a perpetually on-going documentation of same.

You DO NOT need to be an FSGW member to be an FSGWgetaway site subscriber... non-member attendees and "wish I could" be an attendee subscribers are all encouraged to subscribe in.

Last years photo archive includes almost a thousand photos supplied and identified by many getaway attendees, including some professional photographers.

So here we go again.......

Please participate.......and oh, we could use some help, lots of help from a yahoogroups-wise person to help expand and link the site to many others....obviously moderator status.....send volunteer info to SAndra (the site owner)

I'll try to help improve the quality of Sandra's uploaded photos beginning on Tuesday, well at least I'll try....it's not as easy as it might seem to those without prior professional expertise.....

Gotta go now, falling over

Best to all

The music still echos in our souls....

I guess I'll confess to a certain amount of hesitation about the Yahoo Group. The last time I joined such a group, I had to end up leaving - I couldn't handle the tone of some of the conversations relating to FSGW politics, and at a certain point, posts of that nature were becoming a daily event. I understand that these posts were written with the best of intentions, but would submit that perhaps it wasn't quite the right medium.

In my work I deal with the advantages and disadvantages of e-mail as a method for communication a great deal. I have found that it is an excellent medium for sharing information, a pretty good medium for coordinating simple things, and a truly lousy medium for dealing with conflict. We miss so much when we have only the written word to go by, it's so hard to catch nuance, and it's so easy to just press "reply" and vent our feelings, that sometimes e-mail lists can end up looking more like the "letters to the editor" page in a deeply divided town than a conversation among friends with common interests.

I don't blame anyone for what happened last year; I often find that people don't intend their list posts in quite the way they end up getting heard. And it's true I didn't speak up at the time - largely because I didn't want to get caught up in the conflict. Instead, I quietly left the group.

I'm hoping that any Yahoo Group this year can be limited to talking about the Getaway, sharing memories and experiences, and I guess I'll wait for such assurances before joining.

I apologize for dealing with this on the Mudcat, but I'd like to be part of the photo sharing, and I just didn't feel I could join the group without raising that issue.

Respectfully,
Dan

But thank you to Rap for the bourbon. I haven't tried it. But if it gets any colder around here, I will sip some tonight and think of you.
Kendall's leather is hardly a new wardrobe accessory. He has been tempting the ladies for many years with his soft, warm self. I for one have been groped back - he lies when he says he doesn't. LOL
Like Tink, I don't need the leather to give the hug. We are all very lucky that Jacqui indulges us.
Did anyone record Kiran's Freight Train? I would dearly love to see and hear that.

Wanted to thank Janie for her kind words about my vocal and instrumental accompanying.    It was a true pleasure to sing an impromptu duet with her ( and truth, be told, with Flawn and Lucy and everybody else I can do it with also).

In a lot of ways, it's at least as satisfying to sing a harmony as to sing the melody. It was also great fun to put the low bass into any big vocal group, e.g. the concerts Saturday and Sunday, (and that got progressively easier as the weekend went on and I got progressively less sleep.)    My voice has already sunk--I understand that's a function of age (just fine for basses, not so wonderful for tenors).    But by Monday morning with not too awful much sleep (about 5 hours Thursday night, after a glorious pre-Getaway party--thanks to Sandrolin and Gene for hosting it---, 4 hours Friday night, 1 /12 hours Saturday night (actually 8:30AM to 10 Sunday), and none Sunday,)-- I was ready to sing the Rachmaninoff Vespers-- down in the Russian bass range.

And it's also great fun to put be part of the musical texture with the viola.   I sometimes wonder if I should do it on a given song--and sometimes don't do it, since I don't want to drown out any words and the instrument is pretty resonant. But I do like weaving a countermelody or harmony in with the singer's line. It's also to some extent dependent on the strength of the singer's voice. and the rest of the instrumental backup. I've been playing and singing with Lucy and David for years so I know Lucy's keening voice--, perfect for Appalachian, mining songs, Western songs, Kate Wolf, and so much more-- can cut through a pretty thick musical arrangement.   But other voices I'm not always sure about.   And I know, as a singer, I want every one of my words to be heard.

