Had a lovely time last night at the First in Last Out session in whitby, been meaning to go for some time, York not having a Saturday night session (most other nights, not saturday!) Intimate and welcoming and well worth the drive out and put more faces to catter names, raggytash, anneN and captain crab to name three. Thanks to you all
Peter

T'was a good night indeed, always helped when we get visitors from foreign parts to add to the wonderful people we have there. The pity for me is that the White Hart Folk Club at Mickleby is also on a Saturday night, spoilt for choice.

What a great night on Saturday! 2 Black Sheep and a Stallion - well we shear(!) enjoyed the former, the Stallion was busy elsewhere (didn't ask- nightmare!)

Straight from the horse's mouth (the landlord, Wesley!).
Every evening, from Saturday 18th - 25th, there will be an open session led by 'Perish the Thought' (you know who they are!), with the exception of Wednesday 22nd.
Apparently there are many sessions of various types being held during the day - see programme, notice boards, flyers for further info. Evening sessions will kick off about 7:00 - 7:30 pm each night.
The ale and apple juice is real, and well priced.
Let's have a Folkin' good time!

Charliestu & friends

Hello Good Folk,
After a fantastic week in the FILO I regret to tell you that the place has closed once again. The Landlord/manager appears to have a done a bunk, fortunately, he also took the bloody 'big'TV with him as well - every cloud has a silver lining! So once again we are back to square one. Perhaps the next character in there will actually be a business person and provide more stability.

Until the next time 'keep it live and folk for pleasure!'

Until such times as the FILO emerges like a Phoenix from the ashes of the last disasterous manager you may like to consider the White Hart Folk Club which also runs on a Saturday night. I'm sure Stewart and Chris will endeavour to resurrect the FILO which has often given us great nights, but given the current bleak state of the licensing trade I wouldn't hold my breath.

Info about the White Hart can be found at:-

after a week of George Garside's great melodeon workshops the 'elderly Austrian' was going to have a first play out at Saturday's FILO .... ah well, the public's ears have been spared for the moment :)

Well something positive at least! The FILO is open again and the new landlord is amenable to the Saturday night session/singaround. So, we are up and running again! Come along and enjoy yourselves we would love to see you.

Chris

Can't a Folk night be started on one his / her quieter nights , so some money is going over the bar ?

Hi Betsy
Quieter nights are good for all, just a few down falls with this here in Whitby,We have lots of pubs that do folk nights so if you could afford it you could be out every night of the week,F.I.L.O as lots of followers that live out of town that come for long weekends plus us locals that live here,So as for the money going over the bar .. I think with this lovely off the beat back street pub its more profitable to have it on the Saturday.
Plus Stu & Chris who run the sessions work lots of evening's in the week for their work commitments.
                Mrs C.

Call me old fashioned, but the name of the game is to sing, play music and enjoy ourselves. If we can actually please some people happy and put some money over the bar at the same time, and get rid of the pseudo folk-politics, then we could be on a winner and all enjoy ourselves!
To mirror Commander Crabbe, the new landlord was falling over himself to contact us with a view to getting us folkies back and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves last Saturday, apart from a 'tasselated few'
As Mrs C pointed out we can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people, etc, etc. Saturday Rules OK!
Come and join us!

From an out of towner's perspective Saturday is better although it meant I was able to turn up once in the three years I have been intending to go. The musical landlord thing has been disruptive as momentum is lost but hey we wil be back when we can get.

Another lovely evening of songs and tunes last night and the new landlords are gradually re-decorating, there's something new every time I go in :)
