Guest, I am one of the people helping to promote this event.

I suppose it depends on how you define "trad" on any given day of the week. Beggar's Bridge are certainly a (very fine) band in the traditional style albeit their songs are original (though you wouldn't necessarily know this unless you were told). Paula Ryan plays a number of traditional Irish songs on occasion also, so yes, in my opinion there will be some "traditional stuff".

Hopefully this will be the first of many of these events and if the venture goes well we may well be able to bring in bigger and better acts from "out of town" as well as those from the region. We would envisage this will cover the whole folk/roots spectrum from traditional to contemporary and many things in between.

Beggar's Bridge sing original songs about local traditions and historical events that happened in the East Riding and beyond. In the same way as other artists such as Seth Lakeman have done. I think it's a great thing to do - after all, most traditional folk songs were once original songs about real events that happened at that time!

Dear Guest, if the concert is not to your tastes we can only apologise. However we are sure that those who do choose to attend, rather than anonymously criticise the event for no apparent reason, will have a great night out. None of the promotional material states that this is a "trad" music night, it is billed as "Folk & Roots" and that is what the audience will get.

The people behind this event (of which I am only a very tiny part) have worked hard to put this together and deserve our support, not petty sniping by those with nothing better to do.

And yes, I'd support the statement regarding Beggar's Bridge in particular - they are a great band and do a great job putting a fresh spin on a traditional style (and no, I'm not in the band!).

Hear, hear Nick. I'm getting sick to the back teeth of people like 'guest' who constantly snipe at new music and imply they're somehow on a higher plane than the rest of us because they think they know all about 'trad' music. As has been stated, what is 'trad' now was original at some point, and folk (in my view) is supposed to record the tales, legends and concerns of the people of the times. Are we supposed to write about things that concern us and then not sing about them for 100 years until they become history and somehow more venerable?

Stop sniping and sneering, get your finger out of your ear, and support local folk in Hull.

And yes, I am in the band. And I'm really looking forward to being involved.

If what is being presented is good non pop music why not just say that instead of latching on to what a lot of people feel is a recognisable format with or without the finger in the ear.

I did not say that what you are putting on was not any good as you seem to be implying with the music I am asking about.

As someone said on a current thread "just because it is acoustic doesn't make it folk".

I am off to Whitby in about 9 hours where I will be offline so will not be able to respond to any more vitriol.

The fact that you use the term "good non pop music" suggests that you haven't actually bothered to listen to the artists mentioned above.

We all have our own approaches to this kind of debate, I suppose; personally, I always make sure I've had a good listen to a performer before passing any opinions about them.

The clue really is in the title of the event: "Folk n Roots".

All of the artists appearing fall into the category or "Roots music".

The inclusion of the word "Folk" is not necessarily relevant to all of the artists appearing at the event, but it certainly is for Beggar's Bridge, who play songs which tell stories of people, places and events relevant to this part of the world. That's folk music. I accept that, while their music sounds just like traditional music and also fulfils that story telling criteria, the fact that it hasn't been handed down through generations from possibly unknown composers means it is is possible to argue that it isn't "traditional".

Of course, the event title doesn't even mention the word "Traditional", so there was actually no real need to ask the question.

You say you "stirred things up - intentionally", but I don't believe you; you simply saw someone promoting an event using the F-word and decided to wade in with no justification whatsoever, and made yourself look a pratt.

Even though we play traditonal music on traditional instruments from all around the world, we still cannot be traditional ! AHH

highland bagpipes, balalaika, greek bouzouki, flutes, fiddles, hulusi, shruti box, accordian and many more playing klezmer, greek, irish, scottish, french, chinese, israeli and more!

This event will be great, so come and enjoy the music :)

Hope it goes well. I'd be there but I have another folky do in Sheffield.

I've only seen some of these performers in sessions so far, but from what I've seen they're brilliant. I heard some of BB at the Hull do last weekend and I enjoyed their music. Sounded very much like 'Folk' to me.

Love most bagpipes whether they come in ones or twos. We've had pipers of all types in Hull over the last 40 years or so. I used to go to a session at the Hase about 10 years ago. Martin Bull and Sue were there, John O'Boyle and various others. Sue and John mostly played Sc lowland pipes. What sort do these youngsters play? I'd love to hear a quartet of Lowland, highland, Northumbrian and ullian, although the highland player would have to stand outside and play to give the others a chance.
Apart from Ged and the 2 mentioned and the youngsters there's Dickie. In the past there was Julie Rawe on ullian and Nick Scott made the occasional visit to play with Chris and Denny. I don't remember any Northumbrian pipers in the area, but we often had gigs from Kathryn Tickell, Colin Ross, Alistair Anderson and even Johnny Handle had a go.

@ Mally - it was a hospital appointment I'm afraid so I couldn't skip it!!

NOW, some good news and some bad news about the Hessle gig.

First the bad news. Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond our control there will now be no bar at the venue. This is a licencing issue and is something we can do nothing about - it is well and truly out of our hands.

Now, the good news! Despite this set back punters ARE permitted to bring their own alcohol, so never fear, you can still have beer :-)

There is a Co-op supermarket in Hessle Square (a few minutes walk) which is well-stocked with beer (including a small selection of bottled ales), cider, and wine etc... and of course soft drinks for the drivers among you.

Apologies for this minor setback, but think of the money you'll save...