Interestingly enough, I find that in order to accompany, it's also absolutely crucial to know exactly where the beat is at any given time.   So, for instance i have to get quite close to the singer and guitar to hear where the beat is, and I don't even try to accompany a acappella singing-- and, after all, the singer wants no accompaniment.

And after all this I haven't even started talking about the Getaway itself yet--and there's so much to say about that spectacular weekend-- and Jan is calling.

Belated post, but it's taken a while to get back on the rails, here.

First, a big thank you to our hosts, the ever warm and incredibly generous souls who do the hard work of putting on the Getaway, facilitating all the bits and pieces, and encouraging all comers. Thank you for this touchstone of REAL life every year.

Thanks to the best roomies ever, Jeri and Tami. Everyone got what they needed, whether it was sleep or no sleep, and left with the right bras. You're the best.

It was great fun to meet 3 new Getawayers (though I believe they are FSGW folks):
-        Mia, instant friend and total delight, even though (or maybe BECAUSE) she threatened our Abby with a knife within 2 minutes of their meeting; Jeanne of the lovely smile and voice; and Mitch, who was bubbling over like a bottle of fine Champagne shook hard with the wonder and beauty of the Getaway. Yes, Mitch, it's all real, and it really does re-appear out of the mist again next year. Come back.
It's always dangerous calling people out, but I'm gonna do it anyway:

Linda Goodman, you are a delight to my soul every time you sing a song, strum a guitar, or straddle a washtub bass. Like a flower opening and facing the sun : )

To Riggy, Mudcatter newly met: gently, you did one of the wisest, most kind things I've ever seen, and I bow to you. PM me if you don't know what I'm talking about.

The pics of Max as princess just made me spit the last of the 'company' wine all over my pajamas. You're a good sport, and it was great to hear you play and sing.

Kendall's Spoken Word session was great. Judy Cook's Beeping Sleuty made my sides AND my brain hurt, all at once. Kendall and Jacqui, you are the best team ever: keep coming up with stories. Your voices together are spellbinding.

The campfire was glorious. Can we do that EVERY year, please?! Phil Fox is sweetie, wonderful fire host and another veritable jukebox of things fun to sing.

Kat Logan's workshop on Finding Your Voice broke something open: afterwards, I had to go away and think, walk, write, sing. I am a singer, and I WILL sing from my armpits if I have to. Thanks for the perspective : )

Amos sang and played more than I've ever heard. He was everywhere, all the time; clearly he has found the fountain of cloning. I think it might be at the end of that dock. He made me cry twice before noon, which is how I know that he is only part gentleman.

Janie pushed on through pain and frustration and sang AND danced. Can't keep a good woman down.

Roger, Lisa and Charlie, Joe, Bill and Rita, Severn, Jim, Ron, Tinker, Nancy…. See? Once you start, how do you stop? Seeing all of your sweet faces and singing with (some of) you, even once a year, is good medicine. Thank you.

Alla y'all who couldn't be there…. I want to give you hell, but I get it. We have our seasons, don't we? But know that you were dearly missed. Probably if we ALL made it in the same year, a great chunk of Earth would float away on the West River, all aboard.

Post script: Driving home with Abby, Amos and Micca was one of my favorite parts of the weekend. Among them, IS there a song unknown? I doubt it very much. And once the bawdy stuff began… well, who knew it was downhill all the way from Petersburg VA to the middle of NC?! It was ALL downhill from there.

As I told Dani this AM, I still haven't come all the way down off my Getaway high.

Some highlights for me were:
- Kendall falling for Julia Friday night
- Meeting Abby and Rap in person
- Kat Logan singing Red-wing Blackbird in the Birds workshop
- Hanging out with Max on the dock and just talking
- Seeing all the people I haven't had a chance to see in four years. I have missed you all so!
- Hugs, lots of hugs
- Singing softly in the retreat center with Fred, Julia, Tinker, and Micca
- Listening to young Nicole singing while we worked to get Saturday night's midnight snack ready
- Watching the little kids listening to someone telling them a story

Oh, heck, the whole thing is magic, I give up trying to itemize!

Tami, it was a joy to see you again. We never did find the opportunity for you to read to me the piece you had written. Might a phone call be in order?

Dan, could you or Gheeta be persuaded to share the lyrics to the
brain song ya'll did at the concert?

Finally semi-human again after getting some much needed rest over this past weekend. This recluse who works too much was blessed with the presence of 'Catter's the week before Getaway and the week after. Wouldn't change a thing, but boy did I wear my already worn self out.

All of it worth every frayed bit.

I left my camera at home this year. Looking forward to what Genie puts up when she is rested, now that she is home again. Riding back to NC with Genie was a treat, and her willingness to do a good bit of the driving due to my painful shoulder was much appreciated.

Delighted not just in the Getaway, which I missed last year for the first time since I first attended, but also with the pre and post Getaway gatherings with Amos, Bobert, Micca, Chance and Suzette, Dani, Genie and Abby, not to mention some local folks I saw at Dani's pre Getaway Sunday pot luck and jam (not to mention Dani, her lovely self!) that I see waaay to little of.

Which is all a long-winded way of saying that the magic that is the Getaway extends well beyond that 3 days that happen once a year. You amazing people who comprise the FSGW and especially those of you who volunteer considerable time and effort to the organization, are the catalyst for continually building community, relationships and connection well beyond this one weekend, and well beyond the DC area.

I am so grateful to all of you.

The Brainstem song is written by an animator named Tom Minton, from a cartoon called Pinky and the Brain, which is about lab rats. Here is the original version. Of course, I like the way Geeta sings it best.

THree hundred laughing folkies descended on the lawn
Play low! Play high! And so we did play!!
Down along the long West River where the moonlight meets the dawn
Running through the weekend
Of the High Getaway!

(A minor gallop fades out)////

Maybe it is long practice, but my soul has never been so opened up by a single event--or what more correctly must have been an inifnite series of events highly compressed--as it was this year.

Who knows what magic lurks in the hearts of men and women?

The only part that is hard is the withdrawal. It's worse than quitting smoking. A passing note, a flash of a smile, and it's all there in cascades down to your shoulders, with no way out but to let it wash on through. We are all swept up in the lingering tides of the High Getaway...

Joe, Joe, Joe:
Hmmm, or is it Max? :-)

Seriously though folks, Joe must be THE most understated, non self-agrandizing person lurking here! LOL

Joe just posted a link to the yahoogroups getaway photo section...

What Joe did NOT tell you, however, was that he very quietly (and I'm not exactly sure how he did it) posted 10 of HIS absolutely stunning and otherwise beautiful photos from the getaway on the site, but he added them in at the END of Sandra's photo album of 34 photos without a comment anywhere about it! (Certainly makes Sandra look good, alhough he did indentify them as his own within the album)

Joe, please more, and put them in your own album, I think you know how to do it my friend.... just stunning "portraits" they are!

BTW- self-serving comments by others notwithstanding, the yahoogroups getaway site is primarily dedicated to documenting the yearly getaways, but it's ALSO a generally "non-moderated" site for the use of all subscribers to post their upcoming gigs, local and regional folk oriented concerts of possible interest to getaway attendees, etc. FSGW related Politics is NOT verboten, and is, in fact, encouraged as appropiate... where else can such forums take place, certainly not on the official FSGW website...... only here on mudcat or on the absolutely non-FSGW affiliated yahoogroups getaway site could/can getaway attendees comment and compare notes without drawing the ire of corporate moderators... enough said, draw your own conclussions, but in any event PLEASE post and upload your wonderful photos ASAP!

Best

Gene-Peace

Thank you Leo - guess that's one I'll have to learn.

I do have a bit of negative feedback this year. At a couple of the workshops I went to the normal manners - wait until a song has finished before finding a seat and don't talk during a song - were ignored by a one or two people. Those people I had not seen in previous years and guess that this was their first Getaway so maybe they weren't aware of how to deal with coming late to a session. It is, however, rather disruptive and shows a lack of respect to others in the group. Not sure what can be done about it.

Leadfingers; point your browser to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FSGWgetaway/ and join the Group.

You do have to "join" the Yahoo Group to see the images. If you are so inclined you can join and unjoin the Group as often as you like if you are not inclined to get all of the emails which are associated with the Group.

However to avoid SPAM I do manually screen every membership request. So until I or one of the other moderators accept your request there will be a delay between your join requests and when you may actually view the pictures.

Regards
-- Eric

A few people asked me for a recording of "Calico Dress" and I have bashed one out. Among them was Phil Fox, kindred soul, separated at birth, but who is unlisted int he attendee list. Does anyone have an email addy for him?

Anyone else wanting this recording please ping me, here or by email or PM, so I don't forget. The waves are high and the current strong in the tides of High Getaway...

I will also do the other favorites, in due course: Kind of Love, Winter's Night, Skipper's Song, per requests received, so let me know if any of those are something you'd want an MP3 mailed to you.

Many thanks to everyone for the grand tides and currents!

There were only two detractors:

1. I was constantly afraid my stomach acid issues would interfere with fun. They only did to the point where I mostly consumed non-irritating stuff. Probably good.
2. It ended.
3. OK, so I thought of another one: some people were not there.

Note to the programming peeps: please get Meteora back next year.
All three of them were joys, both musically and personally. I doubt you'd hear any other opinions. Of course, you had hits with all the guests, but Meteora...

Glad everybody enjoyed Meteora! None of the other program people had heard of them, but they all said, "well, OK, if you think so..." I KNEW so! Whether we can get them back next year remains to be seen, but the suggestion has been duly noted.

Not only are Kat, Jim, and Will fabulous musicians and swell friends, they're also incredible helpers -- on Monday morning they were right in there scrubbing down the retreat center kitchen and lounge, which allowed us to finish our cleanup WAY faster than usual.

And their house concert was wonderful, as expected.

By the way, thanks to all of you for coming to the Getaway!

i'm not sure if it is my imagination or limited 8 yrs of attendence.. but i believe the Getaway has evolved into more and more *forgiving* interactive jammy (!) arenas. Could be in the water.

Yeah well... on that note of forgiveness and experimentation
It was through them waters that jim Bunch belly floated into an experimental singing mode. .... WHEW! ... Did others catch that surprise?... out of a corner of the room & I couldn't nail where that voice was coming from at first... there was "wash tub Jim" with his best kept secret- killer -novelty tunes skipping and galloping in our ears... ... Later Jim confided that he had never crooned that way or those songs beyond his shower stall.....

I am more grateful every year for the brief interlude of sanity (let's call it that, anyway, even though we all know that isn't quite what I mean) afforded by the FSGW Getaway in a year that otherwise spins entirely out of my control. Thank you Nancy and all the rest of the weekend organizers. I salute you. And thank you for the 100th time at least for making us weary Mudcatters so welcome.

To all my fellow revelers in the wonderful atmosphere of the Getaway, thank you for being there and letting me be there with you. It is a privilege to know you, to sing with you, and (not naming any names) to suffer through sleep deprivation with you (and thanks for letting me borrow your critical ears each fall to improve my weak songwriting skills).

Let's do it all again next year!

Jeri et al-

Yes, the photo links only seems to work for Facebook members. I have similar problems with several of the other photo links folks have posted. We all need to make decisions which social networks we want to belong to, and what privacy options we invoke when we do.

I'll poke around on Facebook some more and see if I can rediscover their "public link" for non-members, if it's still an option.

The link to the Meteora PIXS actually shows two sets of photos, one taken at the Peace Lodge and one taken at the Memorial Hall concert on Saturday.
